Lyrics:
As I was going over the Cork and Kerry mountains
I saw Captain Farrell and his money he was counting
I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier
I said stand and deliver or the devil, he may take you
I took all of his money and it was a pretty penny
I took all of his money, yeah, and I brought it home to Molly
She swore that she would love me, no never would she leave me
But the devil take that woman, yeah, for you know she tricked me easy
Musha ring dum a doo dum a da
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o
Being drunk and weary I went to Molly's chamber
Taking money with me but I never knew the danger
For about six or maybe seven in walked Captain Farrell
I jumped up, fired off my pistols and I shot him with both barrels, yeah
Musha ring dum a doo dum a da
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o
Yeah-ah, whiskey in the jar-o
Yeah, yeah, yeah, woah
Yeah, yeah
Now some men like the fishing and some men like the fowling
And some men like to hear, to hear cannon ball a roaring
Me? I like sleeping specially in my Molly's chamber
But here I am in prison, here I am with a ball and chain, yeah
Musha ring dum a doo dum a da, yeah, yeah
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
Whiskey in the jar-o, yeah
Whiskey in the jar-o, yeah
Musha ring dum a doo dum a da
Musha ring dum a doo dum a da
Hey, musha ring dum a doo dum a da
Musha ring dum a doo dum a da, yeah

Who's listening this in 2024, men of culture please raise your hand 🙌
🙌
Me and I love it ❤
Me
Well, I am not a man but I raise my hand anyway!
🙌
As western music is illegal in Iran, in 1998 I smuggled Garage inc album cassette in a loose tea box from Dubai to Shiraz, Iran. I was 20 years old fanatic Metallica fan. Deprived from buying their albums or going to their concerts in my country. I had a Sony Sport Walkman. Used to hide it in my jacket sleeve and hide the headphones under my wooly hat. Walking up and down Cinema Saadi Street, listening to my heros. Two years later I immigrated to the UK and went to 3 live show, including the one that lars missed and joe played the drums.
That's an awesome story. I saw them in Tucson when they had the snake pit, whatever concert that was, and then I saw them in Phoenix. I saw AC/DC when the ban had 1st been lifted from them playing in Tucson. They got a 10 year ban for cracking the ceiling with their cannons. They kicked ass too.
Thank you!! I drink to this today!
When I was 12 I wondered in the woods with a bag of vegetables and before I knew it..Me and samsquantch were having tea sharing memories of bitches and the good ol' days. Since then I put down the shrooms...
As an American under the Biden regime i feel your pain.

R.I.P. to a man with great taste. Rock on brother.
I don’t know the musical term, but one of my favorite parts in this version has always been that guitar echo to the lyrics in the third verse. James sings a line, and then is immediately followed by almost a harmonic response from the guitar. It’s just really nice.
For me the best part is the start when the drums kick in, i get goosebumps everytime

One of the few bands who can rock the shit out of a Thin Lizzy song and actually do it justice. Thank you Metallica and I'm wondering how many folks who had never heard of Thin Lizzy ( criminal right?)came to listen to em when they found out this was a cover? Two truly legendary bands who put their thumbprint on music and have everlasting legacies!!!!!
I think they should have covered one of the original Thin Lizzy songs. Like Angel Of Death for example.

Thin Lizzy's is a cover too. This is a traditional Irish song.
@@7thkansascav468From what I 7nderstood Thin Lizzy had a little trouble getting that momentum until they decided to do their take on this old Irish song. Was it Phil's idea to rework it? Great tune by both Thon Lizzy and Metallica. Cheers bro!

I remember my dad would show me this song when I was younger. I think he told me he wanted me to grow older and play this song. Love you dad! 💗
How the actual f**k has it taken me over 20 years to discover this song? It's not like I've been living in a bloody cave my whole life. I'm genuinely upset. My late teens would have been massively improved by the existence of this god-tier cover. I curse the universe for whatever perverse series of events kept me from hearing it till I was nearly fucking 40!
Don't feel bad, I was 63 before I heard it last year. Not a Metal fan, but this is effing great!
Hahahahaha omg I'm so sorry but that's too funny
I'm fifty three and I just heard it for the first time right now, probably better that I didn't hear it in my teens though the roof would probably have come down it's as good a version as I've ever heard and I heard the dubliners original version and Phil lynette's version and this easely stands with them. God bless America from Ireland don't show him the video though😉
I first heard this song in 1965 (WITJ) Newfoundlander's National Anthem, Metallica does it the best tho.

I started listening to Metallica in 85, and became an instant fan. I saw them live in Denver in 88. everything they make seems to go to the top. great band
Not to change the subject but there was a rumor Metallica were devil worshipers
This is an inspired cover of Thin Lizzie's version of a song that is hundreds of years old. Thin Lizzies version is excellent and Phil's voice is amazing. It has a more Irish feel to it. Kudos to Metallica for re-interpreting their version, including an almost note for note cover of the solo (which is still excellent). Metallica makes it their own as well, turning up the energy and edge to 11. Never get tired of listening to this, and the video is just a celebration of untethered youthful insanity. Glad it's not MY house, though. Great song. Great cover.
Yawn
Last guy says yawn, but I appreciate the comment. I think it's spot on. The cover is fun and the video is a great fit. Also your comment didn't reference any fake dying uncles which automatically gives it an extra 10 points.

Whiskey in the Jar became a hit for Irish Thin Lizzy and has even been covered by Metallica and Grateful Dead. One of the reasons why Metallica’s version of “Whiskey in the Jar” was so successful is that it introduced the song to a whole new generation of fans. Many young people who were not familiar with Thin Lizzy’s music became fans of the song after hearing Metallica’s cover. Metallica’s version also helped to popularize the song
