  • A meditation belt (sash, strap), commonly depicted in art, is a wide strap that is used to hold the torso and legs in specific postures over prolonged periods of meditation, yoga or Tantric practice. There are many different postures and techniques described while using the belt. In painting it is often red in color. The belt, or strap, can be used by men or women, lay or monastic practitioners and generally only recommended for long periods of practice or in extended solitary retreat. #MeditationBelt #Milarepa #Virupa #TangtongGyalpo #meditation #yoga

The famous Ugra Narasimha statue in Hampi is depicted with a meditation belt and I believe it dates to the 16th century. That's not super old of course, but still, combined with its location in Karnataka, it kinda feels unlikely that the idea of a gomthag migrated there from Tibet.
Edit: This Yoganarasimha with a belt is in the Guimet, and is apparently dated to the 12th/13th c.: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Narasimha_Mus%C3%A9e_Guimet_2697.jpg#mw-jump-to-license
