Great tips Jim and the cat comment was hilarious 😂
Thanks Sasha! They love to help me fertilize 😂
@@MidwestGardener lol 😂
Jim, those are all great gardening tips, and I've used most of them in the past. However, I haven't placed jars over plants at night to keep them safe from roly-poly bugs. I love the idea of cutting the bottom out of a basket and placing it over an in-ground planted petunia, which I've also never done. One other thing that I didn't know and found fascinating was that wasps eat cabbage worms, which is great news. If you stop to think about it, this makes perfect sense because wasps are drawn to the barbeque grill because they are searching for protein. I hope you and Mrs. Midwest Gardener have a great weekend! ~Margie🤗💐🐝🌱
Those wasps can have all the protein they want from cabbage worms in my garden....but they better stay away from my grill :) Hope you have a great weekend, Margie! They say we finally have some rain on the way here.
@@MidwestGardener YAY! I hope we also get some rain because it's horribly dry here.🌦☔
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Good stuff! I really appreciate the collar protection idea because it allows for earlier planting! Thank you!
Thanks Octavio! Glad that tip was helpful!
Good Afternoon Jim - These tips are awesome especially the ones dealing with pests. Sometimes I don't know if they are good bugs or bad bugs so pictures to go with the names help a lot. i grow exclusively in grow bags as I have no yard but my deck is a jungle in summer. I used your tarp method to recycle my old soil with new and it worked great. Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for all the tips!
Good afternoon, Sue! Glad that tarp method worked well for you too. Hope you have a great weekend! We finally have some rain on the way.

Hi Jim, I recently moved from Eastern Washington State to rural upstate NY. I'm in zone 5. I haven't used all of the tips and tricks you shared. Thank you for sharing, I love learning something new. Happy gardening, 2023
Hi Shelly! That must be challenging having to learn how to garden in a different state. We are just waiting for frosts and freezes to stop so we can get on with the summer stuff like tomatoes and peppers. Hope you have a great gardening season in your new location!
I'm in upstate NY also.
Thank you. Excellent.

It’s awesome finding another Midwest gardener!
I don't what you mean. It's always great to hear from other gardeners in the Midwest.
@@MidwestGardener indeed! It’s so different than the 7a area which seems like a large portion. Weeks matter so much when starting each season of gardening.
Wow you taught me so many things in a short time! Thank you!!
You're welcome, Janice! Glad I could help!
New sub , great information , stayed for the calming voice!
Thanks for the sub! I really appreciate it!
That basket of petunia is awesome! I'll copy your idea. Thank you !

Thanks Karen! You're welcome!
Great tips as always! ❤
Thanks!!
Beautiful video. To the point. Appreciate your work. Earned a new subscriber. Keep it up 👍🏻
Thank you very much! I appreciate that. I'll do my best.
Thank you for all of the tips! I really love the grape and soap tips. I never thought about the tomato soaking them to grow roots. I started companion planting this year to hopefully this will eliminate some of the pests this year. 🤞🏾Thanks again!
You're welcome, Michele! Glad you found some useful ones in there.
Great tips ♥️🏴
Thanks Pateicia!
These gardening tips are a game-changer! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great! Thanks
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for sll the tips! I'm starting to garden again after quite a few years and my garden area has to remain fallow for a year to reclaim it--I'll be "planting" plastic forks soon!
Good luck with your garden!
Curb discards, I pick up ice chests for pots, open drain plug for drainage, works great, I grow my herbs in them & they have a handle to move it with.
Thanks for the tip.
Great tips Jim. Good to review these tips every year.
Thanks Bob! I just thought of another one. Don't plant too early. It got down to 26 degrees here this morning. I hope it doesn't go lower.
We're not gardening here this year but the warm winter had everything blooming and leafing out and we got a hard freeze a month or so ago. Everything died back and it looks like a few of the plants and even trees might not have survived.
Hope you didn't lose too many plants. We just had a hard freeze here a few days ago too.
Good advice.
Thanks Carol!
Thanks for the video and tips
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
You are awesome love your knowledge depended on my mom but O. S . Growers are gone nice to see your video helping others...😊😊😊
Thanks for the kind words, Debbie! I really appreciate it!
Great video thank you sir
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great tips! I'm always rooting the tops of my seedling tomatoes that snap off. They're very brittle plants and prone to tangle with one another, but luckily they're also very adaptable. I'm planning on rooting suckers of my cherry tomatoes around the solstice, hopefully for good tomato production in September like you mentioned. Last year, my plants sort of fizzled out by the end of summer.
I like your plan. That's a great way to get some late tomatoes. Lots of tomato plants have a tendency to fizzle out toward the end of summer. Good luck with this season!
Your voice is super soothing
Thanks Jennifer!
Thankyou. Think I will wait until after the chives flower though. ❤
You're welcome, Sharon!
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Great video
Thanks Ken!
I use soapy water when I bring my peppers in for the winter. Works like a charm. Have you ever tried burying the stem of an eggplant? I have heard they do the same as tomatoes.
Good to know about the soapy water and overwintered plants. I haven't tried to bury the stem of an eggplant. I might give it a try sometimes if I think about it.
Just stay away from Dawn dish soap. It's toxic.
YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!!
Thank you very much! That is very kind of you.
@@MidwestGardener I absolutely mean it! I'm a gardener in Barbados and your presentation and the content are both flawless. I mean... after watching, I left feeling better about my garden and the world. It's like I have a mission. Thank you.
@@kerrybelgrave8594 Thanks Kerry! I really appreciate that! I hope your garden in Barbados does great for you!
These are great tips and ideas! I wish had known the plastic cups to stop cutworms! I lost some cauliflower transplants because of cutworms! Using this idea for sure!
Thanks a bunch! Glad I could help!
@@MidwestGardener You’re welcome.
I so much enjoy your videos and your mildly meditative voice. I’m chuckling.
Your ideas are so do-able!! I haven’t had many caterpillars on things….but when I find them…..I pick them off and put them in the open outdoor birdseed trays. Moments later…..caterpillars…Gone! And I shove any lost roaches over into the soapy water. Those are the few roaches who did not visit the ‘roach hotel’….you know. I will try out the sweet potato idea.
And yes…..for the great idea to freeze extra cilantro/basil, etc. I planted some of tomato suckers but….maybe they did not get enuf nutrition. I use Dr. Earth fertilizer for veggies…..but I have heard that I need to increase the middle number(phosphorus) for tomatoes. I’m learning. I’m subscribed since way back in time. Keep those videos coming.
Ahna. Atlanta/USA
Thank you very much for those kind words! I really do appreciate it! Also, thanks a bunch for staying with me. Good luck with the upcoming season!
Hi Jim! I’m new to your channel.
Great tips!
Your voice is very soothing.
Thanks for sharing!
Hi! Thanks for the kind words, and for watching!
@@MidwestGardener You bet.
Thank goodness fr plastic forks ordering now !
They do come in handy in the spring.
Tyfs!😁👏🏾👏🏾
You're welcome, Cynthia!
Hearing you really reminds me of my daddy!
Aw, that's nice.
😊❤ thanks
You're welcome, Patricia!
Great video, thank you for sharing.😂
You're welcome, Judy! Thanks for watching!
That was a big tomato , oh yea that sucker trick i did it and they are producing just as well as the main plant !!!
Well done on getting a sucker to produce fruit! Most folks don't even know you can do that. I think Giant Belgium produces consistently large tomatoes better than any type I've tried.
Cool.
Thanks Carol!
I don't think I know what a cut worm is. I definitely didn't know wasps feasted on caterpillar, worms. Great tips and information.
Thanks! You are lucky if you've never seen a cutworm. They will cut tomato seedlings right off at ground level. One day you have a plant, the next day it is lying on the ground dead.
California here, a lot of cutworms here. They are fat little (under an inch) dark in color , usually with grey and some purple as well. Glad you haven’t had a problem with them.
@Pat Sternburg
I get tons of worms or caterpillars from the white moth or butterfly. I fight them all growing season. I'm in Pennsylvania and we're starting to get something called a Spotted Lantern Fly too. And our neighborhood has a family of groundhogs. I think I have them handled this year.
Thank you! I didn't know about wasps and cabbage worms. I might grow peanuts again this year.
You're welcome, Rose! I've been thinking about growing peanuts again too. Not sure if I will find the time or room though.
Great video!!! Lots of great tips for new and established gardeners. Thanks for sharing.
Just to keep you updated, my one Bundaberg plant died and the other one is dying. I don't know why, no apparent insect or disease damage. They just shriveled up and died. 😢😢 They did produce a lot of delicious tomatoes. I have 2 plants starting to produce and some seeds sprouting. I'm going to try again.
Take care and have a wonderful week.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Thanks Shirley! That's very disappointing about the Bundaberg Rumball plants. At least you got to eat some first before they died. That is the way gardening goes sometimes though. Hope the rest of the season works out better for you!
@@MidwestGardener Thanks. I think it's just the heat, they are next to my fence and it gets quite hot there. I'm planting the next generation away from the fence. Maybe they will do better there.
Good luck! I hope they do better.
Great tips!!! Give us more! 😂
Thanks! I'm working on it, but it might take a week or two.
Absolutely not rushing you at all! Your just a wealth of knowledge and tend to agree with what you say! We all can get much more from sharing our experiences and learning the variable around growing. As I think I'm narrowing things down I actually feel like my knowledge is expanding. And it's more about adapting our skills depending on what variables were thrown and at what season and climate. Having more tricks in our pocket help us to learn quicker. By the next season I forget a lot!!!
@@gointothedogs2 Thanks for the kind words! That is one great thing about gardening....there is always more to learn. I learn things every year, and probably forget a few too :)
Love your simple but very useful tips.
Please tell me which end of a sweet potato will sprout slips. I don’t know which end should be dipped into a jar of water. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad you found them useful. Sometimes it can be hard to tell which end is which on a sweet potato. Usually it is the narrowest end that goes down.
Had a lot of my plants last year cut at steam, THINK it was pill bugs - gonna try the jar trick
If you think it was pill bugs, it's worth a try.
Thank you for the tips! Several I have not tried before. Can I use old grass hay bales in lieu of straw for planting sweet potatoes?
You're welcome! I assume that hay would be similar to straw, but I can't say for sure. Whether you use straw or hay, make sure it doesn't contain persistent herbicide in it.
Thx Sir
You're welcome!
I bake spaghetti squashes…..and freeze the squash strands(minus big seeds)…..for later spaghetti dishes. I bought a small extra freezer 4 years ago from Lowe’s to put extra prepared things into. Was the best $250.00 Ithat I ever spent!! I fall back on those various frozen/stored foods very very often.
Ahna Atlanta/Ga
I like the way you think. Producing food to use later, is one step in becoming self sufficient. Well done! I agree about the freezer. We have a chest freezer that we get lots of use out of.
Thanks the forks (or broken stick better)!
You're welcome! Glad I could help!
Use a garage sale blender to blend died bugs to put on plants to ward off or warn off other bugs.
I've never heard of that one. Thanks for sharing it.
