Tommy Marquez sits down with the five-time CrossFit Games champion, Mathew Fraser, after winning his fifth straight title in the most dominant performance of any CrossFitter in history.
I started crossfit 6months ago, i watched Mat's videos and i was like huh okey , now after i see , i cannot believe what he is capable of doing, big respect for your hard work! You are really a fittest guy on earth!
One of Fraser's better interviews, for sure (in my opinion). I think this was a good after dinner sweet to follow the exceptionally well executed games. Marquez, as always, was consistent and personable.
I agree, two different men that took two different directions. I feel like rich is more hollywood crossfit, he has built a name, a brand and a small kingdom from CF and mat is the Hard work put your head down and do work side of CF. Both great and both classy not trying to compare themselves.
Same with me. Rich was untouchable for me. But when you get to know Mat, his dedication and thinking. And that conecction he has with Tia. Breathtaking. The most dominant athletse in history. And how people forget they are not slowing down yet. Mat is 30 and Tia just 26. They are at their peak.
i remember mat talking about his alarm clock on the mind muscle project podcast. its really unique. i ended up getting one and it really helps wake up naturally
Mat is so methodical, mentally strong, and dedicated. I was wondering if any interviewer or, Mat himself, can explain/quantify the fittest man in "history," that he keeps repeating? Mat, do you mean in all of recorded history, or in the history of the CrosFit games? Please explain exactly what you mean. I am a fan, and it's good to be confident, but ever since you said that, I've been wondering... Thank you. Congratulations.
@@emuchannel934 When he says it, and asked "are you really the fittest man in history," he has a big smile and says, "yes, definitely..." as if he meant in human history. I just whish he would specify. However, thank you for your comment and I want to believe you, because it is the logical answer. 👍
13:50 I'm not really sure what doubters hes talking about. Hes been the favorite the whole time and hes still the favorite to repeat for years to come. Mat is 30 not 36.
LOL, indeed, and at 50 he'll still be beating the average Rx 25 year old! 😃👍 Question is - will he want to do this for another 5 years.... 10 x 3 min all out assault bike intervals before breakfast kind of thing...
When he said "5 time champion" I had a flash back to Booker T in 2002-4 when we would constantly remind everyone he was the "5 time, 5 time, 5 time, 5 time, 5 time WCW Champion." I hope Matt doesn't do this. :-)
@@kelseyjbradley He said it in one of his interviews, either the All In documentary or with Craig Richey. It was in response to “How do you beat Mat Fraser?” I personally don’t think it was cool of Mat to call Fikowski and Vellner out like that. But hey, he’s the GOAT. So....
Okay interview. Mat is cool and it's always interesting to learn about the mindset of a champion, but I get a little frustrated with the CrossFit media community. In particular, they all only seem to ask pretty soft questions, or questions in which the answers are kinda obvious. I used to think it was because HQ had it's own media apparatus, that HQ had a vested interest in ensuring CF is portrayed in a positive light, and no one in CF media wanted to bite the hand that feeds them, but Morning Chalk Up and others are relatively independent and have no such connection to HQ, yet they still seem to tow the company line. Incedently, the closest that we've gotten to having open and candid conversations about the sport and it's potential shortcomings was when Ricky got caught doping. Unfortunately, HQ circled the wagons, and rather than acknowledging that a legitimate temptation exists to use PEDs, they just turned Ricky into a pariah and brushed it off as an extraordinary event, never to be discussed again. But as we all know, it was not a one-off event and positive test results have only increased since then. This is just one specific example, but it does raise interesting questions that no one has bothered to ask. How have performances and the body compositions of athletes improved markedly in a few short years when training methods have remained largely the same? Why are testing results only realeased at the sole description of HQ? Furthermore, why doesn't HQ publish ALL testing results, rather than just results from positive tests? What additional steps can be taken to keep the sport clean? And so forth... Obviously PED talk is kinda toxic, but my point is there are obvious areas in which the sport can improve (programming, athlete safety, the games qualification process, etc.), and the independent media ecosystem that has developed around CF has the unique ability to start conversations that can help improve the sport. That said, I think this fails to happen because they are too cozy with one another. The media class is supposed to be impartial and critical, but it's difficult to remain impartial and critical when you're buddies with the athletes, the directors, the executives, etc. In order for the media to flourish they'll have to create a professional distance with the athlete's and the organization, but they'll also have to be willing forgoe the privileged access that they've grown accustomed to receiving.
What would have asked Mat that aren't softball questions? When he talked about liking and disliking events I would have asked what he didn't like. Would you have asked him about PEDs? That would seem like weird timing. I've never seen in any other sport athletes be asked about PEDs unless they tested positive or someone else tested positive. It's not Mat's job to explain why he is better than Rich Froning was. HQ only releases positive results just like every other sport I believe. Top athletes have said they get tested multiple times per year, so you'd essentially be asking for CrossFit to release their testing schedule. On your second point, I think performances have increased as the sport has aged. In 2011, the sport was 4 years old so the longest anyone could have been training for the sport of crossfit was 4 years. We are now 13 years in and seeing people who have spent 10 years training for the sport. I think Medeiros said he started crossfit at 12 years old so he had 9 years training crossfit prior to the games. Someone like Rich Froning probably had maybe a year or two of training crossfit before his first games. In the early years it was people who worked out jumping in to CrossFit at their athletic peak but only have a small amount of sport specific training. I think we are seeing performances leveling off the past few years. Third place this year has the same capabilities as third place three or four years ago, whereas there was huge difference between the 2007 podium and 2011 podium, and then again the 2011 podium vs the 2015 podium. Where we will probably see change in the next few years is as we get a generation of athletes with 15 years of crossfit training as they reach their peak is a narrowing of the gap between the top athlete(s) and the 10th place athlete(s). Media members also have to be friends with the athletes to get access. The only time there are press conferences is at the games. Other sports have media availability after every competition and periodically throughout the week in a sport like football or basketball. I don't see CrossFit requiring athletes to hold public media availability throughout the year, so to get the interview(s) the athletes have to like you. Until athletes are paid some sort of annual wage or stipend the way media access is granted isn't going to change.
Dave Castro said he was slipping. Brent Fikowski said he'd never beat Mat in a snatch event, just like Mat would never beat him in a run/swim/run event. Patrick Velner said Mat's never competed under pressure.
What is your point? we aren't talking about comparing genetics or talent, but results. When Eddie Hall lifted 500kg, did you doubt he was the first to have done so? Or are Liu Xiao Jun's records because someone else in history *might* have beat hi if he has trained as many hours? "Could" is not "did". If your point is that an Ironman Triathlon should be held on the first or last day of the Games and count 300 or 400 points, because that time domain is missing from the Crossfit Games, that's a different topic.
@@BernhardKohli My point is that by stating "fittest in history" it reflects badly on Crossfit as it's a claim that is impossible to prove. The credibility of the sport will be taken into question, as will the results.
It’s time for Dave Castro to go away. Mat Fraser is slipping? Dave Castro is about only Dave Castro. Which is surprising as he served as a Navy Seal , the ultimate team first unit. He thinks he’s some sort of CrossFit hype guru but during his tenure CrossFit remains under appreciated, under exposed, under the radar, and grossly under promoted. And the failure of CrossFit to be appreciated as the mainstream sport it should be falls squarely at Castro’s overrated feet. Does anyone doubt for a second how much bigger CrossFit would be with a Dana White at the helm? He’d had first rate commentators. He’d have compelling, professionally produced products. He’d had one-on-one comps. He’d make CrossFit enormously popular. So rather than claim that the absolute best the sport has ever seen has slipped, maybe he ought to go gently into that good night and let someone who knows what he is doing take charge of the product. Mat Fraser skipping? What a joke. And btw, why would any one in his position do anything other than praise his sports number one product?
Dang, well said. Totally agree. CrossFit is a fringe sport because of what you said and a few weird and aloof events, like handstand walking. Is walking on your hands actually used to gain fitness?
