So glad they’re actively showing appreciations to the doubles. They were just as important as the main cast for this production yet nobody would even know who they are if it wasn’t for this video.
David interviewed his double/stand-in way back in the original DT Diaries... I was wondering while watching the episode if they would have the same guy... but this guy looks way too young haha!
I like how they got George's hair and costume to match David's, but Helen just wears her own clothes
There are two kinds of stand-ins on set. You have ones that will sometimes be used for an over-the-shoulder shot, or a fuzzy in the foreground shot, when you want both on screen at the same time, and it looks better than CGI. Other times you have stand-ins who literally are never filmed and are used for nothing other than blocking and marking. Odds are George was the former and Helen was only used for the latter. (He did mention something about Helen being "one of" the stand-ins for Catherine, I believe.)
@@thesargonas You can see Catherine's on-screen double in the associated episode of Doctor Who Unleashed, who is of course costumed as her.
Haha! Hi there Dan, good point. Normally as a stand in you wouldn't need the costume as you're there to facilitate the crew, positions etc but sometimes you're drafted in as a double which is super cool because you get to be in the scenes when David or Catherine aren't needed or doing far more important scenes. The scenes doubles will normally do are known as 'pick up' which only involves legs, arms etc. I think my feet and hands had a few starring roles throughout the episodes 😄 the highlights were definitely when us doubles got to act alongside them both. Helen that day was doing the stand in for Catherine where as on that day I needed to be in a scene. Hope this clarifies it up 😄
Worked as a stand-in once, plucked from the extra pool as my hat size & height were right for an actor. Got up close to the work of an Academy Award winning cinematographer, what a total thrill. Met one of my favorite actors in passing as well, Martin Landau. We both admired his briefcase. Had no idea what else to talk about. Lol, pretty much pure fun. Extra work highly recommended if you have the chance. Mostly waiting around, but fun to dress up & see the back end of filming.
It's great to see a behind-the-scenes video from someone who doesn't appear as their own character on the production! A great insight in to what goes in to making an episode. Thank you, George and team!
Anyone know how they move the tardis around so easily in real life? Is it just a cardboard cut out
@@rampz975 it's composed of pannels, they'll just take it apart and move it over most likely
@@rampz975 It is a series of flat panels that are clipped together on site for filming.
Oh my #timelord thank you for such a supportive response. I hope this video among others on #doctorwhounleashed shows just how talented and skilled everyone is on set and in post plus the sheer amount prep that goes into every second of filming. Doctor ain't wiping this memory!

This reminds me of the video diaries DT kept during his first run (they were included in the DVD extras). They were super interesting to watch. His content concentrated heavily on the crew, sometimes he had to coax them to be in front of the camera😂. Loved this BTS video, keep them coming. So fun to see all the people that make these shows possible.

The plastic organizer filled with different tea varieties is so British haha. I wish we had something like that at my office!
Haha yes! My office in london has a whole tray organiser of about 10 different types of tea by the hot water point.
This is awesome! As a VFX student, that information on the mirror ball was extremely helpful, and i love seeing how everything looks BTS!

Wow this is an unexpected eyeopener. First time seeing a sort of tour of the set and the process. Thank you for all your hardwork, without you stunt doubles, the sound guys and the vfx, none of this show can happen. Glad to see all of the people who make it, appreciate all the hardwork prepping and making sure everything is in continuity

As a film maker, I know exactly how everything works. I know who does what in each department. Seeing Doctor Who’s behind the scene brings a smile to my face every time.
I love that he's showing the behind the scenes people too. The sound people, VFX, etc

Having been a stand in myself on a movie this was interesting to watch, nice to see stand ins being highlighted! It’s a role that often goes under appreciated.

I freaking love this episode, it's an amazing goofy, camp-horror story. Even though the behind-the-scenes & media press for this episode makes it pretty obvious that they were intending this to be taken super seriously as "edgy Doctor Who", and that the "goofy camp vibes" were unintentional, the end result still works a treat. Legitimately works just on it's own as a really good camp-horror short film

I feel like the stunt doubles need some credit too for making the action sequences for much of the show. I’m also curious about how many different TARDISes there are for filming different events. Of course there is just the standing TARDIS, but then there is like the flying TARDIS, the gliding TARDIS, etc. like there is multiple Deloreans for Back To The Future.

Had no idea they were doing so much green screen like Lucasfilm. I just watched that episode and I certainly knew some of it was composited but now I think the whole episode was.
Watch the Unleashed. Stuff outside of the big corridor was all a set, its just that huge room was CG

The problem for being a stunt double is that you have to be physically and genetically compatible. This guy looks a lot like David in terms of body shape and height. If you have lost lot of weight already and want to be David’s stunt double, you gotta see if your head isn’t too wide or too narrow…
That gives me an idea.. I could be a stand in for William Hartnell lol

A stand in. Every time you are looking over a Doctor's shoulder in the episode, you are behind a stand in. Also, David didn't run on all fours...
In the other behind the scene's one there were 2 doubles of the Doctor and Donna! Not sure why they needed 2 spares?

@@ej3016 hmm maybe but they were all together in one location, 3 Donnas, 3 Doctors all dressed appropriately. I too was intrigued but alas it was never mentioned in Unleashed as to why there were duplicates of duplicates - I wish there was more detail and less of the presenter being a boom operator and camera assistant on work experience tbh.

In this situation Tardis being a Time Machine saw that in the nearest future the bomb would detonate and the environment would no longer be hostile, so it could safely come back
He says "a time machine", referring to that specific function of the tardis

I do hope you all start using the technology seen in the Mandalorian. Since it gives better visuals since blue yonder aside being a simple one felt a bit lower on the budget due to the green screen at times being obvious. But i assume thats gonna change eventually.

@@iz723 Stand-ins allow the production crew to set up everything a shot needs to be, without putting any undue pressure or wear and tear on the performer. His presence there is essential on bigger productions, when you don't have the time to flaff around as much as in indies or lower scale productions.
His job is being the accessibility and proper preparation for a show to be as good as it needs to.
I, for one, find brilliant that they even account for how David's hair is going to act when the cameras roll.
