    BTS slayed the whole performance. Kudos to everyone for a job well done. JK and Hobi literally just finished their quarantine and Jin still has his cast and the other four members practiced religiously with no assurance of performing as OT7 but the universe really aligned in their favor. • @robwebnoid5763
    @robwebnoid5763 Před 2 lety +23

    One of BTS' flex (or KPop flex in general) for western audiences is the choreo. But not just "choreo", but "heavy complex choreo". There are no organized dancing in today's western recording artists/musicians, simply because music is an audio-based subject, so video/visuals has not really been a factor if you're only listening to music. KPop, on the other hand, really started with television, 3 decades ago, so you had to incorporate visuals/video, thus "dance" was one way of doing that. We did use to have choreo, mostly because of music videos, such as with MTV, or before that with music show TV specials. Michael Jackson was one of those artists who helped pave the way with including dance in songs for the modern age. Broadway musicals also helped & they still do that today, but they are considered a separate artistry, with their own award shows, so you're not going to see them here on the Grammys that much. If anything, the only people who do heavy choreo on these types of awards show are the background dancers. The closest artists today that might have any sort of choreo could be Bruno Mars, idk. And even in the days of white english-speaking boybands, such as NKotB, NSync, BackstreetBoys, 1D, etc., their dancing was simple or just disorganized vibing. And even decades back with the doowop/acappella male groups such as Four Seasons, Temptations, etc, all of their dancing was simple & they usually stayed dancing around their microphone stands. Of course, lightweight wireless headsets hadn't been invented yet. Because of their reach & popularity into the global market, BTS might help pave the way for western artists to start incorporating dance again. You could say that it might be a "revival", even if there wasn't that much heavy choreo to begin with 25 through 50 years ago. In a way, BTS might be creating a precedent. If that is the case, don't be surprised to see western musicians dancing heavily (and organized) in the near (or far) future & that historians will have to be reminded that it was BTS who was the primary influencer for that domino effect to happen, for the basic reason that choreo can potentially attract more viewership (fans) to that artist doing dance, just it has been proven for BTS in their 9 years in the biz thus far.

    First of all, BTS slayed that performance. Even with Jin off to the side, and Hobi's slight stumble, they were so impressive. Considering that J-Hope was in Korea till the day before, JK was quarantined till the day before, and Jin was injured - they could have easily played it safe. But, they were professional and went out there and did their thing. So much respect for them.
    Secondly, that performance must have left an impression - because the amount of hate they got afterward was otherwise totally unprovoked. Between the whole Joe Budden thing PLUS the comments that producer Mike Dean made online, they were being disrespected for literally no reason. If someone doesn't like their music, fine. Everyone has their own tastes. But, the kind of hate they get, is frankly just thinly veiled xenophobia. People getting mad that a non-Western group is so good and so loved.
    Lastly, I hope you guys saw what RM said at Day 1 of their Vegas concerts. He indirectly addressed the Grammys and all the online hate. I won't try to paraphrase, but definitely look it up. Again, just so much respect to him and all the guys for always rising above the hate. They have had to deal with this type of crap for years. But, they have their heads on straight and their priorities clear.

    Idk if I have this right but I feel that the term cultural appropriation is thrown around these days when in fact it is not so. Koreans and others have adopted hip hop music, yes but they have not claimed it as theirs or have disrespected or try to exploit it. BTS in particular have always acknowledged the greats in hip hop and have said they have been their inspiration, they look up to them and want to learn from them. My main issue with what Joe Budden said was just how it was said. No problem if he hates their music and don't want to see them, that's cool. It's just his choice of words were so disrespectful. How much more aggressive the world would be if everybody expressed themselves like that. Spread a little positivity sometimes. Isn't that what music is about?

      Cultural Appropriation can be thrown around loosely. But its true that in the KPOP industry they never give credit when its due to black culture. KPOP in the early years was all based off of black culture no doubt. And there was no credit given to black people. Now in 3 and 4th generation, it's not so much like 1st and 2nd gen because they have more concepts to do and company's are starting to bring a new light to KPOP moving away from situations with CA since time is changing and cancel culture is quick. This doesn't take away that the root of KPOP was Black culture and it was Cultural Appropriation because groups were doing black hair styles, and basing their whole image off of Black culture.

    • @nuhkyah23
      @nuhkyah23 Před 2 lety

      @@namjinseokeats Ah I see, but what I understand from the definition of CA is that elements are adapted but it is not in a disrespectful, exploitative or stereotypical or mocking manner. I'm not really sure that's the case here. But I feel that once an element of a group is adopted it is quickly viewed as CA, for instance Adele rocking cornrows going to a festival. I don't view that as CA but people were on her ass pretty bad about it.
      I could be wrong but I think because Kpop is out in the media now and not just limited to Korea or Asia they are able to say that their inspirations were this artist and that artist but in the earlier days it was localized. What are your thoughts?

    Lo hit the nail on the head with the joe budden thing, I was thinking very similarly in terms of some black people talking about others stealing our culture yet they themselves aren't doing anything about it except complain, AND, if we're talking old school R&B and hip hop, who out of these "lil" trap mumble rappers in america is influenced by the greats or trying to keep the golden age sound alive? I can't name one. So if his problem really is just the fact that BTS is asian and has been influenced by classic black music and actually give credit to those artists but doesn't have a problem with some in this generation of american rappers having no creativity or musical knowledge, he can jump in a damn lake.

Her surname is Spanish due to Spaniard colonialism for a few centuries in the Philippines. She could still have a tiny bit of Spanish bloodline, who knows. All people who don't like BTS have to do is say it like this. "BTS isn't the music I like to listen to but I see how hard they work and how talented they are and if you like their music that's cool, and I wish them the best." Is that so hard for some people to say.

    As for Joe Budden, I haven’t heard his name until this recent hate comment about BTS. I think he’s really a lonely guy. I pity him because he’s hiding his real problem by hating people or bts in particular, so he really needs help, i think💜

    The guy on the left hit the nail on the head:

    (2) The "Korean" aspect is all there's left.
    JB's real beef is with something else.

BTS and the grammys have been a difficult topic due to all the mixed feelings but the positive of all these is that they enjoyed his time there and were able to show a small taste of the incredible talent they have. About Mr. Budden opinion i dont know who he is, he´s another hater just because, every word that he said in that podcast was just disrespectful with Korean people and culture, personally i will not give him the power to get my atenttion cuz i believed he wants Army´s attention to be on the spotlight once again, pure publicity move. I am just so happy they finally got to perform on Grammy, and as ot7! 💜 I am so sure all Armys were worried because of Jungkook and Hobi's conditions and also Jin's. But they have pulled it off, knowing that they've got a little time to rehearse.. 🙌

    This performance by BTS was absolutely incredible and I'm so proud of them💜💜 I watched the whole Joe Budden segment on his podcast and I could tell he was itching to say what he said about BTS, like he couldn't wait to hate on them and when his co-hosts asked him to give reasons he didn't have any which to me just proves he wanted attention. I don't even think he really hates BTS. I think Joe wanted to be controversial again and he got what he wanted. He was extremely disrespectful and unnecessary.
