Awesome prayer that touches the innermost part of your soul. In studying Judaism, I've come to learn that the Shema prayer should be recited 2xs a day...morning and at bedtime. Shalom.

I am not Jewish but I say the Shema in the mornings. I learned it in Jewish culture and Torah studies I took. I loved it. It open my eyes to a dimension I did not know. It is a commandment for the Jewish nation to say the Shema, if I remember correctly. Bless the Jewish nation 🇮🇱.

So in our modern vocabulary is " hear and obey " or "observe" best captures the meaning of the word Shema . " OBEY , O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord " Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and with all your strength.

Not quite obey. In modern Hebrew, it simply means "listen", but in ancient times in definitely did not mean obey if you look at the context of other holy texts and thus it is likely, as you said, closer to "observe".

in English we say listen to me when we have something important to say or in text the use of caps LISTEN.
And in the context of prayer one listens with reverence. The source of the words is at that point more important than the message. I like what the previous blogger said 4 years ago, Shema is a call to action as we understand the differences between a call to action from a boss or a loved one.

i heard a funny story from a group of women who liked going to Escape Rooms. People pay money to collectively solve riddles in order to get out of a room the clues are in the room it is not primarily a physical challenge. As a Christian who believes in the gospel of jesus and that they are one. The Shema gives my heart joy I feel the spirit moving slowly around as soon as I wanted to do it. The Torah demands that the Shema is said twice daily, not three times. When you rise up and when you lie down. You can cut one out. Ignore your parents and pray however you choose.
