  • Dimmu Borgir, a symphonic black metal band from Jessheim, Norway, was formed in 1993 by Silenoz and Tjodalv. The band's name, inspired by the volcanic formation Dimmuborgir in Iceland, translates to "dark cities" or "dark fortresses." They quickly expanded their lineup to include vocalist Shagrath, bassist Brynjard Tristan, and keyboardist Stian Aarstad. Their early work, marked by the 1994 EP "Inn i evighetens mørke" ("Into the Darkness of Eternity") and their debut album "For All Tid" ("For All Time"), showcased a distinct style that melded intense black metal with symphonic elements. The album featured guest vocals from prominent figures in the Norwegian black metal scene, emphasizing its deep roots in the genre.
With the 1996 release of "Stormblåst" ("Stormblown"), Dimmu Borgir cemented their reputation. This album, noted for its entirely Norwegian lyrics and sophisticated sound, would be their last to feature such a linguistic focus. Over the years, despite numerous lineup changes, core members Shagrath and Silenoz have remained, with Galder joining as a long-standing lead guitarist. Dimmu Borgir's evolution has seen them become one of the leading names in the symphonic black metal genre, known for their elaborate live performances and complex musical compositions.
