Sadly this song is a lot more tragic. It's a relationship that's gone and I suspect the love interest might be dead when she says "Waiting for the call from beyond". It's a love letter to someone that can't read it.
It is indeed very tragic. Natalie said that this was about a friend that killed himself. I learned this after seeing her live, but the first time I heard the song when the album came out it immediately transported me to an old time movie scene. :)
I love the juxtaposition between the scenes and the subject matter of the song. We know one half of those pairs are going to be seperated by death and they don't.
