A very enlightening lecture! It makes me see Wilson in a more favorable light. It appears that Trump's agenda brings us back to the isolationism of the 1920's. As you alluded to, this could be a result of our stagnant economy. Good stuff! I thoroughly enjoyed the talk!

Brad Rose - and now a year later how’s it going as Trump blows up a 70 year defense structure. Truman is rolling over in his grave.

      It shouldn’t.
He was a terrible president. Don’t forget his domestic genius got us the federal reserve.

Thomas Jefferson argued that economic dependence between the major nations of the world would make war irrelevant - a theory that decayed during his second term and then rotted completely during Madisons War of 1812......

IN a world that could rise and fall do to the consequences of an ever dwindling cadre of power, I would say you are right...... For better or ill.

incredible... I've often thought Wilson and Obama were similar... their origins in academia and the way they ran their senate/gubernatorial campaigns as essentially national campaigns for the presidency, ascending to that office within 4/2 years

Obama had a very brief "origin" in academia, as a professional rather than a student. He offered a biography as an academic paper at U of Chi's Law School. Hardly an academic contribution! He was a lecturer at the law school in constitutional law. He was also a President who violated not only the Constitution but the Magna Carta. He was an assassin from the Oval Office on Tuesday mornings!

Dear Mr Muiruri, I am a US citizen by birth. I am close to 90 years old. I was born a few months before Franklin D Roosevelt became President of the US. Much change has occurred during my life in my country, and I am not proud of most of them. Yes, we helped Europe to recover after WWII, the sacrifice of our peoples and the horrendous sacrifice of the Chinese and the Russian people. Since then my country has taken the imperial baton from Britain and needlessly provoked wars, engaged in aggression: toppling of legitimate governments, invasions, illegal acts of sanction and blockade, threats and arms races. Not a pretty picture!
Most of my countrymen are "blank", as you wrote, not because they fail to follow Prof Brands. Rather, they are ignorant, because they are victims of the US internal propaganda machine: our news and information media. Even if they followed every one of Brands' lectures and read all his books, they would find little that awakens them to the present nature of our country: a militarized, corporate dominated state seeking world hegemony through force and threat.

Yes, amazing speaker, blah, blah, fans of my comments know I always sing Brands' praises, except when he makes these borderline snide Trump jokes. You're on thin ice, Brands, from only 5 minutes into your talk.

Trump is worthy of being the butt of jokes, considering his presidency was a joke. that’s not to defend other recent presidents like obama bush or clinton. we’ve had shit leaders for the last 70 years
