Rick James voice was incredible. They don’t make music like this anymore
INCREDIBLE! The don't make voices that powerful anymore.
He sings like an Opera singer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No!!!! They Don't
That's because people are afraid to fall in love.
Michael Turman people are Afraid to master their Craft and love themselves who cares if you sound ugly , you’re more than likely Trying to sing like someone else when you’re singing , try actually listening to how your voice work and see how dope you are at it 😎 but sadly as the years go on our Youth are becoming Drained , that’s why it’s so different because our music aren’t receiving vibes like this or ENERGY like this , so that’s why you just gotta keep coming back to Classics , I swear it charges up yo Spirit

Yea you're right, it was amazing how they were able to make it work but then again it is Rick James and Smokey Robinson, 2 geniuses and extremely talented writers as well as artists.
Rick was gonna do it with Clarence Carter; but he wanted to fly the plane and Rick said next time when the weather is better.....

Rick James was a bad ass. Plain and simple
Yes the hell he was
Smokey too
Smokey too
Hell Yeah
Rick James is remembered for several notorious things I wish he was remembered for his voice on this song.
This joint has to be top 10 all time ballads..
He killed this!!
Laid it out !!
His voice does get lost in all the things he's done. What I didn't know is he had a acting role in the movie Life with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence. I've seen that movie several times and didn't even recognize him. Just type Rick James in Life to check it out for yourself.
He's known for that also. He was a super Producer for Motown.
Brilliant collaboration, still a classic in 2024🎉
Always will be…classic
Facts!
These vocals, beat and the background singers are amazing...a classic
Please put Rick in the Rock and Roll HOF , He was a great true talent, He did Teena Marie, Gave Eddie Murphy a hit (my girl likes to party all the time) , Brought back the Temptations (standing on the top) , Had the Mary Jane Girls (in my house) Did this joint with Smokey, and gave MC Hammer (you cant touch this), Gave an ode to Patty Labelle (Spacey Love) He had a slew of hits, a true genius, All the great musicians have demons, ALL of them, Rick James was one of the all time great geniuses, if you don't get it , your missing out.
RICK AIN'T IN?!?
Truth!
And the bassline for thriller practically
RICK NEED PPL TO PUSH FOR THIS TO BE IN THE ROCK OF HALL OF FAME
Wait you mean to tell me he’s not in it already? You’re joking right??
There have been many great duets recorded throughout history. This is one of the very greatest. These two are legends.
Today's music will never top this Golden Era
@Xavier Gonzalez Amen to that

Rick James has been reduced to a comedian. He is and will always be an award winning singing, acting, producer. There was a time everything he touched turned to gold.

You Betta say that
I remember when this song came out in the fall of 1983! I was a freshman in high school! That song was in heavy rotation all over urban radio stations!!
Then the video came out! Rick James and Smokey Robinson were so Cool!!
A very talented Musician, Composer, Arranger, and Producer!!
Motown was still pushing out Rick James projects!! Unfortunately after an argument in 1982 according to his former manager Kerry Gordy, with then Motown President Jay Lasker, Motown stopped promoting Rick James's music less and less!! His last successful project was this album "Cold Blooded." "Ebony Eyes" was on that album.
Back then Rick James was clean and clear! If he was dabbling in drugs, it surely didn't show in the quality of the music, he was making! Smokey Robinson's melodic tenor voice was smooth as silk!! A perfect combination!!
No matter what he did when he was alive...Rick James went down as a musical genius and innovator!! Rest In Peace, James Ambrose Johnson Jr. (February 1, 1948 - August 6, 2004)

In 2002 I was doing security at a Rick James concert. He made a point to talk to all of the staff afterwards to thank us for doing our jobs so well. He had a large entourage of family traveling with him. I know he was older; but he was such a class act & nothing like what the media portrayed.
He had done calmed down a lot...
The media tends to prefabricate things of how a person really is.My take on Rick James is he's a realist and not pretentious. He was always one to say what comes to mind and played by his own rules, yeah alot was self destructive but at the same time he wasn't trying to be no ones puppet.
I definitely believe that.

Rick James' voice was so powerful
Showed tf out on this one!
These two complimented each other so well on this track. Smokey had that soft, crooning, "almost begging" sound which adds that mellowness to the song that soothes you. Then Rick came in with that power...not enough to take over the song or take it out it's vibe, but just enough to make you feel just how much he was in love with that woman!!!
The writing, the vibe of it, the voices, the music, the hook, the background crooning.....this could very well be the most "perfect song" I've ever heard.
Yeah bra. The contrast of the two styles is awesome. Beautiful song in any era. Timeless...
