  • Chinese success may have led to resentment in the past, but today children of Chinese immigrants embrace both their family history and the life they've forged in Mexico. CCTV's Franc Contreras reports how Chinese culture is flourishing in Mexico.

I was in Mexico City on a business trip earlier this year...the taxi driver, after he learned that I am Chinese, turned his car radio to a Chinese station, which played both Mandarin and Cantonese pop songs....Being a Chinese who has lived in the US for more than half of my entire life, I felt both moved and proud..For reasons I could not explain, I found my eyes were turning wet...

I worked with Mexicans as fruit pickers here in California, USA in the 1950's. They were a friendly and cheerful people. At night the agents from the Immigration and Naturalization Service would come to take them away. In the morning, my boss had to find a new bunch of Mexicans. The same heart-breaking events have persisted to this day.

México might of had a racially separation at one point in history but i'm sure didn't last long. Back in the time of slavery in the US and big part of the world, México was slavery free and it actually helped many African slaves that fled the US. Nowdays México is very welcoming of any inmigrants including Americans that hate mexicans so much. Mexico's biggest inmigrant population is from the US as of matter of fact.
México is a welcoming warm hearted country that is just looking for economic progress so it's people can stay and work in their comunities and don't have to emmigrate to countries where even though are a huge work forcé like they're in the US still are Not welcomed and get bad treatment from it's citizens and goverment.

NorCalBrah916 Why don't the Chinese ever tend to assimilate to the "host" country they
enter as immigrants? But if a Mexican (or a group of Mexicans) or any
other nationality were to establish their own communities (with their
own traditions and beliefs) somewhere in China, odds are that
surrounding Chinese communities would not like it and would possibly
even stop them. Sounds like a double-standard on the part of the Chinese
      to me...
If you like to retain Chinese culture so much, why didn't you stay over
      there then?

Asians integrate well, in America they get American names like John or Bob, speak English and help out the community. In Mexico they will have Mexican sounding names, speak Spanish and will be Mexican influenced. If a Mexican or any other ethnic were to go to Asia and open up their own restaurant or community or whatever they would have no problem with it as long as you speak the language and are friendly. In Thailand and Japan there are many diff type of non Asian ethnics that have moved there with no issue.

The Chinese and Spaniards were known to have intermarriages in the Philippines. They're known as Sangleys. 330 years of Spanish rule probably took some Chinese to Mexico during the Manila to Acapulco trade. Chinese had been residing in the Philippines in the 17th century. That's the only way they had contacts with the Mexicans. Some Mexicans were also made their way to the Philippines via the trade govern by Spain. Chinese had been part of the Philippine culture. So as Japanese. The point of trade between Mexico ( Nueva Espana) and Philippines is the only possible route of Chinese into Mexico. The Malays, Chinese, Indonesians, Japanese, Spaniards, Mexicans, Hindus from India , Polynesians, and Arabs were at one point present in the Philippines. Tagalog our main language have loan words from everyone. Such a rich history.

There is a misconception about 'White America' because each state is different. States like Mississippi, Louisiana or Florida have more blacks and browns than whites. In fact. the majority of people in places like miami in southern florida, are black and brown, most of them immigrants from central america, cuba, haiti or southamerica, and they barely speak English. Only the retired elders from Canada speak English and are white. So not all states in the states are white or have a white majority. Asians are mostly in the west coast, California, Hawaii or Washington state which are pretty much diverse states unlike the states in the east side that look more brown and black.

      @ekbalam7077 Před 10 lety +8

Archie Richard Part of the problem are the U.S gov classifications because they consider "white" to be a label to classify people opposed to other labels or groups, such as African-Americans" which is a label for blacks. I don't see people labeling themselves as "European-Americans". Or the label "Hispanic" which embraces Latino cultures and Spanish Speaking people of all colors and flavors. I don't see people labeling themselves as "Anglos". The Caucasus in central asia, is technically, part of Asia, but I don't see the government classifying them as "Asians". LOL So, if we have " white " as a label or group, then we should have similar labels like Brown, black, yellow, red, tan, pink, etc... I think the U.S gov has an obsession to portray itself as a white country and create minorities and majorities according to political interests. This trauma of trying to be white also affects Hispanic people and comes from colonial times when Indians were fighting cowboys and the pale brits started labeling people according to color of skin. In my opinion, the Untied States is a mestizo country which means everybody is and has been mixed for generations. The classifications made by the census and other gov branches need comprehensive reforms , as well.

Well I'm Mexican and proud of it but I know I have Chinese blood in my lineage not too far actually. My mothers side is Mestizo (Yaqui, Spanish) with some Lebanese blood. My fathers side is Mestizo (Yaqui, Spanish) with some Chinese blood. Sooo I do have dark under eye patches, Spanish nose, freckles and pale/white skin with jet black hair and small light brown eyes. Both my parents are light skinned as well. We are Sonoran Mexican. No we're not Amerindian, No we're not Spanish. We are simply Mexican and proud. There should be no shame in being Mexican. Whether you look Asian, White etc. But you're Mexican...you should always be proud of your heritage. Don't give me the "Mexican is not a race, it's a nationality" BULLCRAP! I'm not buying it.

I've only come to realized that the trenches were dug by the Chinese during WW1, but there were never any mentioning of that until an old box containing photographic evidence was discovered recently! Also, the most difficult/harshest stretches of the earliest American railways were also built by Chinese workers. The Chinese had contributed so much in the past but they got deliberately forgotten into the mist of time!

Mexico has treated its Chinese people terribly in the past. I've seen heavy Anti-Chinese sentiment even in present day America (U.S.) and now it's even worse with CO-VID and all that. I'm Xicano but my early roots are mainly in the African peoples (Afro-Mexican) and Asian peoples that came to the Americas. Amongst my Asian roots, I have Chinese blood. I hope that the Chinese culture stays strong and alive in Mexico. We always need to remember where we came from and treat each other humanely regardless of race or ethnicity.

Luis Cortez Why don't the Chinese ever tend to assimilate to the "host" country they
enter as immigrants? But if a Mexican (or a group of Mexicans) or any
other nationality were to establish their own communities (with their
own traditions and beliefs) somewhere in China, odds are that
surrounding Chinese communities would not like it and would possibly
even stop them. Sounds like a double-standard on the part of the Chinese
      to me...
If you like to retain Chinese culture so much, why didn't you stay over
      there then?
