Me: "I should put together a music playlist filled with lots of variety."
*fills it all with Vulfpeck*
I’m exactly in the same situation as you. Watch Stratton’s holy trinities and listen to all that music. That’s my advice
Vulfpeck is variety! They span so many genres and styles. Hell they even change singers constantly!
...and King Gizzard !
Same
That is literally me, I have a Spotify playlist of songs I like to play on bass and it's almost all Vulfpeck. A few Tom Misch songs, and one Stevie Higher Ground - but mostly Vulfpeck.
This song was playing in Kohl's today, I told my girlfriend that it was Vulfpeck with Joey Dosik on vocals, she said stop being a know it all.
You are living my life... except you're about 20 years behind.
When you catch up, it'll be your wife, and you'll be in Kohl's shopping with a scowling teenager or two as well, who will be all too willing to let you know that nobody cares about Vulfpeck or any of the other random crap you keep mentioning day in and day out. They will convey this via their five-syllable mantra: "Nobody cares, Dad".
Hang in there my friend. Hang in there.
??????
aTallGuyNH are you okay bro?
@@atallguynh LMAO, in my case it's "Nobody cares Mum" except that the kids put me on to Vulfpeck not the other way around this time :)
Dump her. That's not a healthy response to pointing out the name of a song.
Antwaun Stanley on backing vocals.
_Backing_ vocals!
I agree, more antwaun in my funk please
That's like the time Michael Jackson did the backing vocals for Stevie Wonder on All I Do
chillz
@@patxmcq why ruin a great song by mentioning Michael Jackson?
@@onesong2001 Kind of ironic thing to be trying to diss seeing as David T. Walker played on a bunch of Jackson 5 tracks
Just hit me, James Gadson and David T Walker where making great music in studio before any of these other guys on this track were even born. Still at it today and sounding great.
Music is awesome
Music for the soul is what the Dr ordered. Mahalo 🎉
David T. is awesome! But who is this band? They are great--tight, and dynamic. The towel on the snare helps create the 'fatback' snare. More drummers should use this. (I never had heard of James Gadson, he's a master groove player).
@@glen7695I know he played with Bill withers
dream come true
Genius accurate
Lmao the actual Genius account waddup
yes they do
#fuck genius
😄 That's the David T. Walker touch, yes.
How is this song so open, so honest, so funky, so soulful, so warm, so crisp, so conversational... so perfect?
Not often a song connects with me like this. Thanks for the tunes boys, a fan forever.
Forever and ever!!!!
Well said! It's a hurricane of sonic emotion.
Thanks for summarizing it for us. Completely agree 1000%
brilliant mixing is probably 50% of that, the rest is great songwriting
It shall be with me forever ...❤️❤️❤️ BILL
The loudness wars are over, the answer is clear, we've been unified under one flag: VULF COMPRESSOR
Harry Brundage Yes!! Finally!!!
The day it comes to Windows I. Would agree aha
or get an sp 555 or 303 for that vinyl sim
Shit it came out !
Goodhertz yo
James Gadson roccking the classic weekend dad look, with the unbuttoned shirt, and the giant-ass-phone-that-my-son-got-for-me on the front shirt pocker
For serious about that phone. I was thinking: Is that a Metronome? James Gadson don't need no stinkin' Metronome!
What an absolute master. Bow down.
And Mr Gadson can rock any style he wants...LEGEND
YEAH WOODY YOU SIT IN THAT CORNER AND QUIETLY SLAY
That's all he knows
Can’t tell a dolphin not to swim
Sitting so well in the mix he's on the other side of the room
Peak Woody
I don't know what a Woody only album would sound like I just know whoever is on the cowbell is gonna kill.
This is like having Whitney and Beyonce as your backup singers.
Lol yep!
...and James Jamerson as your bass player.
And when ur lead singer is also John Coltrane
And David T Walker as your guitarist. wait
What?! Yoncy and Whitey Crackhead have got nothing on this band, this band actually has talent and can write more than five repeating words.
that theo/antwaun/joey sound can't be real
It is pretty unbedievable
@@dansaunders1655 I want to take the time to appreciate you for this. It took me a sec. Love your work.
@@dansaunders1655 lol why does he pronounce it like that? :D
great performance
THEY'RE ON ANOTHER LEVEL
This is the closest thing we have to a modern Motown
Vulfpeck is one of the things that makes me keep believing the future is bright
i heard each vinyl is sent thru space in a new direction.. & i sleep well at night (used to be terrified of angry aliens)
Ok. Well good for you. I feel there's nothing new here whatsoever. Future is a very heavy word. Actually, i would argue that this is a nod to the past by fans of the old days. Sounds good though.
@Adam Hobson tried listening to it while walking though a rainy day....instant & permanent sunshine insida me 😎
David Hawkins I remember the sunny winter afternoon you introduced me to this incredible band of groovers
@Adam Hobson i agree. They play forv who? Earn $$ how? Have family, children , wife, ??? Misterio, sorry my rusty english. Brasil, do u hnow?
James Gadson on your song. Life forever fulfilled
I feel I’m witnessing the birth of a modern day Motown.
I’m stoked for the future of music.
im thinking of writing a research piece for my media history class, can i quote this?
chio uruakpa of course!
It's more of a stax and Philly sound compared to Motown.
I would like to have gamble and huff produce these guys for an album
John Disbro or Gabe Roth
DT Walker is just incredible. He floats above the rest of the arrangement but still perfectly fits in.
That's a lovely way to put it, and exactly correct.
Concrete in the kick drum because this groove ain't running nowhere.
ticfortea Holy crap, you meant it literally!
They got a concrete brick and pillow covering it? Damn, creativity right there. I'm gonna have to try that
bruce sweiden (im spelling that wrong)
did that for the recording for Billie jean
ticfortea is that what it's for? Catching those lower frequencies and deaden the sound?
Best comment ever... and extremely appropriate. James Gadson kills it
Every 3,407 years a team of musicians assemble and open a sonic gateway to Nirvana in order to remind humans that hope and love exist as forces in the universe. This time, lucky for us mere mortals, someone was rolling tape and the phenomenon was captured on film.
Any idea what made you choose that number sequence?
@@desktorp I'm guessing it has smthg to do with the long-count calendar..
ughh david t walker with the tastiest licks
i love james gadson's bigass phone in his front pocket
louie popping up on all my fav stuff! big fan of yours!
and joe dart with the at-st neck 2:20
He should really put it in his Back Pocket.
ughh. Indeed.
I like to think that if Marvin Gaye was still alive Vulfpeck would collab with him
They're both irrelevant nobody cares

ENGAGING WITH MINIMALISM
I spent ages watching the camera movements and wondering how it's all so stable and sorta...omni-present. It's cos it's a drone camera...indoors...which is fucking rad. So that's what Jack's doing - Jack's controlling the drone which is filming it all!
Consider this myth 'busted'.
PixelPigu Wouldn't a drone by incredibly noisy? Would be heard all over the recording?
I don't care what anyone says. This IS the best recording of Running Away.
You maybe cool but you'll never be cool as joe Dart strumming on the bass with his legs crossed cool.
Dylan Davidson plucking*
That's for damn sure, haha.
Dylan Davidson may be *
That dudes fingers are like a spider in a cement mixer
Cooler than cool
Gadson's drumming and hairpiece are still top notch. That's comforting.
Joey played that song opening for the Vulf in Amsterdam. There were no survivors.
@moisoi fuck me too and now I'm stalking Vulf tour dates
"Humidity in the room was insane"
i don't know what's best about Vulfpeck, their music by itself or the fact that I've learned more about music/been introduced to more great musicians through their collabs and Prof. Jack than any other band, all in the space of about 4 months
EGG, xactly!
Cellist looks like he just got off a scaffold in a New Yorker cartoon
If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. If Antwaun Stanley and Theo Katzman are your backup singers, you are something special.
J A M E S !
Joey Dosik Congrats on being awesome.
Congrats brotha! Glad this song is finally going to get the attention it deserves.
Celticsfan969 Seriously... this song is brilliant!
4:05 - Gadson's hat + swingin 16ths = white boy hips dance
Also, 1:10, has anyone ever wanted the and of 4 as Jack Stratton?
Sigmund Freud on the guitar
😂😂😂😂😂
lmfao
I’m dead😆
@@kennyc8647 So is Freud
@@Raittarian 😂
I love the shot where it pans the whole band and then Woody is just there in the corner.
Such a woody place to be.
The ultimate "thinking about her" song ...
that sax coming in at the end was H O T
One of my favorite Vulfpeck pieces, can't count how many times I've replayed it. Mr. Walker and Mr Gadson were 76 and 78 years young when this was made. Amazing.
Cello on a yoga ball, concrete in a bass drum, apparating sax player... after all these volumes, who knew it could STILL get funkier???
James Gadson and David T. Walker with Vulfpeck !!! The Motown spirit is definitely here ! I'm so happy I would cry.
That snare tone is pure magic.
Evan Vincent did you hear the Holy Trinity episode about phat snare sounds? This is exactly what Jack was talking about!
namakudamono I've seen two of them. One was a Shaker and I forgot what what the other one was. Gonna go watch it.
Evan Vincent Yes, they’re really great videos! Tambourine, guitar, minimalist funk producers. However there is also a podcast/audio only episode on Soundcloud about the snare. The anecdote about the snare sound in Born in the USA is gold!
All in the details hey!
hi-hats too
Man I’m still on this song in 2022.
joe. dart.
on the
short. scale. bass
I choose to believe he just grows a foot taller occasionally so the bass sometimes looks small
He 's got the f'ckin style
Short scale
Big tone
He really has a thing for budget p basses
this drum groove inspired me to pick up the drums again after 12 years...
Are we just not going to acknowledge that cello?
i don't know him but his fashion sense is off the charts
Extra bonus points for working on his core muscles while on the job. Plus the Steve Zissou hat.
Just dropping in on a Vulf session with Gadson and David T. Walker then got some painting to do
Yess a cello :)
lol to all
It always crack me up to see the how chill David T Walker and James Gadson are, and then we pan to Joe with the neck moves. Winning it everyday, Joe Dart!
David T. Walker definitely aint making me run away from this song
David T. Walker & James Gadson LEGENDS
Mr. Finish Line is going to be the album to save 2017
KYUN Seriously, I've ended up listening to each single for days after they release one
ikr? I am so excited!
incredible album, vulfpeck crushing it. however, it should be said that there have been several excellent albums this year so far and this has been a great year for music; Grizzly Bear's "Painted Ruins," LCD Soundsystem's "american dream," Gorillaz's "Humanz," Tyler the Creator's "Flower Boy," Thundercat's "Drunk," The War on Drugs, Brand New, SZA, Kendrick Lamar, Little Dragon, everything that Snarky Puppy, Cory Henry, Jacob Collier, Louis Cole, GroundUP Music is doing etc... : D
Indeed
Humanz was trash in my opinion
This is so good. Did I travel back to the 70's?? Best modern soul I have heard.
The snare tone 🤤
Drake Martin what's the snare!?? Brand/model/measures
If this came out in the 70s it'd be a global classic
IS NO ONE GONNA TALK ABOUT THOSE GUITAR EMBELISHMENTS???!!!!
Effortless. While looking at a chart. And perfect.
@@dennish9553 T Walker is just from another world
This song is like a time machine. Click play and suddenly it's 1969 and Motown is topping the charts. Great stuff!
walker and gadson what a coup
Wurlitzers are such treasures
This is f*cking fantastic, guys.
Joey is an extremely talented singer and songwriter, and his performance in this was absolutely captivating.
Whoever the cameraman is knows this group's dynamics very well, as they capture the many truly magical moments:
Here are the ones i have observed thus far.
0:23 That whole-band tension as joe starts up the bassline.
0:28 nice edit to a shot of intense concentration from everyone.
0:35-0:50 Joe, David and James are already locked in tighter than a virgin wearing a chastity belt.
0:55 David's expression.
1:02-1:12 Jack and Gabe appreciate the groove.
1:25-1:35 James feels the emotion behind the lyrics, he's watching Antwuan and Theo. Winces a little bit but never skips a beat.
1:39 Antwuan watches Joey sing the line "i try not to expect much anymore".
1:48-1:53 Joey sings.
1:54-2:10 Lead and backup call and respond, then intertwine.
2:11-2:40 David's guitar face and Joe's bass neck steal the show, this is my favourite moment in this video. I could watch this bit over and over.
2:42 Intense concentration and sick drumming from James as he watches the singers intently, glaces at the camera for a split second
2:58 That Lo-fi drumkit though...
3:16 cello slide
3:19 guitar slide
The rest of the video is constant pan shots and cuts to incredible moments.
(Yes, I realize that at this point I have classified most of the video as "truly magical" but I couldn't think of any I could remove.)
4:25 Ending few moments, shot cuts from Joey sitting on the wurli, to joey playing sax with woody on the wurli, which tells us they probably did a full take with joey on sax.
Jack, if it exists, PLEASE give us this track. I know Joey's singing is too good to not be on this track but it can't hurt to let us hear the alternate take. I think if would be sweet to hear as an instrumental as well. Just a thought. Also, I COULD be wrong. Maybe you just laid down the sax sections in isolation, but i don't think that's the Stratton way. His A&R on this couldn't be clearer. I think he'd just get the band to play the whole track and have Joey lay down the sax parts when they come up. The more natural way. I know it exists, Jack, and I want to hear it.
7catstied2gether as Joey is without headphones in the ending makes me feel there’s a track behind that scene :) good call
thanks for giving me an excuse to watch the whole video again a few more times back to back
You forgot Theo and Antwaun at 2:08
Marvin Gaye na veia!!! Afinadissimos, blueseiros, do jeito q amo!!!!!!! Brasil...😚😚💖💖💖💖💖
You sure are a gentleman and a scholar
Such Al green/Marvin vibes from this! You guys a legendary and I was taken back by joeys voice
It's more Isley Brothers than Al/Marvin, with a small twist of Daryl & John.
Brian Gray The whole LP is Marvin all over! The tone, the vocals, it’s the perfect Marvin sound.
David T. Walker......Melted butter. Nuff' said.
I came here because James Gadson is here, and now I've added some new musical friends into my life..... Thanks and Blessings Y'all.....
THE James Gadson. Wow.
One does not simply skip out on a new Vulfpeck video
I got to hear it early boi ;)
This song is a masterpiece. Maybe even their magnum opus.
But who knows if that'll be true forever? It looks like their songs just keep getting better. Let's see them top this one.
I would argue “Wait for the Moment” is their magnum opus so far, but yes this song is definitely a masterpiece!
@@d0cy0 Funny. That's my second favorite. :)
Mr. Finish Line is gonna be my favorite album this year
I think this might be the perfect song. I can’t stop listening to it.
did those harmonies travel here in a dang time machine?
Aren't they just the greatest?
Yeah the harmonies at 2:01 gave me chills.... Nice job Theo/Antwaun
james gadson is a true master of drums!
I know right??? I love the clip at around 0:50 in where you can see him playing inaudible subdivisions on his right leg, just so that every one of those delicious backbeats lands exactly in the right place. That's a drummer, good people...
Quite possibly the most tasteful drum arrangement of all time. I mean, that delayed fill at 3:20, absolutely perfect
I realised some time ago that he actually is the legendary drummer from the bill wither's aint no sunshine video (I mean he is way more than just that but I was mindblown when I somehow recognized him from one video to the other)
Wow...proper Soul Music. Transported me back to the '70's and the great vocal bands. Spinners, Temptations, O Jays, et al. One of the few forms of music Americans get to call their own.
5 years and 500 listens later I'm still blown away by this Arrangement every time
just when you think they can't get any more smoother
this happens
Joe is so tasteful. The greatest.
David is my favorite in this video)
Dosik sounds like an angel!
forever and always!
Good song
Honestly who could thumbs this down? This is the last pure thing..
“I try not to expect much any more”…for some dammed reason that line slays me. Brilliant stuff. Manages to be bang up to date whilst still making me feel like reminiscing. Class act.
Best song of the 2010s
Man, this is song is a blessing to my ears. Song after song after song... amazement!
Dearest Vulfpeck, please come visit the UK soon. We need your music again.
Oh shit the boys got a new camera
and a good colorist too. All seems retro-y. Whose the editor? Jack Stratton?
Most underrated A&R success of this century, right here. Hands down. The results... Remarkable.

This group this sound is everything we need in this world.. its pure love and compassion!! I thank Patrick for opening my ears to such sweet funky soulful sounds!! Keep doing what you do for me VulfPeck!!!
Anytime you think about her
the feelings there
she's thinking about you
about you
Anytime you see her in the street
what choice is there
she's gotta see you
after you're through
I gotta believe it baby
that your thinking about me maybe
I don't know what you're thinking about
on any other day
when you keep on Running Away
Running Away
you're Running Away
I try not to expect much anymore
It's over now
but what was it all for
what was it all for
And i'll always care about you baby
The feelings here
we grew it too long
to say it's gone
it's gone
I gotta believe it baby
That your thinking about me maybe
I don't know what you're thinking about
on any other day
when you keep on Running Away
Running Away
you're Running Away
And i don't mind thinking about her
as long as she's
thinking about me
bout me
I gotta believe it baby
That your thinking about me maybe
I don't know what you're thinking about
on any other day
when you keep on Running Away
Running Away
you're Running Away
Running Away

The switch from 16th notes to 8th notes on the hi hat at 2:51 kills me everytime
David T. Walker. One of the badddest guitarist. I remember when he came out with the album "The Sidewalk". Unique touch, sound and approach to his instrument. Youngsters, pay attention.
this is ART.. young musicians : listen!! understand!!
I'm not in love with anyone at the moment. But now I am. At least that's what it feels like when I listen to this tune.
Music/Art creating feeling.
i love how happy jack is
What a line up. Those gadson hits🤩
Yup! There is still good in this world.
Reviving a lost genre, thank you.
Love that is all one take with warts and all (David T. Walker mishaps)
Love to see the old timers tearing it up: bringing the chops, bringing the wisdom, bringing the class.
That is the widest short scale I've ever heard and I'm always coming back for it
We need more Joey on the vocals.
This is healing music
Joey doesn't sing on a lot of their songs but when he does, good lord
This is Vulfpeck's best song!
The Sound of the Hi-Hat !!! I'm just melting. The accent on the ''4 and'' Form this point 1:10 yeah
This song could have a million different recordings and I'd listen to them all
When a song made in 2018 sounds like its from the 60s-80s, you're onto something. Masterpiece!
