Astrophotography: Micro Four Thirds and Full Frame

  • I recently took ALL of my cameras out on an adventure to get some astrophotography photos and to see what results I could achieve. Is full frame better than micro four thirds for astrophotography? There are definitely some advantages to full frame, but you can still get some brilliant results with micro four thirds!

Please note: This isn't meant as a "shoot out" or a comparison video, as all the cameras were using different lenses and I shot using different techniques! This is more just for fun to see what I could achieve as a photographer.

I just signed up for your course. Astrophotography is something I've been wanting to learn for a long time. I just picked up a GH6 with the 10-25mm and 25-50mm lenses. Big and exciting purchases! I live full-time in an RV and will be heading out to the desert of Arizona to camp amongst the Saguaro cacti in another 2 weeks. I'm hoping to apply the course information to capture immersive time lapse and photos. So, so exciting!!

Your presentation is so infectious, it makes us feel like we're right there looking at the stars with you! My stars are single shot, G9, Laowa 7.5mm, ISO up to 6400, DxOPhotolab5 processing.

That little G100 did do a very well I thought however as we all probably expected the S5 was cleaner with more depth. Just goes to show that you can use what you've got and still get good results though. Thumbs up for a very nicely put together and interesting video.

Interesting, I was going to ask if you'd done long exposures with the GH6, so hopefully you'll get a chance at that too in the near future! I'm quite glad you went the stacking route, as it can do so much with regards to increasing the signal against the noise. For DSO (Deep Sky Object) astrophotography, micro four thirds is a relatively popular sensor size (doubly so with dedicated cooled cameras). I'm really hoping the GH6 manages to outperform the GH5 and even match the GH5S for long exposure noise, as that would be a rather lovely perk to say the least.

  • @sentineloffreedomforever1381

Nice. You got great results from all your gear!
I got the Olympus 8mm 1.8 Pro for my E-M1 III and that combination easily keeps up with any full frame setup as there is no comparably wide, fast and sharp lens available for full frame. Plus Live-Composite, Starry AF really help in quickly getting the shot you want in camera.

Sidenote: If you've ever dropped your phone/tablet then the gyroscope or compass in your device can massively mess with the accuracy of your apps such as: Night Sky, SkySafari, Stellarium, etc. etc.
So do a few infinity loops with your device (horizontal 8s) and it'll have way better calibration. I drop my phone so damn often and sometimes it's a full 45 degrees off but a few calibration moves always puts it within a few degrees which is more than fine for milkyway photography.

    Found online:
    The NPF Rule
"A much more complicated and accurate rule for sharp stars is: (35 x aperture + 30 x pixel pitch) ÷ focal length = shutter speed in seconds. Pixel pitch = the camera sensor’s physical width in millimeters ÷ number of pixels in width x 1000 to measure it in microns."
So...30 seconds seems a bit much in most cases. I have a Sony A7Rii and a 14-24mm f/2.8 Sigma lens. The pixel pitch is 4.49. Doing the math, at 14mm, the max shutter speed is 16.6 seconds. At 24mm, the max shutter speed is 9.7 seconds. Sure, you can raise that by increasing the aperture, but then you need to increase the ISO when actually taking the picture.
I also have an Olympus EM1 mk2. Pixel pitch is 3.32. Using my 8mm f/1.8 fisheye gives me 20.3 seconds. So, I would need to up the aperture to 2.8 if I wanted to expose for 30 seconds...but that means I need to raise the ISO.
I prefer to keep that ISO lower...so that means limiting my shutter speed to get the sharpest stars and avoid those little star trails.

  • @robertclark5874
    @robertclark5874 Před 2 lety

Great stuff! I never knew it could be so complex! I always used to point my tripod at the brightest stars, use the widest aperture, and make several shots with different iso/exposure combos to see which is sharpest. But of course those darn stars start to move after 12-15 seconds. But this is amazing that there are so many choices. But I'm very surprised that you are using lenses with >2 aperture.

How did you get on with noise of your GH5?
Last October I had a go shooting the Milky Way from Anglesey and with NR turned off, it was awful with so many hot pixels many of the shots were ruined. I was hoping to stack them with dark frames but the results were poo.
NR was great but the delay wasn’t conducive to a good Timelapse either.😥
This weekend I’m hoping to get the Milky Way with Mr Orion and some zodiacal light with my GH6 and I’m hoping the new sensor is considerably better at handling noise. I’ll also be keeping a pro Astro photographer company, simply because I don’t have a scooby what zodiacle light is.🤣

I have one for my Canon FD lenses, but I don’t really have anything else to adapt that needs one! They’re a great way to get wider apertures on the system tho 😊

@@MicroFourNerds really cheap way to get very fast lenses. Its great with my gx85 and cheap second hand canon 28mm f1.8.
