Aoife O'Donovan with Tim O'Brien - Bright Sunny South
In the bright sunny south in peace and content
Oh, the days of my boyhood I scarcely have spent
From deep flowing springs to the broad flowing streams
Ever dear in my memory, and sweet in my dreams
I leave my confinement and comfort of life
For the dangers of bloodshed, provision, and strife
I've come to conclose and reply with my word
As I shoulder my musket and billet my sword
My father looked sad as he begged me to part
And Mother embraced me with anguish of heart
And my beautiful sister looked pale in her woe
As she grabbed me and blessed me and told me to go
Oh, father, dear father
For me do not weep
For on some high mountain
I mean for to sleep
And the dangers of war
I intend for to share
And for sickness and death
I intend to prepare
Oh, mother, dear mother
For me do not weep
For a mother's kind words
I ever will keep
You taught me to be brave
From a boy to a man
I'm going in defence of my own native land
Oh, sister, dear sister
I cannot tell the woe
Oh, your tears and your sorrows
They trouble me so
I must be a-going
For here I cannot stand
I'm going in defence
Of my own native land
I'm going in defence
Of my own native land
I'm going in defence of my own native...land.
I saw her perform this song solo,in Bristol this week. Truly sensational.
Love how this song builds on all levels: vocal, instruments and rhythm.
I’m liking O’Donovon more and more. Just heard of her before these sessions, but her voice is special.
Great music :-) Transatlantic Sessions is the best series ever made, I think!
Never a false note. Never.
Wish it was still on BBC
Awesome voice and the house band on these performances are class 👍
I love Aoife, now that I’ve learned to spell her name.
Pure.
oh my god.
Grandissimi, vi adoro
Beautiful voice and easy on the eyes. Great rendition!
Ahhhh...........Banjo!
Beautifu; and the song's not bad either.
Antiseptic... but with great musicians.
Beautiful with an L.
Not bad for yankees! :-)
Maybe she should do roots music--"Dis aint workin"
This is roots music, and you must be deaf.
I would suggest the Alison Krauss, Union Station version. It's not the European politically correct song we hear here. Why would anyone change the original lyrics? That's just wrong.
Nothing about this song is politically correct. My ancestor fought for the South and if I knew where he was buried I go piss on him. The only worthwhile US Civil War songs are John Brown's Body and The Fighting 69th.
@@iharten I'm sorry for you. It was 150 years ago. All my family were Union men and the Confederates fought well. I respect southerners, and you forgot "We'll fight for Uncle Sam".
Music is always open to interpretation, whether we like the results or not. Right and wrong have nothing to do with it. Enjoy what you like, and don’t waste your time with what you don’t.
The Doc Watson version is as good as it gets
This is a warrior's song, full of angst and aggression. She is a very fine singer, but she lacks the strength of voice to carry off this song, especially with so much instrumentation.
It isn't just "instrumentation" though...it's Aly Bain, Jerry Douglas, Russ Barenberg, Danny Freakin' Thompson and Tim O'Brien and I don't know the guys' name, but the piper is fantastic too! You can't take a minimalistic approach to vocals with that kind of powerhouse backing band. You just can't. I understand it may not perfectly match the tone of the song, or other versions, but it's still a great piece of music. Oh, and the drummer does good with the mini-kit.
Yes.
I agree but..but.. she is somehow allowing all of them to shine and be the real star of this performance everything is detectable from all the musicians and she just keeps chugging along looking good and looks like she knows they are the real badasses it works for me
Not true to the original intent.
Aoife is a little overwrought in her performance IMHO. I think it needs a bit more stoic repression in the delivery, considering the subject matter. A noble effort, though, on a creative arrangement of a great, deep song. Great musicians all.
