A History Matters Evening with Jan Gross
An evening with Jan Gross, Emeritus Professor of History at Princeton University; interviewed by Jonathan Brent, Executive Director of YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Structure: 45 minutes to an hour of interview, followed by general Q & A.

Stalin used so many Jews in the Ministry of Public Security (Poland) because so many Jews had been loyal Communists for so long. In addition, Stalin probably reckoned that Polish Jews would have no trace of loyalty to Poland, while Polish gentile Communists may still have some. (The latter was eventually borne out in a sense, for example, by Wladyslaw Gomulka’s “nationalist deviation”.) Examples of Jewish Communists that later became part of the elite: Leon Andrzejewski, Zygmunt Braude, Mieczyslaw Broniatowski, Julia Brystiger, Jozef Czaplicki, Anatol Fejgin, Marek Fink, Leon Gangel, Marian Jurkowski, Edward Kalecki, Julian Konar, Jozef Kratko, Mieczyslaw Mietkowski, Zygmunt Okret, Henryk Piasecki, Ludwik Przysuski, Roman Romkowski, Jozef Rozanski, Leon Rubinsztein, Jozef Swiatlo, and Michal Taboryski.
Of course, many Jewish Communists had changed their names to Polish ones. The best-known Jewish officer in the Bezpieka was Jozef Swiatlo (Izaak Flieschfarb) because of his defection to the west in December 1953.
Many of the Communist concentration camps and prisons, in subjugated Poland, were administered by Jews. The best known of the Jewish wardens was Salomon (Shlomo) Morel. He was director of the camps at Swietochlowice-Zgodza (1945) and Jaworzno (1949-1951). He also was the commandant of the prisons, for example, in Opole (1945-1946), Katowice (1946-1948) and Ilawa (1951-1953). In time, he became a symbol of Communist crimes and the Poles’ inability to bring the criminals to justice. (After the fall of Communism in Poland, Morel, reacting to publicity about his crimes, was one of several Jewish functionaries who fled Poland. Israel welcomed him and protected him. (So much for the myth that Jewish Communists are not really Jews). Despite Polish requests, Israel refused to extradite him, claiming such considerations as his illness and advanced age. However, Israel had no problem supporting the extradition and prosecution of ill and aging Nazis).
Pointedly, Morel was just the tip of the iceberg. Other examples of high-level Jewish functionaries in charge of Communist prisons and concentration campsare: Mieczyslaw (Moszek, Moishe) Flaum - leader of the camp at Milecinie near Wloclawek (1945-1946); Beniamin (Benjamin) Glatter - in charge of the prison at Goleniow (1949 r.); Franciszek (Efraim) Klitenik-director of a number of prisons in Wroclaw (1946-1947), Dzierzoniow (1947-1951), and Lodz (1951-1958); Sewer [Sever] Rozen - the head of a number of prisons in Wielun (1947) and Barczew (1947-1951); Oskar Rozenberg - director of the prison at Potulice (1951-1953); Kazimierz Szymanowicz - leader of the prison at Rawicz (1945-1947); and Saul Wajntraub [Weintraub]-director of the prisons at Klodzko (1948-1951) and Warsaw (1951-1954).
If not for Poles saving you from Germans and certain death you would not be here.

Wolfgang Birkner and his SS Einsatzkommando was responsible for the organised action in Jedwabne. There are German(!) documents confirming this. Part of the plan, (one of the many like this in the region), was to design a covert operation which would indict the local population. Local population wasn't even 100% Polish in the region at that time. It's possible for example, there were some volksdeutsche among the cooperants. Gross' thesis doesn't hold water at all. I'd encourage the readers not to take anything they read at the face value. What I wrote can be verified-do your own research as with anything else.

What president Kwaśniewski said was his personal opinion and not a fact.
Kwaśniewski said that Poland was responsible for Jedwabne Pogrom. It was later revoked by the current Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Professor Gross is speaking from the far left. His point of view is a militant one. It is utterly biased and should be treated as such. His discourse supports and actively defends the polish post-communist establishment. At the end of the day his statements just stir up potential antisemitism in the eyes of people who associate him with the jewish community. The jewish community should distance itself from such extremists for the sake of healthy polish-jewish relations. Otherwise, antisemitism will again make a strong case about "judeo-communism". One would not ask Mr Bernie Sanders to objectively assess the presidency of Mr Trump so don't expect Mr Gross to be able to assess the PiS government. Mr Gross and consorts are the deeper source of antisemitic sentiment in Poland. I know this because here in France I can see right wing jewish writers such as Mr William Goldnagel defending polish identity and good name. But obviously Mr Goldnagel would not quote the super-neo-marxist newspaper "Gazeta Wyborcza" as if it were a normal newspaper. Mr Gross collaborates with cultural marxists but fails (or pretends) to understand the negative fallout of such far left propaganda work in a country struggling for de-communisation. Who can be fooled?
