- In this video, I share my experience sending in my Sony 70-200GM for repair being a Sony Pro Support member. I share the process and experience from beginning to end, as well as the cost of the total repair. I don't share if it's worth it for you; that will be in another video you can check out later.

I’m just a regular tog landscape shooter & don’t have Sony Pro. I used “Digicam” which is Sony’s authorised repairer here in Australia, to get a decentered 16-36gm lens repaired under warranty. The service & attention to detail was outstanding. I could not recommend their services highly enough. The lens came back super quick, sharper than original. I’ll definitely be using them again! 😀👍 thanks for making this video. 👌
Hey Danny/Everyone! I was wondering whuch MC-11 adapter did you use to convert the Sigma 70-200mm to your Sony a6500?
Was it the MC-11 Sigma SA or Sigma/Canon EF?
I was hoping you or anyone could explain the difference as well. Ive been google searching but it doesnt say on the website or there isn’t any distinction between the two. I want to be able to use the MC-11 adapter for other Sigma lenses
Thank you guys for taking the time to read this 🙏🏽
I've never been a fan of Peak Design
Most items the sell are to expensive, and not afforbal for Students like me. The only praktical item is the camera clip..
(Sorry for the englisch, i am from Bavaria in Germany)
The backpack is really pretty mediocre. Looks good but the dividers just doesn't keep things in place. I sold it, went to a tenba and never looked back.
@@ralftee1532 oh yeah the camera clip and some of there smaller items are cool. But there bags are worthless and there new tripod is also not worth half what they are selling for. But that's just my opinion and opinions vary haha
@@Catbert814 Yeah they look "fancy" but really what's the point of a camera bag if its simply not functional. Plus they are way over priced.
I don't like that peak design shit either. Domke bags and Gordy's straps for me.
I also would never own a Sony camera, lol.
I don't have pro support but recently had my 100-400 losing communication with the camera, Sony sent me a tag and the lens is now at Precision Camera in CT. Hoping it won't be too long without, the lens did work most of the time but with 1 week left on my warranty thought it was wise to get it repaired. If Sony can make good support happen they really will be on top of the game.
Dope background in this video.
Danny-- are we gonna get a Sigma trio vs Sony 16-55 G lens comparison for apsc???
I bought 70200 gm a week ago and i do cary it on the bottom section on peak design everyday backpack 🤣 Should I stop doing it, to not repeat your scenario 😬
Found dust and a scratch on the internal element of my 200-600. Been going back and forth on sending it in while it's still under warranty. On the on hand, I obviously don't want a scratch or dust in a lens that is completely sealed, since that means it's almost certainly not something I'm at fault for. On the other hand, it doesn't show up in photos and I'm worried that the lens might not work as well after it gets worked on, as it works great now. Also, don't have pro support so it'll be gone for a while.
Why didn't you compare it to the loaner?
Because every pro can wait three weeks? The pro support has a three week lag for loaners? Just asking as I think of moving to Sony from Nikon.
The exact thing happened to me with that lens. I accidentally dropped my bag no more than one fit from the ground and one part of the lens partially separated from the other. The images/videos were blurry after the drop. Luckily for me I was able to return the lens and get a refund.
Interesting topic, Danny. Thanks for sharing and hmm, Peak Design backpacks didn't come off so well in this story. I just bought their new 6L sling but have never cared for the design of side openings on the backpack.
Sports shooter here. I had a terrible experience. One of my A7III started having issues with the shutter when it was still under warranty. Called Sony, told me to reset the camera, I did, problem went away for a while. Warranty expired, problem came back, and they wanted to charge me $650 to repair it. I said no. $40 bucks to get my camera back from Precision Camera, and what a disappointment that was. I still use the camera for video, and with electronic shutter, but I dont trust the mechanical. I found out the problem has happened to other people and Sony has not addressed it in the form of a recall. I did not have pro support, but $650 for a problem that started before warranty had expired was unfair. They have the records I called, I don’t need to lie. Because of this, I haven’t fully switched to Sony. I’m glad you only paid $700 for a 70-200 fix.
Ray Martinez the reason why most of us don’t switch is because canon and nikon are tanks. the ‘secret’ is durability. I know many pro with d4s with the shutter count over 2M. only after 3/4 years we will know if sony a9 users will have the same performances.
I am what I am I shoot A9s but have kept my 1DXIIs just in case, and because of my primes.
Ray Martinez all the new sony addicted pros are still posting images with the hastag #sonyambassador #sonyalphapro but also #testing 🤣
I had 2 sony a7iii's in April of last year, both front focused horribly. I trouble shot it with sony, sent the cameras in, got them back, trouble shot some more.....PROVED beyond a shadow of a doubt using their OWN testing method that it STILL front focused on both of them. Using 4 different lenses, 2 different bodies, with a known good body that didn't front focus at all. After 2 months sony engineers basically said "we don't know why this is happening" and told me that was all they could do. I ended up selling both bodies and using a7r3, which focuses perfectly. For anyone curious I still have video showing the front focus issue. You can watch me live focus on a certain point, snap the picture, and immediately review the picture (all on video, mind you) and you can clearly see that the focus is in front of where the camera said it was focused. I'm not the only one that has had this issue either. I love sony but they have problems that they won't admit to. k
John D I agree 100%. I’ll check out your video.
I have Sony pro support and have loved it. However I just sent my 70-200 lens in. No visual damage but the camera wasn’t registering with my lens. I sent it in. Got a call yesterday that my cost will exceed the price of the lens and that I can get a new one for $1900 plus tax. Um WTF!!! $2000 or more to repair the lens?? I have had a few repaired and no where near that price. Something is feeling fishy or odd or I don’t know.
Have you ever used CPS? I think your experience will be better with them. Turnaround is usually two days
absolutely love pro support
so how much was the repair..
You are know to break gear. I think your a9 complaints when you were the 1st to bring up the overheating has you placed in the “handle with care or go above and beyond” list.
I made a hard stop in my car with my a7RIII + 70-200GM sitting in the passenger seat. The camera/lens shot forward onto the floorboard and the lens hood popped off (I thought). What actually happened was the filter ring on the lens broke off and stayed attached to the lens hood. I filled out the form on the Precision web site, sent it in, and it was back like new in about 5 days for a little more than $600.00. I don't have Pro Support.
What does peak design have to do with this? You dropped the bag. Could this not happen in any other bag too?
Well, depends on how far you drop the bag. The bag is purpose made to protect your gear, so it should puffer a slight drop or vibrations.
I felt for you. Got similar experience on my a6000. I dropped the camera and broke the battery compartment cover which cost me aud250 to fix it. My guess aud100 should be more than enough. Not happy at all but it'll cost me aud1000+ at the time to get a6300 so I paid. 😫
Daniel Lai yes Sony repairs are way overpriced. I bought 3 year drop and spills coverage for 10% the cost of the camera. Repairs are always ove 300 usd with Sony.
I had an issue with my 70-200 f4 the manual focus didn't work all of a sudden. I have Sony Pro Support - I went on to the site told them what I needed they sent me a shipping label that day I sent it in - 2 weeks later I got it back - NO CHARGE - they kept me informed the entire time with emails and even after I got my lens back they still checked in on my PLUS - They gave me a year of Pro Support for nothing - I own 6 Sony cameras and many lenses and only have used support twice once with the lens and when my 7Riii fell out of my bag and busted the evf glass (not the evf itself) can't say enough about it get it - its totally worth it
What's up Danny! Hope all is well with you.
I just bought a 16 35 f4
I just saw the new Alpha 1 and wow. I'm thinking maybe I should switch. I shoot Canon and the one thing that has me sticking with Canon is their CPS. I was a newspaper photographer and broke stuff on average once a year and it never took more than a week for a repair with Canon. Just this month I fell on my 24-105. I sent it out on Tuesday morning it was repaired and back on Friday. I don't know I think I'll stick with Canon if the new mirrorless 1DX type version if as good or close to the new Alpha. Oh yea I have the free version of CPS by the way. I have a ton of equipment and you get points for each piece of equipment you have and if you have enough you can join CPS for free.
Haha its funny I have the Peak Design Every Day Messenger and I swear my 70-200's lens hood is always getting caught on the dividers.
Dude I don’t shoot Sony but it sounds like you got the support everyone should get without Pro support .
Doesn’t sound very spectacular to me . Maybe I just expect companies supporting their product. The heavy price you pay for that lens pays for support up front
Troy Phillips 2 weeks is a long turnaround for pro support
Look. I am a Sony Pro Support Member (and Sony Kando 3.0 attendee too) so I'd bet most will think I'll only give positive responses about Sony. My experience with Sony Pro Support is the same!! I had to get my Sony a7RIII shutter repaired (out of warranty) with the same communication with customer service and had my own person handling all repair info. I too enjoy our discount. Sony is truly the absolute best! Long-time viewer! Holla at me anytime for info or whatever.
My experience with Nikon uk wasn’t that good . I waited over 8 weeks for a 70-200 f2.8 repaired. Then when it came back had dust inside. That’s one reason I change to Sony as I had no loyalty-to Nikon after that.
I am a Sony Pro Support "member". I'll use them after I get back from a trip to Morocco, in two weeks. They offer free cleaning which will come in handy when both (a6400 & a7iii) of my cameras are exposed to the elements of sand, salt water, etc. Stay tuned. BTW, love your videos.
This entire experience has just reinforced why I deal with Canon and CPS. Canon would have turned this entire process over in a week and I would have virtually automatically had a loaner in the process. All I have to do is ask. Easy-peasy.
Well, I don't have Pro Support only because you must own 2 full frame Sony bodies and 3 G master lens or Zeiss lens, which I don't yet. I sent in my 70-200 Gm to Precision camera and I'm waiting to hear what the repair would cost. It's $479 for the labor plus whatever the parts cost. Yikes..
At least the 55mm didn't break. I picked up my 70-200 used for $2000. $700 for repairs is a lot of money but there really is no other option.
Exactly
Are you in Austin?

Sent my A7III for repair on Nov 2019, half press shutter button to focus was not working properly anymore, intermittently working. Sent the camera for repair to Precision, still under warranty. They fixed the camera and in matter of 1 week I had my camera back including shipping. Camera came back functioning properly, they had replaced the shutter button electronic board. However, the camera body returned with a noticeable dent on the left side, next to the audio jack port. Also there was a bump under the plastic skin next to the NFC sensor. I called Precision immediately to let them know and the nice lady I spoke to on the phone said that there is a 90 day warranty policy for any repairs, so the camera could be send back to fix these issues if I wanted to. After testing the camera for a few weeks decided not to send the camera back since there was no operational issues, rather just cosmetics. Besides, I was able to get rid of the bump under the plastic cover next to the NFC sensor, I found some debris from the repair, they broke a ceramic seal that surrounds the NFC sensor and left pieces there. The NFC works fine, so it is ok. So the only "issue" remaining is the dent on the body.
From this experience these are my takes:
-The quick turnaround in my case was really fast. Within two days they received, repaired and shipped back the camera. Shipping was quick since I live in the NE so next day I had my camera back.
-They fixed what was broken BUT the way they take care of things is not good.
-Decided not to send the camera back to avoid having more issues
-Will I send any camera to Precision again for repairs if I had another alternative, NO I will not send my camera back to them if I had other options.
I baby my cameras, since these are at the end "fragile" tools/electronics and I need them in good state.
Good story, I wouldn’t have been so forgiving if they dented mine. The question is what other repair options or companies do you have? KEH comes to mind, do you know others?
@@jamesbell8730 there is a shop in NYC, Photo Tech, which is an authorized repair center, with great reviews. Unfortunately, when I called support they indicated to send the camera to Precision, since they handle the warranty repairs.
Had a similar issue around 2014 when i sent my point and shoot camera for a lens cover repair (still under warranty). They returned it working but a hotspot appeared in the sensor, and then few months later autofocus just stopped working. By that time, the warranty is done and if i send it for further it will cost more than the actual price of cam. No thanks, i wont every buy that kind of cam.
Mine is horribly soft even at f4 :(
Canon turnaround is much quicker just with the silver is 3-5 business days. Gold 2 days turnaround and Platinum by far the best.
yea that pisses me off that you have to wait for them to tell you it will take 3 days more longer before you get a loaner lens.. hell it take 3 days or longer for them just to get it and start the repair process. so by time it tells you you can get longer a week is passed.. crazy.. i hate that process.
Yeah, that’s an area they need to work on.
Canon CPS provides 48hr turn around on repairs or a free loaner. Wonderful service. They answer the phone 24/7!
Does being a CZcams help get better support?
I nodded off a few times. Did he say the price of the repair finally?
yep $779.99
Had Pro Support for 5 years. In Europe it's free :-)

@@reg171reg it's not free. Gas prices are off the charts and paying wages are bellow minimum wages in the US. How do I know? We moved here when I was a kid to have things we could never there.
I like how people in the comment section are bashing PeakDesign even though he was rough with the lens getting it out of the bag, (If my lens hood is caught somewhere, I don’t just Willy-nilly yeet it out of my bag). Camera bags don’t drop themselves btw, regardless of brand.
Sony Pro Support is great but I’ve had terrible experiences with Precision Camera. Sent a 50 1.4 Zeiss Sony lens and after three times and charging me $375 the issue I sent it in for was never fixed. It wasted over a month of my time. In the end I sent the lens directly to Sony in San Diego and they agreed that the lens would not focus sharply at near wide open apertures and completely sent me a brand new lens. I really wish Sony would bring repairs in house and ditch Precision Camera. On Yelp Precision Camera has a 2 star rating. And $795 for your lens repair even with the discount is way too much. That should have been a $400-500 repair tops.
Peak design are way expensive and not too functional. But 700 on top of the store price, that bag was quite expensive for you. You may write the repair cost off as a business expense
As a Sony shooter I am not to impressed with your experience. I remember when I shot Canon my 50mm (the affordable 1.4) was sent in, no pro support and I got it repaired for free in one week.
@that1cameraguy ... I'm not sure if you got special treatment because of who you are but when I needed the sensor cleaned on my a6400 and checked the reviews on Precision Camera Repair I read pretty bad reviews. I checked with my local camera shop (Hunts Photo) and they said that even though that is the company Sony has their repair contract with, they have gotten so many complaints about Precision that they have found other options for their customers. Glad you had a positive experience with them but I wouldn't send anything I own to them for repair.
Mikaeel Abdu Al Wadood ...I'm wondering the same thing about special treatment because I had to use them twice and it was both awful experiences. I sent in a 35 1.4 for soft focus and they charged me for a front lens assembly replacement that didn't fix the issue. The next time I sent in a body and 2 lenses for cleaning and the whole ordeal took almost 2 weeks to get everything back . Overall would not recommend pro support if you have to deal with precision camera
Sounds like peak design has some splaining to do.
Canon gave me a loaner of a 24-70 in like a day.
Sony camera gears are like a banana, it breaks so easily unlike my old Canon or Nikon I had in the past. But their camera works well, so I'm shooting Sony also.
Man, get rid of your Peak Design Bags....it is time to move on and send them a bill for your broken equipment....
mustardymayo why would peak design be responsible for him dropping his gear/not being careful in getting it out?
2 weeks is way too long for pro support. I shoot Sony but Nikon support was faster. It should be a week. I think Sony just replaces all the internal glass or most of it.
Agree. If it was a lens critical to your business you'd be dead in the water (though you should always have plan B's), and how many small businesses can withstand multiple weeks of that.
@@loudandclearmedia Of course as a working photographer I have some options, primes or a cheaper zoom. I don't need/own a 70-200 f:2.8. Just 2 weeks seems a long time considering it involves an annual membership fee. I think basically Sony replaces most of the internals of the lens. The whole optic group, not single glass elements.
@@stefpix I too am a working photographer and also have other options, but agree that 2 weeks is too long for a membership based service with "pro" right in the name. Not all pros are as obsessed with gear as I am, or have deep enough pockets to afford backup gear. Pros need their gear to make a living, and IMO any service I pay a membership fee to use should be sending out loaner equipment as soon as the service tag is approved. Auto insurance and AAA cover rental cars when yours breaks, even most dealerships will loan you one as repairs are being made, so why not camera companies?
Story time
Sony has the worse customer support.
Peak design are crap. They look rubbish and the design doesn't hold your lenses safe
i like the camera straps but i have seen a lot of people have issues with the capture clip with cameras falling off it.
@@RennyChuggs possibly user error?
@@RennyChuggs which version of the clip though... Early version, yeah that could happen... Also, how many actually check that the fixtures haven't worked loose?
Too wordy.
SONY SUCKS
Sony gear is built like junk.. it's all about the spec lists
