The Swiss law doesn’t say you cannot open an account as an US citizen. But banks don’t want to do it as it would be more work for them to report back to US. But they cannot legally deny you as it would be discrimination. You just have to refuse to be denied.

I bank internationally with UBS. I’m Swiss, residing in the UK. All the UBS paperwork i filled out always had sections asking if i have any links to the USA. It’s obvious that if you’re a US citizen and don’t have Swiss Citizenship or Residency, then you can’t open a bank account with them.

  • @ssrbgangimaribotan6thofthe12

People in the comments says US citizens are not allowed to make Swiss bank account due to tax evasion, regulatory permissions, etc etc. But they don't know the real reason. The Swiss government banned all US citizens from making Swiss bank account.
Why? It's due to Swiss law where they absolutely are not allowed to reveal private information of their banking customers. This law helped them to stay neutral and protected Swiss from invasions for millennia, so it became a tradition they are proud of after a long time. But it got broken in the modern time due to the US government pressuring them and forced the Swiss government and banks to reveal information of some of their customers, which went against their value and broken the trust in the Swiss banking system that was built for millennia.
Thus, due to this embarrassing incident added with accumulated grudge (like the spying incident where CIA were caught tapping and spying into Swiss communications, etc), the Swiss government made a regulation where US citizens are not allowed to open a Swiss bank account anymore as a petty revenge/complaints. (But there are some exceptions to this case too)
    edit: typos
