  • Astro Teller, director of Alphabet's moonshot factory, X, describes how smart bets on world-changing innovations are aided by a culture that celebrates only the most audacious projects and rewards teams for showing the courage to find the biggest flaws. Great talk. However, how sure are we that these practices (awards for failing etc...) actually achieve their desired goal? Is there a science of organisational culture, that measures the effectiveness of management techniques?
Did Astro test/falsify his ideas related to cultural engineering? Is it really possible to do 'controlled' experiments in this manner? Is there such a thing as evidence-based management/culture engineering?
    Anyone got any answers??

Astro Teller comes from a family of competent scientists and engineers. There is content on the web demonstrating that Google performs double-blind studies and often use their employees as subjects in social/HR experiments.
This technique is not new, only perhaps newly applied in industry. One part of "child's play" or competitive practice is to experience and that often involves less controlled experiments and taking failure in good humor. The essence of an innovation culture is that "practice makes perfect" ie by practicing, everyone participating has an opportunity learn and grow. Some individuals may decide to not benefit from the opportunity. The essence of learning must come from within, then most anything is possible. The values of this innovative culture work for a party of one as well as for a group.
