The only problem with this track is the volume of Channel 2 and Channel 3. They shouldn't be that loud really. Other than that the track is great.
They did an edit where they turned the coils down
On the Mega collection editions, they are even louder because of the emulation.

As someone who suffers from them, I hate how accurate this is.
I like how Channel 0 and Channel 1 swap places with each other mid-song.
i remember entering the options menu as a kid and the music was so initially repulsive it scared the living shit out of me, but i’ve grown to like it.
That bass is doing its thing, and then 3:19 comes in a blows your god damn head off! And i absolutely love it! That's how Sonic's music used to be! An explosion of awesome!

This is the same game that had Toxic Caves. I guess Billy, the intern did this track. Or it was a last minute thing.
All the music from Sonic Spinball is fantastic, it just needed work with the arrangement/instrumentation. Even with the GENS soundfont it could have sounded PERFECT with more work. The actual music is great imo.

You know having it all deconstructed and put together in sequence actually makes the coils hype, like a base drop but inverted.

It's a shame because objectively, the theme isn't bad at all when destructed like this, but it's just....so harsh on the ears.

@@InsideOutAnus This is actually true though. Howard Drossin made a mistake while mixing the song, so the Tesla Coils sound louder than they should. As a person who dislikes loud noises, they don't bother me as much.

this wasn't just bad arrangement, this is bad utilization of the sound channels. if you compare the bassline on this to the other sonic games, their delicious phat basslines use channel 1. it sounds much more natural and more like an actual instrument, and the bass on this is channel 0 and 4 together. it sounds much more like a machine replicating the sound of a bass instead, meanwhile those channels are instead utilized to add complementary backing instruments to the arrangement in the better scored sonic music. and the fucking tesla coils/taser/guitar being electrocuted... not only are they way too god damn loud and unnecessarily split between two channels (i assume to make it even harder to listen to), they're used as The main instrument of the melody. in any other sonic game, the main melody would be carried between a few of the channels, so the song sounds natural and like it's progressing instead of being a static loop of hearing violent electric sparks being jettisoned out of a wire
I don't think channels 0 and 4 are part of the problem. All the FM synth channels have the same capabilities. Some other Sonic games actually use channel 0 for bass. The problem is GEMS, the YM2612 soundchip used by Sonic Spinball, among other Genesis games. Most other Sonic games have their own special soundchip that doesn't sound like the console's being shoved through a woodchipper.
@@memelord1790 The real problem is not GEMS; GEMS is a program that runs music through the YM2612, just like SMPS, the sound engine used in most Japan-made Genesis games (including the mainline Sonic games). The only two Sonic games on the Genesis that used something other than the YM2612 were Sonic CD (using an extra sound chip in the Sega CD) and Knuckles' Chaotix (extra sample channel from the 32X). In fact, there really wasn't a problem; the problem is caused by emulation being too good.
The YM2612 had some distortion in the output due to it not actually mixing the sounds; it played one after the other in rapid succession. Due to that, certain sound artifacts happened, including virtually eliminating high frequencies...
Hey, y'know why the Tesla Coils sound loud? It's because they're shrill and noisy. On original hardware, they aren't; they're actually in perfect balance with the melody.

I'd recommend getting foobar2000 and an add-on that deconstructs VGM files into separate channels that you can turn on and off as you please. Carpathia808 made a video about it on their second channel a few years back.
