The Power of Now has truly helped me with overcoming my reactivity. I still have my moments. I no longer identify with my depression, anxiety or even BPD. I've seen hundred of Eckhart's videos and this has to be one of the most warming ones of them all. Mental illness vs presence is a hard question to tackle from an argumentative point of view.
He embraces the use of medicine as a way to strengthen the girl's biological tools to battle against her condition, while at the same same time ackowledging that ultimately there will be no definite cure without Presence.
And through the course of his answer you can feel how his advice is already lessening the burden on that poor girls mental activity. She just lightens up, maybe even sees the light at the end of the tunnel. Very sweet!

Mental illness is the most misunderstood, painful and stigmatized illness that one can have because people cant see it. Its something that has happened weather it be a trauma or what have you in the brain. People should have more patience and compassion with others suffering through whatever they may have. If they dont, you may walk into their room one morning and find something very horrid that could have been avoided if they just had true empathy toward that suffering individual .

@NishitazBlog are you seriously asking this question? Have you ever experienced psychosis or hallucinations? People become suicidal for a myriad of reasons, sometimes it's simply unprocessed trauma, grief - or depression, which in itself can be treated in myriad different ways. Bipolar is like depression and its opposite packed into one and taking you on a ride, snatching your awareness alongside. Why would enlightenment fundamentally change this structure, as it is only a realization of the transcendent plane - not really 'fixing' the psychological

Too much significance is given to the mind by the west. Thus we get involved in the psychological drama of our lives thinking it is the most important thing. But my big toe is also part of my body strange how we never get involved too much with our big toe.
The toe is an example.. but once we learn to stop giving significance to our mind... what it does to annoy us simply starts to die and fade. It only lasts because we give it attention rather then look at it through awareness.

I had the same diagnosis as this young lady and then some. God bless her soul hearing her story and reminiscing on how I was made me shed tears and how far I've come I was on every medicine for over a decade that you can imagine rapid cycling and hallucinating in and out of institutions, suicidal, homicidalI finally found myself and awakened learning to heal my trauma and realizing diagnosis are nothing but labels and at the end of the day it is all trauma-based and we all just need to heal and learn to love ourselves, watching this young lady made me realize how far I have came and I pray the same for her and many like her, my heart goes out to anyone struggling with a mental illness I hope they find their strength inside them like I did me, it took a lot of hard work I am finally off all my medications and I feel better than I have in my entire life it was a slow process getting off of them so I took my time the doctors always brainwashed me saying if I got off my meds I'd end up in jail or dead but that was furthest from the truth, I'm more alive and in tune with myself more than ever, I'm now one with myself, I've meditated a lot done a lot of self healing learning to love myself, I did a lot of shadow work facing my demons accepting and forgiving myself at the end of the day we all just need to heal, if I can do it anyone can, I definitely do not recommend medication being the answer though that's my personal opinion, I pray for everyone and their healing in their journey love and light to you all ✨💜💫 but watching this lady definitely brought back memories of how I was only a couple years ago and how free I am now sometimes you have to look for the answers within yourself and discover your own truth. And God bless Eckhart, He's help me tremendously throughout my journey, since focusing on my spiritually I've grown and learned a lot, especially a lot more with staying in the present moment and not the past nor the future, And also learning more about being conscious, trusting myself and my own intuition and not looking for approval from anyone but myself. Being in nature, reading, meditating, Being creative doing things I enjoy doing for myself, protecting my energy setting healthy boundaries and learning to keep my circle small, has really helped a lot I pray for everybody on their journey!!! And it makes me think of what Eckhart says, "Suffering is only necessary until you realize it is not necessary!" 💯 Very profound, Love and Light and Healing Energy to you all ✨💟😘🤗☯️♾️

This is a nice thought, but really, it can be a very hurtful one, if you actually present it to some people with real, severe mental disorders along with a few intuitive 'simple solutions'. The thing is, most people really do not understand how complicated and damaging a lot of these mental illnesses actually are - because they tend to take their ego for granted, they take for granted the fact that they function, that it's easy to, say, go get groceries or handle a short conversation with a stranger, or not get lost in a city, or plan basic things and execute, or relate to others in a civilised, non-threatening way. For some people, these things could very easily become extremely difficult, and the 'disorders' are in a way, means to cope. What if internally one is actually a toddler, for instance, and has no ability to function beyond their defense mechanisms? I feel that there is a very serious lack of reliable knowledge in the intersection of spirituality and mental health (the more abnormal/less typical cases) - and there's little confirmation whether formal meditation, for instance, or work with the pain body is certainly safe for those people.

Exactly! I wish he had left off the suggestion to try to become unmedicated. There’s nothing wrong with taking medication. Suggesting meditation alone could fix everything just adds to the stigma and isolating feeling of mental illness in my opinion.. With medication AND meditation, balance is attainable. Psychotic symptoms especially aren’t something to take lightly.

When she was on medication she functioned normally. and made a huge contribution to the world in her field of science.

Anyone who has watched a loved one with psychotic symptoms have the goal of going off their medications knows how troubling that can be, even if they initially start doing it under clinical guidance. I wish his advice had been- you can practice presence no matter what medications you’re taking to help you, it just might not feel as blissful as your unmedicated manic state where you can talk with trees🤷🏼‍♀️ or a more eloquently worded version of that... lol..

I like Eckhart’s teachings but echo what others are saying that he may have missed the mark here. Bipolar disorder with a history of suicide is no joke. Meditation is wonderful but it is not always a substitute for psychiatric treatment. If this woman’s hand were gushing blood, no one would tell her to meditate through it. They would ask her to get medical treatment, and psychiatric conditions are no different. There’s a real stigma against medication and I hope she doesn’t let shame stop her from continuing her treatment. She’s finally a bright and vibrant person, and that’s from the medication. Let’s celebrate her achievement.

It seems Eckart does not understand the severity of bipolar disorder. Suggesting she try and get off of medication when it is giving her the longest neutral period she’s ever had, seems unfortunate. Do we try and strengthen presence to stop the need for insulin? Sometimes our bodies really do benefit from help in stabilizing specific chemical imbalances.

I really like Eckhart teachings, but in this case, you have exactly my same thoughts. Thank you for voicing this out. Sometimes mental illnesses require medication for stabilising chemical imbalances. By dismissing the need of medication, the potential severity of these type of illnesses is easily downplayed when they do have physical roots and impacts. Meditation can help, but sometimes more than that is needed.

I also have been listening/watching/reading Eckhart Tolle's materials since 2007, and still do until today. I found that the medication and presence practice can go hand in hand. It does not have to be one or the other. I agree with your comparison with insulin. The same thing applies to Bipolar Disorder.

yes. I have a brother with bipolar disorder, the severe type.
for a decade he's fought being on medication, and every year he would then be hospitalized. Why? because he wasn't taking his medication
meditation can help benefit anyone, it is not a substitute for severe mental illness!
just like a diabetic needs insulin. ..
there's a ted talk by Dr Xavier Amador titled "I'm not sick, I don't need help!"
and it points out how half of people suffering from bipolar and schizophrenia do not take their meds, when they need to for their benefit!
Unfortunately, speakers like Sam Harris pointed out that prescense and meditation for severe clinical mental illness does not cure it, it doesn't mean there's no benefit in practicing mindfulness with medication.
exercise and diet are important too.

    • @themorningmist99
      @themorningmist99 Před 3 lety +15

Hmmm. But he's not suggesting she just drops the meds, but that she be guided by a professional and slowly taper off. That's not wrong! Now I'm not bipolar, but I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia with delusions of grandeur, and it so happened that despite the "impossible" for me to recover beyond the need for meds outlook of the various psychiatrists that I saw, I was able to recover to where I don’t need meds, and I'm symptom free. I haven't been on meds for well over 12 years now.
Eckhart isn't wrong about what's possible. But the journey is likely to lead into the darkness before the light appears again. This is the "pull" he speaks of. But the anchor keeps one on the path, and enables them to resist the pull. Eventually, the pulls fade, and all that remains is the self that remained anchored throughout the storms.

Dear Eckhart: Thank you for the profound effect your teachings have had on my life. That being said, in my opinion your advice to this young woman to think about going off medication is misguided. Much better that she appreciates and continues the practices, through which she is creating balance in her life. Should her DOCTOR suggest that she get off or change her medication in the future, fine. Until that time, keep doing what is working now.

Please stay strong sweet and inspiring young soul. Bipolar 1 is immensely "challenging" but you are not alone. Thank you for having the courage to share your struggles - it means a lot to others such as myself who can empathize and it will also help the public to better understand the condition.. Sending you so much love and light !!

Its all to do with awareness and energy. She laughs about it. So she is there to think of it positively. Meditation will work for her. And energy practices such as qigong. It will calm her and nervous system in gradual time

Bipolar is not a nervous system disorder. It's a brain disease that you clearly don't know anything about.

What a wonderful being she is. After suffering from stress I can say, once I knew what it was, it has opened my eyes and made me feel more compassion and understanding for all that suffer or suffered with mental illness.

Meditation 🧘🏼‍♀️of all kinds! This thinking mind has to have the balance of being. I'd much rather just meditate then do! Oh yes to just watch the animals and trees plants flowers the clouds in the sky all day! That's a perfect day!

Being depressed or manic yet knowing that it won't last both provide powerful motivation to remain as the detached alert witness. Psychological pain has freed Eckhart and many others. I hope she's kind to herself, sees that emotions are not her, and wakes up soon. Detachment and middle way teachings like "Affirming Faith in Mind." (capital M in "Mind" = Awareness) can help. Good job, Eckhart, and good job, lovely kindhearted person.

This is something worth to study. Presence and its effect on different mental illnesses. You should make more videos about this Echkart!

Wow, what a beautiful treasure she is.
With my much less severe BP I think what goes up must come down and that the killer down is just something I have to accept. I have also noticed over the decades that the anxiety that now accompanies my depression these days is the fearful feeling of being trapped and alone, I can’t handle my own alone company. I am working on presence and challenging myself with accepting the aloneness and even as far as using silence during the day (no TV, music, radio) when I’m at home. I have a feeling it is already working after a couple of days. Hope this may give hope. Eckhart’s videos have become a great comfort to me.
I love ‘getting’ and agreeing with stuff he’ll touch on, you can see it in your life and experience and it’s great inspiration!
