  • Ep. 141 FOUR VALENTINE'S DAY MOSAIC HEART MAGNETS + WORD BANNER FOR THE ST. MARK MOSAIC!
    0:25 I kick it off with the lettering for St. Mark. I try to pre-cut a small section and then fill it in. For this part I cut and go with the white background and only pre-cut the black edging and letters. I am using Laticrete 254 thinset as my adhesive.
    1:40 I give a closer look at how I shape the pieces to fit around a curved letter. Sometimes I have to grind the edges if it is a convex curve since the nippers give it a jiggy jaggy edge as it takes bites out of it. A concave curve is easier to cut cleanly if it is small. I continute to cut and shape the letters in black and fill around them with white glass.
    4:32 The thinset has skinned over and is no longer shiney, which indicates that it is time to remove any excess and start over with fresh thinset.
    6:14 Changing gears: I move to a quick Valentine's Day project for my kids! I love them so much!!! I found four magnetic heart substrates at Hobby Lobby that I can use. Because the magnet on the back is not super strong, I decide to keep them lightweight and NOT grout them. That means I should paint the substrates so the white doesn't show.
    7:20 I am making forest green, green, spring green and purple according to what my kids like. I paint all the substrates and start with the forest green since it dried first.
    8:50 I use E6000 for the feature bead which is larger and faceted beads for the edge. The rest of the pieces are adhered with Weldbond. All the adhesives I use are clear or dry clear, so the painted substrate will show.
    10:25 All done! I test them on the fridge and they stick! Yay! Just what my kids want and need, right?!? I think they came out great!
    11:13 I get back after the letters in St. Mark's banner. NOTE: Letters with straight parts like the M and K are much easier than curvy letters like the S and lower case a.
    12:30 I give a great tip for Apoxie Sculpt. In order to keep straight which Part A goes with which Part B, I use nail polish to mark it in multiple places so that no matter how I pick them up I can see which ones go together. Frankly, I think they should color code their lids.
    14:11 Back after the rest of these pesky letters! This time I wrap them up and then finish the swirls on the banner! YAY! Next week: the body of this lion!

    Julie we can see you have poured your heart out in the L'll hearts you made for your children 😍😍😍 I loved how you decided to paint their chosen colours to form a back drop for the tesserae to avoid grouting and thus keep it light - fantastic idea and they look so very lovely 💗

    I love the hearts!! Did you use the E6000 for the mirrored pieces or just weldbond? Painting the back ground was a good idea, I like the way they turned out and not having to grout them. It looks like you used different thickness white glass in the banner? Another great video! 💜💚

      @mazzonimosaics8222  Před rokem +1

      I used Weldbond on the mirrored pieces. The white glass is all the same thickness. It’s just slightly tipped in different directions!
