The young man in the advert was in an old Dr who story called The Ribos Operation, that was during the Tom Baker era. Me and my wife watched it on Britbox. That is what brought me here.
I suffered with a very bad blocked up nose all through the 70s and was never without my Vicks Sinex. I knew the words to this ad off by heart and still do to this day, and I used to recite it at school. Course you can, Malcolm! Happy memories. One of my favourite 70s catchphrases along with: Can you taste it? Oh yes I can!
Lots of things that she was in had her saying memorable lines, "That'll be nice" in You Rang Mlord and "He was an Engine driver you know" in Oh Dr Beeching.
My ex band mate and best friend have called each other Malcolm for 40 years because of this even though neither of us is actually called Malcolm. I still go “oh Mum” a lot too. Classic!
Actress Barbara New here, was married to the mild mannered prison governor in Porridge, actor Michael Barrington. She even appeared in one episode ‘No peace for the wicked’ as an official visiting the prison.
Yes. Also seen in Oh, Doctor Beaching and one episode of Porridge where shes a Home Office visitor who goes into Fletchers cell when he wants some piece
Did I not leave a tweet here? Odd. It has gone. I have been cancelled? Malcolm can and Laura Ingraham can't? Laura in Lindsey Graham. If Lindsey finds out ... Exactly.
Me and my wife still say "course you can, Malcolm!" even though neither of us is called Malcolm. The power of advertising!
Amazing! My wife and I do the same 😄😄😄😄
Just referenced that now...How much influence has this as had...?
Thats completely true
I just said this to someone today 19/4/2022 and looked it up and here I am.🤣

We live in Canada now but I say this often to my grandchildren. Also "Language Timothy" and more.. Loads of great shows and adverts around this time.
I still say this to my grandchildren, and my children say it to them also. 'course you can Malcom..ha,ha. Love it.
I said this to a customer at the shop I work at the other day - Turns out he sat next to Malcolm from this advert when he was at school! :)
Wow, what are the odds!!??
It's one of those ads with legendary status. I love her accent.
As a Malcolm with a runny nose I approve of this ad, and remember it well.
Barbara New should be awarded an honorary posthumous BAFTA for making such a simple line memorable for nearly half a century.
Lots of things that she was in had her saying memorable lines, "That'll be nice" in You Rang Mlord and "He was an Engine driver you know" in Oh Dr Beeching.
Mabel in You Rang M' Lord.
My ex band mate and best friend have called each other Malcolm for 40 years because of this even though neither of us is actually called Malcolm. I still go “oh Mum” a lot too. Classic!
THAT advert was the bain of my life. What with that, and the kiddies rhyme, "Doctor Foster went to Gloucester...", I often wished for a better name.
Good old Bertie Bassett was my cross to bear.

I thought that was her !! She had the immortal line "I would value it" to which Fletcher replied facetiously "I bet you would."
It still brings a smile to my face more than 40 years later 😂. What a drip !!
We still use "Course you can Malcolm!" now along with " That's 'andy 'Arry... stick it in the oven." The power of advertising eh?
Malcolm AKA Nigel Plaskitt
Hope you’re keeping well 🤗
Another great one was "bring out the branston!!"
Head colds are back with a vengeance, Mum......'Course they are Malcolm!
Nigel was also the voice of Hartley Hare
Hi, my name’s Malcolm. Can I comment on this post?
Of course you can Malcolm!
Absolute classic, found it at last
I still say that, sadly.
So do I. Gladly. Can't think why. Because it's not exactly a catchy Tune or even phrase.
faustus t Me to. It’s cool, really.
In a similar vein "day return to Dottingham" can't remember the product though
'Tunes....help you breathe more easily.' (I think).
What happened to Malcom - did he realise sniffing stuff ya nose isnt a good idea when he started on the devils nose candy ?
Evening!
Brilliant 👏 👏 👏
What year was this? Thanks
Is the woman who plays the mother the one who played Mabel in You Rang, M' Lord?
Yes. Also seen in Oh, Doctor Beaching and one episode of Porridge where shes a Home Office visitor who goes into Fletchers cell when he wants some piece
Do you have the 1994 version of this advert???
"Oh Bum!"
Ha ha nice one
Love this old advert!!!!
Is that Aunt Ethel from Eastenders ?
Yes it is. This was about 73_75. Possibly earlier. Well spotted.
Yep with a pug dog.
@@peterarmstrong6730 no it is not
Granted they do look alike, but Ethel Skinner is played by Gretchen Franklin.
Oh mum
😅😂😂😂😂
