One of the most anxiety-inducing lots of my life was warming up with the Mandarins in West Chester, PA in 2005. Vic Firth was there doing a lot video of us. Then, Tom Float walks up and checks us out. THEN, the Cadets battery (who had been rehearsing in the stadium) takes a cigarette break right in front of us and ends up watching our lot. 17-year-old me was terrified. This line hit in the chest harder than almost any line I’ve ever seen. Entire line was incredible. Seriously one of my all time favorites.
Got the chance to march at Bucs under Johnny Trujillo who marched Cadets 05 and 06. This year definitely got referenced a lot, not just for how clean they were but their technique, definition, and the way they carried themselves as members. Without a doubt one of the best drumlines to ever perform and I'm happy to see you guys finally get around to covering it.
Fun fact....we were originally going to march 11 snares this season (8 vets) But due to some injuries and life conflicts, it shrank over the season.
In 2004 we had 1 vet and 8 rookies on the snare line....we learned a lot and grew together that season. I personally think that's why this line was special. Veteran knowledge of the system and a collective hunger to be excellent.
man I totally forgot we were gonna march 11 this summer! That was gonna be so awesome and then we had to relearn all the drill because it was written for 11 snares womb womb
Brannon and Kiel! I was just showing my 7 year old some old videos of our line for the first time and stumbled across this. Great to see comments by a couple of fellow '05 snare vets. :-)
Another crazy thing to add here is that I don't believe we won many (any?) big regional competitions until the last 1-2 weeks of the season. It wasn't even a given that we would win drums. Seems wild looking back knowing how it all turned out.
This specific corps was my first love.
I was going into my Freshman year, and my drum instructor took me and several other students to the Louisville 2005 show.
I immediately knew I had to be a part of the drum corps world and ended up marching 2 summers 08-09.
Huge shout out to Tom Aungst for being an incredible writer, and major inspiration for many years.
This Cadets percussion section was the business all season long. We (Bluecoats) saw them early and often in 05- I think the first show we were at with Cadets was Toledo, fairly early- and it was clear even early on that they were something special. The book seemed a lot more demanding than the 01-04 books, and I remember thinking that it felt like a quantum leap forward compositionally. The snare add-in during the Bjork ballad is one of the most effective drum corps moments of all time to me- and it's freakin GROOVIN! Really hoping that the Cadets will be back on the field in 2025- DCI isn't the same without them.
BD Q5 88-92 Vern Johnson was the tenor tech and wrote the tenor feature
According to the BD website, he did 87-90, and 92. In any case, I wish I could have seen what it was like having him as a tech.
@@Jacob.Cornejo Right, he was on Bass Drum in 87, switched to Tenors in 88, took 91 off with the whole Tom Float BD debacle and aged out in 92, I figured it easier to say he was on tenors from 88-92.

Such a cool year, sad to see the cadets go this year especially after such a great year. I hope they come back strong. But these financial things are scary…
Agreed. Hopefully corps across the board can pivot and adjust as needed so groups stop having to take years off. Or at least prevent it from becoming the norm.
A show on how DCI needs to look at these problems would be excellent 👍🏻
@@agedoutpodcast a tuition limit and budget limit for world class and open class would be a good move atleast on paper. Also might put more programs on equal playing field. It would suck in the sense that there would probably be a noticeable quality drop from the year before to the year after taking effect. But for the sake of keeping competitiveness and not having the richest corps win all the time, it would be good for that.
Incredible hand speed between Basses, Snares, and Tenors! Spectacular precision and as Mike says: Clean wins every time!
What a lot of people don’t know, is that during that lot, or I should say, just BEFORE, that lot there was a MASSIVE rain delay. We (BAC 2005) had just finished our show and Cadets had to go back out for a “rewarm”. So what you are witnessing in a lot of this is actually a SECOND lot that had to happen.
This was literally the first drum corps show I ever saw. My older sister had come home from band camp her freshman year of high school and told us her band director told them about this thing called DCI that would be on TV
This is also super nostalgic for me, and a big part of my inspiration for marching percussion performance as I grew up through my HS years. Thank you for highlighting this amazing group!

The only thing missing from the "drumspeak" feature was the rest of the battery air drumming the feature behind the rest.
Gents, love the channel and y'all's commentary on the groups. I am, however, perplexed at how little you reference the brass or front ensemble when you analyze the batterie's parts. Most of the orchestration choices, compositional devices, and interpretive elements you love pointing out are motivated by what's happening in the brass or front ensemble. I'm not trying to contradict anything you're saying, b/c in the vacuum of the lot, your analysis is great. It just seems like your leaving a whole lot of content on the table.
The walking bass line Mike points out at the beginning is a good example. Mike's correct that a walking bass is a good device to provide pulse but once you listen to the full corps, it's obvious that it wasn't written for its function. Instead it was compositional decision to continue and develop the 1/4 note contra/low brass ostinato that begins the movement. When the contras end their ostinato and the low brass begin playing an augmented version of the previous phrase's melody, the 1/4 note walking bass line starts.
When you hear it in the lot, it does sounds like "layering under the snare phrase." But once you listen to the full corps, it's obviously not meant to support the snares. I mean, the snares are barely audible at that point.

One instrument’s part can serve multiple purposes. I’m sure the snares listened to the basses at that segment to line up vertically between the two sections, and the walking bass line naturally supports the brass at at that point in the show too.
Not trying to speak for the guys but it seems like they really only discuss composition in the context of a battery book being its own product, because that’s their forte (not really a pun but intended regardless).

Ya I’m going to have to agree with Evan here. Definitely a top 10 line but there were better lines like 03 (I think could arguably be the best) or the early 90’s had some insaaaaaane clean lines.
