Everything about this performance of Clyde Waters is wonderful but the the wondrous thing is that upon each listening it just gets better and better.
If you haven't heard her album with Jefferson Hamer (this song is on it) go listen to it immediately. "Child Ballads"
Thank you for sharing this wonderful recording. Anais & Jefferson Hamer's album The Child Ballads, which contains this song, is an incredible collection of these very old pieces and I would recommend it to everyone.
Anais is such an exceptional performer, her poetry only rivals with her musicality and her so sweet voice ! The band is also not short of amazing talent to help her out
I agree about all you say about anais absolutely. But you do realise this is a traditional scottish ballad alternatively called "The Mother's Malison" filed under child, as ballad 216

When I first heard/played (along with) this it made me think of Genesis' haunting "Throwing It All Away" (which I played later).

First heard this song as "The Drowned Lovers" on the album Penguin Eggs by Nic Jones. For years that was my favorite rendition of the song. Now Anais Mitchell's version will be my favorite. I like this PHC recording better than the album version.
Much though I love Nic, I've got to agree - this is my first exposure to Anais Mitchell, but I feel like it won't be the last. This is lovely.

Why is there a Russian in the Clyde Waters, and why did he take the Willy from his horse?
Because thats where polaris is based on the holy loch. If we're being honest there's probably mean more than a few times there's been a Russian in the clyde waters but the UK goverment would never admit it. Which is why we want them the fck of oor land and waters for good and why scotland deserves and needs independence now.
