Furthermore, you seem to think that there is one "son basic": the side the side. The break step is back and behind the other foot is the most common "son basic". Also, fast guarachas and many other Cuban music in the son complex is indeed danced on one. But other than that, your post was accurate. :)
I didn't say "everything closed is Cuban". Tango is danced in a closed position too and so are other ballroom dances. Just that dancing to salsa music in a closed position is just that much more so, because that's how Cubans dance to son, danzon, changui etc. Other salsa styles hardly do the closed position. The back and forth mambo basic is *NOT* done in a closed position, and therefore does not appear in son. But stepping forward and backward in a closed position does commonly appear in son.
In the son, stepping forward and back is typically only done for one or two steps as a "stylistic" adorno. Or putting the foot out to the side. I doubt that you can post a video of a Cuban doing son back and forth for more than 1 or 2 bars.
