This piece is indeed Irish, if my sources are accurate, it's called the Red Admiral Butterfly and it's attributed to the great fiddler Tommy Potts. Of course my version of it is very heavily influenced by the various Mediterranean and Middle Eastern traditions which I have spent my entire life studying. I sincerely hope that the "purists" on all sides will forgive me for such licentious behavior

Music can touch those places of the inner soul that have yet to surface in many of us in todays world. Humanity, spirituality, musicality, all words, yet words all intertwined. Through music,it is unnecessary to have indepth knowledge of different cultures or belief structures.Yet acknowledging that music is the trigger for some inner peace from time to time. Open Mind usually equates to open heart and soul, something that many have lost in todays world.

Ross Daly calls this Irish and he comes from Ireland so I guess he knows what he is playing! Of course he is always influenced from greek, turkish, arabic and many other kinds of traditional music but there are no boundaries in the music of people that don't have boundaries in their minds (unlike many youtube users...)

Dear Mr. Daly. I don't know about the purists' opinion, but I am just amazed by the great blending of two musical traditions that I admire so much: authentic irish and eastern music! i hope there will be some more!

well, at least its not about "irish, greek, mediterrian" or any nationalist thing.its an expression of something that connects us all, crèation. And besides...there are always influences in music - its like be woven in - its like a borderless chit, chat of souls, individuals, people...Arabic music reminds me sometimes to spanish, spanish music to irish one and leads one if you follow to india...its waves...so just ride them, enjoy, be inspired, be connected, fade away...and love ;) :D

i like the pure irish musk-and like to play, but also i like every every kind of music. if you know about the roots from folkmusic and respect them you can mix everything
by the way: it is a very beatiful version!

......as the 6th is missing as in a lot of older irish scottish tunes which are sometimes simple pentatonic tunes, not that simple is negative just it is so,the tune is also known as 'Bob and Joan ' and the tune was used by Thomas Moore for his song ''fill the bumper fair'

Since the end of the last ice age the Celts have stretchedl along a lot of the West coast of Europe. Perhaps this tune calls upon some deep folk memory? Anyway I thought it a wonderful and moving work. Thank you.

hlo Ross , just to muck in on the whole "butterfly" thing, yes the tune is known in ireland ,but that doesn't mean it's irish ,it could well be scottish or english, and was played long before Tommy Potts was ever born, though he was recorded playing it in his perculiar way,the tune appears in Ceol Rinnce nA hEireann vol1 tune 63,on your recording around 10:52 you slip into the first part of the kid on the mountainthen slip back to the butterfly up to Gminor though its not strictly a full minor..
