Join Martine Altieri, PA-C from Boca Raton, Florida who practices in cardiology. She recently started an obesity clinic within her medical practice. Martine has been a PA for twelve years and has experience in cardiology, primary care and hospital medicine.
Obesity has long been recognized as an epidemic in the US. The physiology of weight loss undeniably involves a complex interplay between genetics, environment, behavior and neuroendocrine physiology. Many experts today, like Martine, recognize obesity as a disease, though this theory is not accepted by all. The lack of clear and specific diagnostic criteria, robust double-blinded randomized studies, and the concern that classifying obesity as a disease may make patients less willing to implement lifestyle behavioral changes and rely solely on medications for life-long management.
Martine will discuss the physiology of adipose tissue inflammation and dysfunction, identify adiposity-related diseases, help you understand the peripheral and central signals controlling energy intake, discuss the role of gut hormones, particularly role of GLP1, and she will share with you why she advocates the use of GLP-agonists in her practice.
