  • In a previous episode we discovered a problem with this particular Walkman and I think I discovered what the problem is... let's take a look.

    I was thinking it looked like a photosensor and then you came to the same conclusion a bit later in video.
    Isn't it just amazing how these things were built? On a modern MP3 player you can only see circuitry, nothing else...

    Nice video, friend! Never saw a dual capstan auto reverse walkman like that, that motor is a brushless stepper motor, i doubt this thing has any flutter

    I have a Sony Walkman WM-FX495 like that, but after I played the cassette player, it immediately redirected itself to side B and then stopped... do you know where the problem is?

    why didnt you show how to remove the darn thing. I got the same model and I need to replace the belt but the back plastic wont come off. There is litteraly nothing holding it but Its just stuck.

    When i hit play the head is not coming down. Motor whirs for a second and stops. Any ideas on how to repair?

      Have you replaced the belt? I don't know if this is a model that has 4 wires soldered to the PCB, in which case you'll have to keep soldering them back on and off to test. Anyway I would also check for continuity around the board, I would see if the solder pads for the wires are bridged or not and if its playing way too slow, adjust the potentiometer. If not it may need a full recapping.

    how the magnetic head is turned on when playback is pressed to the tape? there electromagnet is?

    • @databits

      +Maker 24 - it's operated by the mechanism

  • @AAAZ2A

    It's a dual capstan, both turning at the same time..
    If you have a good belt the wow/flutter should be very low. Very nice!
    Be careful with the knife-thingy, if it's magnetic the information/music on the tape might get damaged, but you probably know that ;)

      It's not dual capstan. It's just autoreverse thing. the capstans are turning in oposite directions and only one pinch roller is engaged at a time. in dual capstan mechanism both capstans turns in the same direction and both pinch rollers are engaged.

      Rafal Glazar I stand corrected (in utter defeat). No idea what I was thinking when I made that comment 5 months ago :)

    i had this Walkman too, and it cost like $60-70, but it's unavailable to play anymore, it can't spinning around, can you tell what's wrong with it?

      @apfanco Před 7 lety +1

      The belts in the machine have perished most likely.
