When I saw that the creators of Detention were making this game I was raising my eyebrow like “really?” and then the scene at peach blossom village happened and I was like “ah.”
I started playing this game without knowing much and even after dealing with this boss, it never crossed my mind that "Horror Game Developers Made This Game". I realised this only when I saw the title and double checking the steam. I also realised that there are other signs of that in other parts of the game but here is the most clear signs.

You forgot to show balloon enemies that turn into heads, also autoturrets that made of brain instead of lotus. eyes looked terrifying even in dream form. also boss background with her head, there were a lot of details.

Trivia: there was an interview and Red Candle said the whole process of making lady Ethereal part was so smooth (including the gameplay, art, bgm, etc.), while there might be so many discussions and editing when making other parts They’re really good at making horror games 😂😂
Just some spoilers: So the people in the background were the victims of her attempt at making a virtual reality, everything was going perfectly, however, it was too perfect, as the test subjects (the people behind her) went insane after going into the virtual reality since it was built so well they couldn’t differentiate it from reality, I think then ended up all committing suicide, hence the guilt and madness, since she blames their death on herself.

Stuff like when you first enter the Soulscape, the flower ring and the flower tower are both typical funeral decoration. And also the creepy photo in the Soulscape (it appears at the check point inside Soulscape platforming when you are covered with black background) Additionally, the dome shape structure for every Sol store their seal (including Yi), is also inspired from the traditional tomb structure.
The background change in Lady Ethereal's area is straight out of Monster Party. Old NES game that would also do this to you, start out in a happy and nice area that then slowly turns bloody and creepy. Not even a creepypasta thing, just one of the ways in which the game would scare you.
This is what I need more of, horror elements in kid friendly games (and non horror games in general) I always have the assumption that something scary is going to happen, no matter what game I play
I like to argue that horror elements are not kid friendly for kid friendly games There are people crazy enough to blame games with guns, there's more than enough to try to sue you for that

this is probably the creepiest event. The rest of the game is focusing on other stuff. It is very dialogue heavy, but I didn't mind it too much. The most of the characters are all driven by a well set motivation. Most of them you'll walk away from with consideration for what they were trying to be. The game is difficult, but after I understood patterns, some bosses I thought were really hard suddenly became easy. Getting the game's later abilities down gives you crazy advantages.
For a game that has cute animal like animation they have cannibalism, torture, gore and some really messed up lore. The protagonist himself Yi can be as vicious as his enemy.
Honestly, everytime I see that back eyes bloody tears and blood blood blood everywhere, I can't help but think of oneyplahs sonic.exe jokes cause it's so overdone nowadays that it ends up feeling silly and whacky.
