- This is my first attempt at uploading videos here on youtube. Over the years a few people (not that many, really!!) have asked me to do the odd tuition video for some of the solos I do with Imelda. I decided to start with a song we've never released and no longer play live!!!
However, I spent a long time getting a solo worked out that I really liked for this song over the years we played it, and it's as flash as I get these days, so thought it might be a good one to start off with. It's heavily influenced by Scotty Moore, Grady Martin, Cliff Gallup, Joe Maphis, Eddie Cochran, Merle Travis, Hank Garland, all dosed up with a hefty amount of tough-twang attitude from Brian Setzer. And probably a few others I've stolen from since I first started playing...
I'll post another video later that goes a bit more in-depth but I'm not very technically minded so will probably not be able to explain very well how things are done. But I did add a slowed down version on the end for this video as I find that extremely helpful when other players do it on youtube when I'm trying to learn something.
If you get something out of it I'll be very happy. God knows, I've ripped enough stuff off from youtube over the years!!!

I'm using a Gretsch 6120 Custom Shop, built by Stephen Stern in 2008. The amp is just a little Roland Micro thing with 4 x 5" speakers. The Gretsch has a P90 and Seymour Duncan Dynasonic with fixed arm Bigsby - Just like Eddie!

It's great that you have posted these videos. It is difficult to find many usefull rockabilly lessons on youtube and these are packed with great stuff. You are one of my favourite players along side Cliff Gallup and Brian Setzer. I can hear their influence throughout your playing and I like how you bring something new to the table.

Agree with all the comments. I too discovered you quite by accident while watching the Jeff Beck special honoring Les Paul. You are simply amazing! I am just (finally) learning guitar at a rather advanced age and you are quite the inspiration!

Great playing. Love the Travis pickin'. Sounds like a bit of Chet Atkins slipped in there too. Iv always thought that guitarists are the biggest thieves (in the nicest possible way) the way we steal licks and make them are own. I know I am!! All the best. James :)

damn do you ever hit a bum note ! glad to see you showin what you can do , if you were born 50 yrs earlier you would too have been amongst the greats with eddie, vincent,orbison, lee lewis etc but you have something different to add your singing voice is better than alot of the 50's stars ! upload more please awesome to watch thankyou.
