  • In this week’s episode, I’m at the BONE 31 Hunt in New Hampshire enjoying a beautiful day of metal detecting an OLD tavern site with friends! Join me, Gypsy Jewels, Amanda Digger Degaz, and Miguel of Garrett Metal Detectors as we uncover OLD coins, an elusive military relic (at least in this part of the country), and… a spill that I ALMOST walked away from! Enjoy!

    Nothing like the camaraderie of hunting with a bunch of friends and great people, and everyone is psyched for each find, no matter who nails it. There were some awesome finds in the vid, especially the 1797 DBLC, Seated half-dime, which is now officially taunting you, and the pair of whole crotal bells in one hole. Very nice vid!

  • @olivei2484
    @olivei2484 Před 3 měsíci

    Cool digs. Taverns were very important in Early New England. For travelers as lodging on stage roads and planning the American Revolution. The tiny bells most likely were used in combination with larger ones, typical of either stage horses or sleighs (sleighs run quiet, better for other horses to hear one coming along). Check out the Carriage Museum of America (Long Island, I think).

    • @StefDigs
      @StefDigs  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yes, they were extremely important for the weary traveler! I know the crotal bells would’ve been strung together with increasingly larger ones - that must’ve been a LARGE strap to include two that were the same size! As you saw, I included photos of the crotal bells on their straps - wanted to show people why bell spills happen sometimes! 😄 It’s too bad they don’t have makers marks anymore, perhaps they wore off or those bells (0 or 00 in size) were simply too small for a stamp. I love them! 😆

    • @olivei2484
      @olivei2484 Před 3 měsíci

      @@StefDigs I ran sets on my team of ponies. Such a happy sound. Hard to find good ones new, they are always a little flat sounding. The small ones would be low on the belly strap, so they often would get caught in the harness or shafts and knocked off. The upper ones would sometimes get caught in the reins, depending on the vehicle.

    • @StefDigs
      @StefDigs  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@olivei2484 makes sense! That one that still rings is surprisingly loud, hah! They’re really hit and miss with how they sound. I have a 00 that barely rings because the iron “dingler” still isn’t done shedding its rust, lol. Gotta love bells - it’s a sound nobody’s heard in a LONG time whenever you dig one! 😄
