Great reaction to a new song. Yes, Band-Maid uses influences of metal and a lot of other genera, but they never cross that line. Lovebites is a talented power metal band. You'll be able to tell instantly. Keep Band-Maid coming. how about comparing Puzzle (Official Live Video) vs Puzzle [acoustic, live at Zepp Tokyo 2018.
Lar, it's always fun to react to a very new Band-Maid release. Everyone seems to be shocked and blown away during their first reaction. It takes a few listens to rally understand what they are doing. "Protect You" is a song being used in an action anime. I understand the anime is very popular in France, so that's probably why Saiki sings a lot of "Ou la, la, las" in it.
At this point I'm pretty much used to hearing new Band- Maid and it doesn't grab me, but I know I'll appreciate it once it beds in to my brain. It's the opposite of why I tend to hate "The Hit" that Nobody Ever Needs To Hear Again and then realize a few years later that everything else that band did is pretty great... but sadly, their career was often pretty much sunk by getting heavy rotation. I suspect a lot of people who made Babymetal (who are great if you understand the concept and structure) blow up outside of Japan have moved on to whatever seems "cool" rather than actually good.

Band Maid is by far my favorite Japanese band, but occasionally I branch out and listen to Hanabie. Check out Tousou or We Love Sweets. They go haaaard.

This song also has strong punk/blues/ethnic vibe. The mini breakdown after the first chorus has koto or sitar (traditional instrument) if I'm not imagining, and continues into the 2nd verse behind heavy instrumental sound for a while. The way Saiki sings has the different flavour, too especially where she does the ascending vocal run. Apart from the minor grudge of over-compressed sound, I think the mix is balanced. I hear all the instruments and vocal equally clearly.
Plenty of fun here! Band Maid can definitely have metal leanings , and I love them for it - for what others may consider heavier Japanese metal try Drag Down, Jiluka or Kokeshi
technically they are actually Hard Rock, but they heavily blur the line of hard rock and heavy metal sprinkle in pretty much 80% of the other genres into their play style and you get the Band-Maid Genre. They just do whatever they want musically and know they can get away with it cause they have such a strong fan base. Love Bites is straight up Heavy/Power Metal
Bringing the thunder! Band-Maid is not a pure metal band although they have metal elements in some songs. If you want to hear a female J-metal band check out Nemophila.
Let's just say "hard rock" is their base genre. From there they branch out into just about every other genre possible - punk, jazz, metal, pop, funk, acoustic, etc. They even delve into traditional Japanese instruments with their alter ego, BAND-MAIKO. 👘
Long story short, label them whatever you want, it will more than likely be applicable.
So, everything is relative. The Japanese ladies are just...how should I say this...more badass than western male rockers. Compare Band-Maid with Hanabie or Nemophila or Saiseiga.
