- Grainy audition tapes from 1986 - never been seen before by the public - show Keanu Reeves joking and roughhousing with Alex Winter. Winter would eventually be cast as his costar, Bill S. Preston Esq and Reeves would play Ted Theodore Logan. 'Keanu, from the beginning it was clear that this guy was head and shoulders above the rest,' a source who was on the set told DailyMail.com. 'Alex and Keanu kind of picked each other, they found each other in the big waiting room on day one and they started hanging out together,' they said. The metalhead slacker friends have now reunited for the third installment of the time-travel comedy franchise in Bill & Ted Face the Music. The latest film will hit theaters and streaming platforms on September 1.

I believe the original TMNT voice cast got similarly shifted around during the audition process. It's been known to happen. Trying different things to see what works.

To be fair Keanu was working on a few movies Alex had probably just finished up Squeal which he co-wrote and co-directed and co-produced.

Keanu Reeves doing the "You killed Ted, you medieval DICKWEED!!" part is fantastic. Coincidentally, that's my favorite line from the movie.

At the time Keanu had been working on a few movies, so maybe not the time to invest. They are both great together, no wonder they are still friends after all these decades.
This was just them in the waiting room before they went in for the audition.
From what I have heard they met in the waiting room and just did this the whole time. They were originally supposed to be in one at a time, but the chemistry made the casting directors bring them in together.
This is AWESOME!!!!! Alex is playing Ted! Look at the natural chemistry Keanu has with Alex!
The timing at 0:35 they say it at the exact same time.
Pretty amazing considering they just met at these auditions.
But then Keanu has natural chemistry with everyone.He is awesome that way.
They were obviously having a blast...casting directors laughing their butts off too...that was hilarious😆

The chemistry was definitely there from the start though. They seemed like old friends rather than two dudes who most likely just met.
TheKennethECarper they actually did an interview about Bill and Ted 3 and both Keanu and Alex said they really bonded over the movies and would often hang out between shoots
@@asiancajun0438 I thought they was friends before the movie? I heard a story, that one of writers was in a queue and them two was in front of him. He thought that these guys would be right for the part.

The writers weren't involved in casting and had arrived in Arizona for filming and were stressing about the possibility casting got it wrong. They were in line at McDonald's and saw two people goofing off and said "Now, *those* guys should be Bill and Ted!" As it turns out, it was Alex and Keanu, who had already been cast and were also in Arizona for filming.
Love that they're playing the opposite parts. "Let's go talk to ourselves!" Lol

This clip only proves the most important aspect of making a film is casting. They definitely cast the two right actors!
Especially since they both were mostly total unknowns at the time.
They didn't even alter much about the performances (except who played which character)

This is terrific. One of the best audition tapes I've ever seen. Their chemistry was off the charts from the beginning, and they sold almost every line reading.

I agree. Keanu works better as the more dense one that’s nice. He seems more of a jerk playing Bill, for some reason.
I would have hired them based on this. They never broke character even as they were reading the lines and then quickly remembered those lines to look away from.
Even when they switch the roles it still worked perfectly. Didn't even notice until half way in

I'm almost positive the new movie will suck big time... But I'll still love it and still pay all the money just for the nostalgia.... I have a love hate relationship with Hollywood

They had Alex stand on a box next to Keanu in the old movies. He refused to do it for FTM bc he wanted the characters to have differences.

@@ComdrStew no. Instead fir most of it he was standing in front of Keanu reeves rather than directly to his side, and he still looks 2 - 4 inches shorter than Reeves throughout most the film. Yes people's height does change over the years but Keanu Reeves is 6 foot 1 and Alex Winter is 5 foot seven. That height difference isn't a result of age.
In ‘86, Keanu would’ve been 21/22. It’s possible he could’ve grown another inch or two.

That bit where Ted thinks Bill's talking about the Scarecrow rather than the Tinman, that almost seems out of character, they didn't get things wrong like that in the in the final movie. It's always interesting to see how characters evolve in the process.
