  • A quick decision to spend a few minutes at Cock Lane turns into an epic two and a half hours filming the mayhem surrounding Werrington Junction after a freight train failed at New England blocking all lines except for the Down Slow. The story of how my afternoon unfolded is included in the video or it can be read in the text below.
On a scorching hot day I was sitting at home keeping cool whilst talking to my good friend Trackside ECML.
We were tracking the movement of a class 37 taking coaching stock from Castle Donington to Great Yarmouth which had been diverted via Grantham due to a points failure on the booked Midland route at Melton Mowbray. Arriving at Grantham it was shortly followed by a pair of class 43's on a test train.
After much debate I was persuaded to go out in the heat of the day for just a few minutes to video both, but I was a bit sceptical if I could make it to Cock Lane in time.
What happened next was unreal and turned out to be the most intense number of trains seen in a two and a half hour spell before I wilted and needed to go home for some shade and a cool drink!
Arriving at Cock Lane about 1:00pm I was confronted by stationary trains, an Azuma on the Up Fast, a freight on the Up Stamford and a freight waiting to come out of the dive under. It transpired that a freight train entering New England yard from the Up Stamford had failed on the ladder crossing blocking all lines except the Down Stamford/Down Slow ECML. East Coast northbound trains were being routed on the Down Slow to Helpston Junction but nothing moved southbound for the next hour and a half.
Then it all kicked off, the obstruction was cleared and each train slowly moved up to Cock Lane block by block.
It was probably not the best place to be videoing, choking on diesel fumes and high pitched 66's singing away under my feet, but that's the price you pay for getting such a good scoop!
I did eventually get the 43's and the 37 whose driver must have thought they were unluckiest person at work today.
