This is going to fix your red ring of death, all you need is a T9 screwdriver, electrical tape, silicone base thermal paste, and 4 sets of 2 pennies (8 all together if your not good at math).
This has worked on my friend's xbox for a 2 years and a half now, and mine worked for about a year.
If you want more info, send me a message or video response this video.
*Update*
Yes, you can still use live when you are done, no it will not ban your account. Just make sure you have everything plugged in and try using the xbox without live first to make sure everything is perfect. Then you can plug in live and your xbox is set.
Update**** Im so glad a lot of people have found my video helpful. I have gotten about 50 comments/messages saying that you guys have fixed your xbox. Glad to hear you guys are doing great :)
*UPDATE*
A lot of people are having similar problems. let me tell you how to fix them.
Q: Do I have to use thermal paste?
A: YES, if you don't the bonding will melt and destroy your system.

Q:I have 2 red lights, what do I do now?
A:2 read lights means overheating. Have you tried the towel trick yet? if so, check the pennies, make sure they are on properly.
_______________________________________
Q: Why Pennies???
A: Pennies contain copper, a mineral that is very conductive of heat. Being conductive of heat, it will absorb the heat your xbox is putting out and keep it there instead of the chips.

Q: Can you fix my xbox for me?
A: NO I will not give out my information to you just to fix your xbox. it's really simple if you follow directions.
________________________________________
Q. The fans stop working and it displays 2 red lights
A. check the penny wrappings for holes
________________________________________
Q: What are all the error codes?
A: Go to this website, it will give you all error codes and how you can possibly fix them.
www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/...
______________________________________
Q: it works for about 1 minute then just turns to 2 rings. also the fans make a really loud noise.
A: Check the pennies. Make sure they are sticking and make sure you don't have any holes in the electrical tape.

Other than that, seems that everyone is doing great. More than 200 comments and messages!
**UPDATE**
Disclaimer: This trick may not fix ALL rrod. If this does not work for you, try the x-clamp swap out. You can find it on youtube. I am not responsible if you break your own xbox like a n00b. One person who tried to fix their xbox with my trick broke something while doing the trick. They said they were going to sue me. What idiots. Anywho more than 250 comments and messages. And yes, the xboxs I have fixed are still working.
*Update* 2/9/09
YES! the xbox is still working. NO! I will not fix it for you.
anywho over 1000 people have fixed their xbox's from my video :) Thanks for all the confirmation comments and thanks for trying it. I am glad I could help.
**Update 9/11/09
Yes, our xbox is still working. Thank you for all the comments and messages however I may not get to your specific comment or message. I am sorry in advance. I am very glad so many people have fixed their xbox's with my trick.
Update 10/4/09

Wow, 1 MILLION views. Thanks guys, that made my day. :) - Jak na to + styl
Very nostalgic this video. He keeps saying Radio Shack.
Literally the thing i thought when i saw this.
This actually worked on my old xbox 360 that i took apart in 2010. thanks guys.
We have had our broken Xbox in the closet for almost two years. I was just about to buy a new one when I decided to look up how to fix it. THANK YOU. I had to use the towel trick afterwords after the intensive Xbox surgery, and it is now running perfectly. EXCELLENT VIDEO!
This immediately fixed my XBox 360. I was skeptical at first, but you nailed it on the head. Didn't even have to do the towel thing. Now my 2-year-dead xbox lives again! Kudos.
I remember I watched this video in 2008 and followed the steps very carefully. I messed up and didn’t do a towel trick at the end, so the Xbox only worked for 30min after I put it back together.. sad day, but I was able to get the elite when they went on sale right after that
I put bubble gum to hold my pennies
HA Nice
He said thermal past
we tried everything in the book even took it to a guy to fix he said it was not possible. We found you just today and it fixed our problem! THANK U
Seeing as this video has close to 3 million views with minimal dislikes, I considered it the most trustworthy. I went out, bought the few items necessary, and did what this video said. I also took the cpu heat sink and graphics heat sink off, and freshened up the thermal paste on those as well. I then did the TOWEL TRICK (very important step), and let it cool off. I tried tuning back on, and IT WORKED!!! I just did it today, so who knows how long the fix will last... Great Video!!!
BAD RELIGION! one of my favorite bands of all time. lol, the other RRoD video i just watched hosted The Decilne by NOFX.
It didnt work. Now when i turn on my xbox my fan run for bout 5 secs.den cuts off with 2 red lights can sumbody plz help me with this problem
reflow your xbox
you didn't put all your screws back in
This is perfect, big shoutout to these guys for this amazing video. Thanks for saving my Xbox Arcade.
This trick worked for me. Great video!
Did he REALLY just call the thermal paste "Heatsink"?
He said "Heatsink Compound", which is perfectly valid.
Its valid with thermal paste ?
#screwholes
You're video just saved another one. Console works Live works perfect ... Thank-you!
This works! I did this yesterday and did everything very carefully. And now my Xbox runs without problems!! Thanx a lot!
Don't do this. This is no proper method to fix your broken xbox. USing this method might break your xbox beyond repair. If you want to repair your Xbox do a proper reflow and replace the xclamps but don't use this penny technique.
Just did this and my Xbox is working. Very pleased.
best custom paint job i have EVER seen!
Worked well. Worth the effort!
Fixed mine right up with help from your video!! Much thanks!!!
Just did it and it worked. Great vid.
Great video. I just did this and it fixed mine. I didn't even have to do the towel trick afterwards, it worked fine.
Finished a couple hours ago, works like a charm. Thanks a lot dudes!!!
Great vid guys, followed the instructions as stated, and it worked like a charm. Thanks so much!
Just tried this method today. Worked Great! Thanks again.
Hey guys I would just like to take an opportunity to thank you for showing me this trick. My X-Box got the RRoD 2 years ago and thought it was a lost cause. Then I did the penny trick exactly like you showed in the video and my X-Box has been working like brand new again. Thank you so much for this video, it helped a lot.
Thanks. Seems to be working so far. Good tip!
Just a quick thank you. This worked on my Elite Falcon, I had been running strong for 4 years and RRODeathed last night. Took longer to get the damn case open than to fix the problem.
I had the dreaded Error 0020 RRoD a few months ago and I shelved the XBOX after normal tricks didn't work. I eventually decided to open up my XBOX and replace the thermal paste on my GPU and CPU and "Cook" it for a while to see if it helps. That didn't solve the problem. I stumbled upon this video so I decided to try the Penny Trick. First thing I'm going to mention is that my XBOX had 0 (ZERO) heat dissipating material (even that gooey stuff in your video) on top of the memory chips. Granted my XBOX is very old, I found it quite amusing that Microsoft went to great lengths to skimp on costs that ended up costing them over a billion dollars in repairs. Anyway, I went ahead and did the Penny trick and "Cooked" my XBOX in a towel for 25 minutes, left it to cool for another 15 and sure enough, it's working again. Thank you for the instructions, you gave my XBOX another breath of life, even if it's for a short while.
Did this to an xbox i bought for 15 bucks with the red ring and now it works. Thanks a lot, great vid
just did it and it works like it was brand new, thanks guy
It worked wonderful so far. When I first turned it on the RROD came on then I turned it off and back on again and it has been working ever since. Thank you.
Thank you very much this worked for me. Very satisfied!!
worked fine for me! thanks dude!
I used this video years ago to fix my old Xbox and it's still around now wow, helping mankind 👍
Are you being 4 real? Thinking of trying it on my old xbox, its cool if you joking but let me know if it really works plz.
@@hug00l yh I'm serious I did it years ago to my old Xbox and I don't have my old Xbox now upgraded to the new one year backs.
you are amazing. this worked for me today. thanks!
Did this yesterday, and it worked perfectly! I admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but I didn't have anything to lose by trying it... and I'm glad I was surprised by a working 360.
Just did it today and so far so good I'm still amazed on how easy it was no joke.. Thanks man
Thsnks for makeing this vid help alot my xbox works now!!!!
THANK YOU. the first time i did it it turned on for a second, then blinked 2 lights. Re-applied the pennies (WAY easier the second time through) and it works like a charm! thank you so much!
i freaking love you!!! it actually worked!
worked like a charm, thank you!
My Xbox went kaput on me and the warranty expired about a decade ago so I figured I'd give this a shot. The first time around it didn't work; I did the towel trick and everything. For round two I ended up putting a pretty big smudge of paste on the chips to seat my newly wrapped pre-1982 pennies (95% copper as a pose to 97.5% zinc of post-1982) which I only did once around on either side. Also, I didn't do the towel trick and everything turned out awesome! Thanks so much to the poster!!
Ahh.. This looks easy enough. Thank you very much.
Thanks, I also replaced the thermal compound under the heat conductors first it only worked for about ten mins. Now that I've put the two pennies on back, did the heat trick and restarted it's working great. Been playing on and off today for a few hours! Most I've gotten it to work sense rrod!
did this 1.5 years ago...xbox still working. cheers (:
Worked for me. Thanks!!!
darn it! It works! I thought this was a joke but my xbox is live again now!!! Thanks a bunch!
It works. It really works!!!!!! Thanks so much.

thanks guys :) worked a treat thank you for your help :)
thought this was total bs...amazingly it worked! thanks alot!!!
Dude this fixed both my xboxs thx a lot to all the people who doubt this trick it really does work try it, but when you wrap the pennies in electrical tape double it and then turn the penny and wrap around once
i did this like a year ago and after countless hours of gaming, my xbox now runs perfect :)

thanks, fixed my issues easily.
I am gonna try this tomorrow. Everything you did make sense. I will be sure to let you know how it goes. If it works then I will put upa video and make surei give you props for it. Thanks in advance

This video helped me fix and sell so many 360s good times
I FIXED IT :D THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
YOU ARE A HARDWARE GOD !!!V IT REALY DID WORK !!!
Thanks it worked for me guys bought a RROD xbox 360 off craigslist for $20 $5 for the thermal paste and it running like a charm
Finally, after hours of taking it apart, trip to best buy for thermal paste, trip to walmart for t9 screwdriver, my old xbox is now free of RROD. This xbox was so old it has the original dashboard to it, lol. Way to bring this mummy back from the dead. Thanks Guys!!!
thankk you so much works perfectly fine after this
Great video thank you and may i suggest using a qtip or a popsicle stick for application in the future! lol
I can report that this works. THanks man!!!
worked like a charm after i finally got the pennies to stick!
This has turned my Xbox into the most expensive Piggy Bank I've ever had, but with the least amount of actual money in it. Thanks
thanks man
actually worked! thx man!!! XD
THANK U !!!!!!!! I FIXED IT , THANK U!
AHHHHHHHHHHHH YAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE FREAKING SUPER MAN!!!!!!!!! IT WORKED FOR ME....I...I WANNA GIVE YOU A MAN HUG...........THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Thank you very much. Now I can get back to making videos
The og xbox 360 revival vid lol. I remembered i wanted to attempt this when i was younger because i had the rrod come on once but i just shut it off and it never came back on again. Had mine for 15 years and is still going strong.
Great video. With all the money and engineers Microsoft has, you'd think they wouldn't be so ignorant about building their system.
@skulltac I fixed it myself. I just took it all apart again and removed the 3 penny stacks and reduced them to 2 penny stacks with less tape. I put on such a miniscule amount of glue that it seems to work fine now. The only thing is that the fan is quite loud.
Great guide, though. Useful to know all that stuff when disassembling!
Nice video. I got the red ring of death on my old Xbox but after waiting one year I got the slim.
Thank u it worked for me didn't do the towel trick either but thanks
I FIXED MY XBOX! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I DIDNT EVEN NEED TO USE THE TOWELL TRICK! follow directions and believe!
This works, I suggestion don't screw in the black screws in the x-clamps that tight because it will not work and yes your fan is louder I did this about 1.5 years ago. This really works I went overload and put in 3 pennies in each chip.
Another thing, if you want something a bit better than pennies you can get those mini heat sinks for RAM pretty cheap from online stores, not the heat spreaders but the ones that go on individual chips.
I also used the penny trick to fix an overheating router a while back :)
This Definitely works one thing youll need to do is once you reassemble your Xbox put the av switch back in turn it on and it should be normal, if not unplug then plug back in the av switch.
My xbox isn't broken yet, but if it does. I know how to do it now! Awesome!
Yeah... I had the red ring and instead, I just got a aluminum foil, made a square, got electric tape to wrap the aluminum foil and then got the heat paste that I bought from Frys electronic store, maybe you can buy one from Newegg. And then I just put the heat paste on the chips, (I used quite a lot. Like half more than this video.) and then I just put it on. I've done this process about 2 months ago... it works great!
my friend turned on his xbox 1 day and suddenly got the 4 rings of death. All of his friends got it and got ps3 and stuff and were really guttered. He just took everything apart, blew all the dust of it then put it back together and it worked, it still works 2 years later. :D
At first this made my xbox 2 ring on startup so I re-did all the steps and now it works like new
it worked for me thanks
Thanks it works
U helped me out mkay
Worked perfect for me my xbox lasted 2 years with pennies inside :)
WORKS EVERY TIME :)
work here thanks a lot
It all makes sense now!
I've had my Xbox 360 since 2009, and I've never got the RROD, and I play for such a long time sometimes, the longest I've played for was 14 hours in the Summer Holiday when I first got my GTA IV mods :)
Will I still be able to go play on xbox live without any issues. There was that part in the vid where you mention not to be online once you do everything. Is that just to make sure all the connections particularly the disc drive is attached correctly, or is there any other issues?
Going to try this tomorrow hope it works
I used the gorilla glue instead of thermal paste and I've been playing mine for over 2 months but great video
