You've been a great teacher and I've finally understood rigging without having to constantly revisit your robot rigging vdos. I hate and avoid weight painting but this is very well explained. You definitely have a knack for teaching. Thanks a ton.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Weight painting took me a bit of time to learn as well. In the next video I'll be going into more detail on certain techniques.

Hey, yeah this was a mistake I made in the first video. I cover this at 3:15 in this video.

Cant you fix the problem with the helmet tail by setting up a shape key to correct the shape as the tail moves up so you dont get that ugly hump on it?

I think I can, although I'll have to test to see if the shape keys will transfer into the game engine once I bake down the animation.

Please tell me, how do you draw the weight for the left and right bones at the same time, drawing only on, for example, the right bone? I can't do that! Thanks!

Hi if you look here: czcams.com/video/wuo6B79CNvU/video.html
I highlight the option called auto normalize. Just a couple of options down is an option called x-mirror. Make sure this is turned on.
Or you can find some of the options here: docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/sculpt_paint/weight_paint/tool_settings/symmetry.html

Hello, what version of blender did you create your example files in? Did you change your preferences in blender to allow selection from the outliner while in edit and pose modes without have to switch back to object mode? I've run into a crashing bug that I can't reproduce independently in a 2.91 new file because blender won't let me select another object from the outliner without first going back to object mode, but in your files I can. (Select armature from outliner, set pose mode, select mesh from outliner, set edit mode, select and assign vertices to groups, select armature from outliner (already in pose mode), move bone, undo > crash). Sorry for the rambling post! It's late and the bug is driving me mad.

Hey, yeah for most of this video I've been working on 2.90 and 2.91. I made this video a while ago that talks about switching between the modes: czcams.com/video/rX6Wmf7DQXQ/video.html
I would try out what you're trying to do in a clean file (just a cube and an armature) to see if that causes the crash in 2.90 and 2.91, and if it does I would report it to the Blender team.
If that does not cause a crash, but my files do, try skipping a version or two in the example files.

Did you hear a huge collective moan after you published this rigging section? 😣 Change is always met with some resistance, but we will learn... eventually. 🤔

I think I've worked out all the kinks of the painting, I do find things easier and more responsive in 2.9. I've also been looking into this tool: blendermarket.com/products/lazy-weight-tool it has some really nice features.
