It has since been sold again and now abandon. The people who bought it started renovating the inside and a lot of it is dismantled and rooms tore up and left this way, It is now just sitting, abandon, and wasting away. Its so sad to see this once beautiful home now sitting and nothing being done.

I did the landscaping here when Dave dobbson owned it. Such a privilege it was to spend time on the property and work for such wonderful people.

There's a college on I think on John's Island in South Carolina, a wonderful school that teaches the old methods used in building these beautiful mansions. One of the problems with maintenance and rehab with these structures was the lack of skilled workers. Would be interesting if these homes while being rehabed could also be a training or learning experience for the students of that college.

William Elkins daughter, Eleanor was on the Titanic with her husband George Dunton Widener and their son, Harry. Eleanor survived but she lost both her husband and son. Very sad.

Using the estate for public use is the best idea. Having weddings, conferences and musical events could be in a substantial sum. Also, giving tours of the estate would help as well.

The problem with these estates is that they are so very expensive to maintain because you can’t get the same materials to repair them. It is cost prohibitive. Unless a philanthropist buys it and has some continuing foundation to help fund it they just go by the way side. It’s a shame but this is why there are so many abandoned mansions and which is why they do not build these anymore. At today’s prices one cannot afford all the staff that is required to keep them up.

Downtown Abbey was staged in a mansion, and that would be an idea too if it could be handled and money brought in somehow for it?

What's truly sad is that there are mansions sitting empty like this when there are so many homeless people. Even the original owner gave money for an orphanage.

I just don’t get why people think they need a mansion so large. To me it’s just a waste of space.
