_The most difficult part of learning how to ride a bicycle is when people makes fun of you while practicing. Being laughed by others for your struggles can be the worst feeling. But remember fulfilment to learn cycling is a life changing experience so don't let those people stop you to this life changing experience._

It took me 3 days to learn (practiced for about an hour everyday) and hubby has now bought me a bike for bday so now I’m whizzing around with both my boys. I think the fear of falling was the thing that held me back whilst learning. But actually your more likely to land on your feet and the only time I fell it didn’t hurt. Try to find open flat space to practice on, as spacial awareness is not great when you first start and you keep stopping as you think you will bump into something. Good luck x

This video has a wrong advice: "focusing on a front object can help ”- certainly NOT! At the beginning you must see the bike and which side it tilts, so you can steer the handlebars in that direction. I can't believe everyone is asking this from a beginner! This advice is only good if you learn to keep your balance consciously. And gradually (sometimes you look away) you can do it unconsciously.

    I did it!
I am 18 years old, and I never rode a bike. It was kind of a bad childhood. Two weeks ago, I saw one of my friends in college riding one, and it looked very fun. I was thinking that I don't want to die without giving it a try.
So I talked to him and said that I never rode one. He started laughing and thought I was joking. He was in shock when he realized that I wasn't joking. After that, he and some other friends encouraged me to buy one, so I did.
The first day of learning how to ride didn't go smoothly. It hurt to sit on the bike, and I couldn't move it. My friends started teaching me for about three hours, and then I started going in a straight line with the bike. It was a huge process for me, and after that, I fell and hurt my hand. It was very painful, and I could barely sleep that night.
For a few days, I couldn't ride it because of my hand. Then I kept training with my friends, and I fell and hurt myself many times. It really wasn't easy.
Today at 12 am, when I was about to sleep, I looked at the sky from my window, and I felt a weird positive energy. I took my bike and rode it. I was scared, but I did it anyway. I was heading to the beach near my home, and I was riding it well somehow, although I was very scared. After some time, I stopped and called my friends. I told them that I was going to the beach by bike. They thought I was joking since it was the middle of the night. I sent them a picture, and they were in shock. It was hilarious.
Then they woke up, took their bikes, and followed me. We rode together, and it was like a dream for me two weeks ago. It was unforgettable memories. I am glad that I didn't give up learning and trying.
It was completely worth it! :)

Edit: Good news, I can ride now, so yayyyyy🎉

as someone whose parents didnt even really try to teach me how to ride a bike and is now trying to learn on their own as an adult, all i can say is parents should really make that effort whether their kid is enthusiastic about it or not. Its feels genuinely humiliating to practice balancing and working my way towards pedaling in a straight line as a 24 year old in front of a bunch of people at the park, but I'm still gonna try cause I really feel like I would enjoy riding one around and not want to drive anymore if I could just get comfortable with it first.

I learnt to ride a bicycle on my own in 3 days just by watching this video(obviously efforts were mine but this video gave me directions). So you can rely on this technique.
Now let me give you a brief about myself
    1. I am a 21 year old and have had a few failed attempts at learning to ride since childhood.
    2. I don't consider myself physically fit and am a little overweight because of my sedentary lifestyle for past few years( I was preparing for Medical entrance exam so never had time).
    3. I am not at all sporty or physically active though now I am working towards it.
These are sort of disclaimers for you to NOT assume that I must have cycled after a longtime but I initially knew how to ride OR you need to be extremely physically fit to learn to ride and specially if you are an adult.
FUN FACT: During my earlier failed attempts ( the last was 5 years ago though) I used to think that I could not balance on the bicycle after so much of effort, there must be some defect in my body, maybe my left side was heavier than right HAHAHA but believe me I am completely normal (and thank god now I know).
Coming back to my 3 day journey
    1. I bought a bicycle that was right for me that I had control over and of right height (which is also the first step in the video) on 30th september evening.
    2. BALANCING:
On 1st October early morning practiced SCOOTING for about 40 minutes( the second step in video).
I didn't even touch the paddles
TIP : Don't get the paddles installed for a first couple of days if you are buying a new bicycle or if possible get the paddles removed if you have a cycle already.( it is completely alright if you don't follow this tip I personally couldn't get the paddles removed but I would recommend you to do that it would be of great help)
I followed the same step SCOOTING in the evening as well for about 40 minutes.
PAIN: after learning a little bit to balance on first day and sitting on the bicycle for long I had some some cramps in my calf muscles and in the lower abdomen and hips. It wasn't extreme but I felt a little uneasy and pained a little bit when I started practicing the second day initially I could not sit on the cycle. But I think that's normal when you start a new exercise or physical activity. It was not extreme so I ignored it and it was gone within a few hours.
    3. On 2nd of October I realised that I could SCOOT and keep my leg above in the air without tilting to one end for about few seconds.
I could see that the scooting helped me a little bit, I could see myself improving.
    4.PADDLING:
now came the turn to use the paddles.
    Here I improvised little bit
I paddled the right paddle while keeping my left leg on the ground and then I paddled the left paddle by keeping my right leg on the ground.
Initially it wasn't very spontaneous, I could not do both the step simultaneously and smoothly one after the other but I kept trying to get it incorporated into my reflex.
After learning to balance a little bit on my first day the above step was the only thing that I intended on to do on 2nd and 3rd October
On second day I practiced only in the morning for about an hour or maybe even less,I did not practice that day in the evening.
    5. On 3rd of October that is on the third day in the morning I was as usual practicing to spontaneously do the improvised paddling technique that I discuss the about in the step 4 and before I could attain perfection in it I realised that I was paddling properly(like one is supposed to, while actually riding on a road) for few seconds continuously about 1 or 2 complete paddling cycles and I obviously had to use my feet to stop in between those.
    6. I kept practicing for about an hour or maybe more than that and I realised that I could cycle properly for a considerable distance and I was attaining speed but still I faced a little bit of a disbalancing after every few metres.
    7.BRAKING:
After cycling properly for little distance I obviously attained speed and could not use my feet to stop so that when I discovered breaks ( use of it obviously).
All this happened in the morning session of 3rd October that is the third day.
I could ride on my own for the first time in 21 years of my life though only for little distance uninterrupted.
I can't tell you how good it felt it felt like I was Reborn.
    8.FINALLY:
It was the last session of the three day journey.
It was in the evening of 3rd October that is the third day where I could cycle without any help or skidding, double the distance(from one end to the other in my building's corridor) I was able to cycle in the previous session that is the same day in the morning. My results were way better than that shown in the video obviously because I practiced for three days
I asked my mother to make a video of me cycling for the first time and sent it to all my loved ones.
At the end what I would like to say is that I am still not perfect at it.
I still have to hit the road to see if I can ride there.
I still need a lot of practice
But in these three days I learnt at least 10 times of what I expected.
All it needs to learn something new is persistence and your desire to learn it no matter how old are you.
So all of you who are doubting yourself please go ahead.

I am 33y and I learned how to ride a bike 3 days ago. It took me only 30 minutes of practice without help from another person to hold my bike. The tips they mentioned in this were exactly what matters except getting a hand of someone else to help you with the momentum. What benefits me the most was getting the bike seat low enough so that I can put my entire feet on the ground. When I asked for advice in previous time they all gave the wrong bike size “the adult size” instead of “height size” since I am 160 cm (around
5”3). After getting the right bike size, I started to fear less and balance more. I remember falling only 3-4 times during practice. On the second day of practice I was riding my bike smoothly 😁

hi. i'm 20 and i just learned how to ride a bike last week. i learned for 4 days. i never had bruises nor fell down. my advice, do it with a person who'll patiently assist you while learning. it was hard, and i almost gave up on the 3rd day. luckily, my boyfriend did not give up on teaching and motivating me. just today, i cycled 8 kilometers. it really is life-changing. cycling helps me ease my anxiety. so if you're on the verge of giving up on learning how to cycle, don't lose hope. you can do it. just practice and practice. I'm 31 and just learned yesterday! I think what helped the most is that I used a "teenager" bike. It's bigger than kids bike, smaller than the normal size bike and allowed me to securely touch the floor with both legs without any sacrifice. Also, it might be better to not let anyone hold your bike or you while riding. Get your own rhythm, speed and tell yourself "I will learn riding today!" (or anything that will work for you!). It's so much easier than it looks, and will definitely incentive you to accomplish other things.

I see a lot of people complaining about how to balance themselves and afraid to fall
TIP:If you think you are going to fall use your brakes slowly and put your dominant leg to the side on the ground
because its your first timing riding a bike your body doesn't know how to distribute the weight and balance the body
you need to keep practicing and your body will adjust itself, the human body is an amazing thing
kids adapt faster because they are still growing, but don't let this discourage you, maybe you are old and you don't learn as fast as kids, but that is natural you just need to put a little bit more practice then a kid

That made me learn cycling thoroughly and helped me win a cycling race at my school, my bike was the one with most scratches and paint damage due to the falls. I firmly believe the bike is not yours until you've crashed or fallen at least once, and that's okay! Just be safe, wear a helmet, and don't do things you're not comfortable doing. When you eventually fall, you'll realize it's not the end of the world and you'll get back up.

I just went for my very first cycle with my kids. They're 5 and 13, can cycle great and I'm 35 and just learnt the hard way. It was only my fifth attempt and I think I've just finished a 6/7 miles cycle. It attempting to go was embarrassing at first, not only that but painful. Dealing with three herniated discs and the bumps was hard. BUT I got through it. The trick folks? Laugh at your mistakes. We all do them. We can only get better. Just laugh about it. Screw what anyone else says. Having the praise from my kids today made the effort worth it. Now, I'm going to lie down and die lol.
Learn from my mistakes. Don't look down. Look dead ahead or wherever you want to turn to. Practice putting your feet on the pedals ASAP without looking. Use the breaks to get the feel. Don't hit a fence (lol!). Buy some nice new shoes that have grip enough to catch the pedals.
Good luck to anyone who sees this video (or comment) in the future. :)

    @12villages Před rokem +22

    These are the rules:
    1) Ignore the urge to look at the top of the front wheel. You will wander off. You should look straight ahead. 20 feet ahead.
    2) Cycle won't stay up if it doesn't move(pedal). Move to balance.
    3) You arms will automatically navigate(the handlebar) to the direction of your eyes. Some evolutionary trait. Look at where you have to go. If you keep looking at a person, or a rock(on the road) you want to avoid hitting, you WILL hit it head on. Don't look at them. A bizarre phenomenon indeed.
    4) Actual navigation(turning left or right) on a bicycle is done by shifting your body weight. A beginner wont be able to do it. Instead, press down on the handbar in the direction you want to turn. You will learn weight shifting turning on your own, trust me.
    5) Don't put your weight on the arms, you'll regret the pain and give up cycling.

I'm covered in mosquito bites, but it worth it!!!

I'm 38 and never learned to ride a bike. My father tried to teach me as a kid but I was always too scared and he was a crappy teacher. Basically he would put me on a bike (which I now realize was to big) and basically just went "ok petal". He gave me no knowledge of breaking and no helmet. To bad we didn't have CZcams back then.
It makes me feel better to know I'm not alone and this almost makes me want to take another shot at it.

To anyone reading: do not get frustrated if you're not seeing vast improvements. Just focus on one thing at a time. Make the next ride/pedal/scooting better than the one before. Be patient and keep at it! Being able to whizz past on 2 wheels is a great feeling, worth a few bruised knees.

I am 24, the only member in my family who doesn't know how to ride a bicycle, and have just started learning how to ride one. I do self-learning sessions every weekend, thereby have biked for hardly three days since I bought my bicycle.
Since I live in a considerably populated locality, I have people staring at me like a alien. The sad thing is that in my locality there's no scarcity of people who think it's funny that a 24YO grown man doesn't know how to ride a bicycle while children less than half my age do. But the good part is that I got more than enough people who are no less than a source of motivation to me to not give up.
At this moment, people who see me as an embarrassment for not knowing how to ride a bicycle don't matter to me much unlike before, and it feels easier to ignore them and keep learning without letting them affect me. 🚲☮️

Just got down a few old bikes from their hangers in the garage to teach my 26 yr old boyfriend how to ride for the first time. We spent time together cleaning them and checking the brakes, he even helped me fill the tires with air for the first time ever today! He watched me ride around to test that they feel fine, and I picked out one of them in his favorite color to make it more fun for him. I know he’s nervous but still wants to learn. I’m not the best teacher, so this really helps! Thanks!

I am 32, tried learning how to bike about 7 years ago, was made fun off and I quit. Good video just a little advice on 2 things:
    1. Never hold the bike (saddle back) when you're teaching as you are balancing the bike for them, so they're not learning it themselves. Also it puts a lot of strain on your fingers and hands. Instead hold the person around the sides of their shoulders or on their back slightly under their armpits (similar to lifting a child). That way as you hold and walk alongside them, they learn to balance and control the bike themselves.
    2. When mounting the bike hold it on whatever side that suits you, not just with the bike to your right side as illustrated. Someone could be right or left-handed so this should be borne in mind. Hope that helps.

The next time I tried, my cousin wouldn't help me balance at all. He laughed at me while I tried to hold a gate and ride next to it. Also I get on my bike when it's already moving and I can cycle without using my hands. When you cycle a lot as a kid it becomes really easy.

I am almost 55 years old, and I never learned how to ride a regular bicycle. When I was a child, nobody taught me, so I just never learned. Almost ten years ago, I bought an outdoor recumbent bike . It's a three wheeler, and designed very similar to a go cart. It has two 16 inch tires in the front and a 20 inch tire in the back. I absolutely love that bike, and never wrecked on it once. I have reflectors on it as well as a tall flag so people can see me. Although I'm very content with my recumbent bicycle, there's still a part of me that wants to learn how to ride a regular one, but I' worry about not being able to maintain my balance and fall. With my recumbent, it's not an issue. Maybe one day I'll learn.

No. Want to learn but I have seizures during sleep sometimes so doctor doesn't allow. But here in my Country seizure is not a problem when it comes to getting a license, etc (not that biking needs one). I guess it's a personal choice whether or not to follow doctor's restrictions. I am thinking of buying a bike anyway now. I have tried to buy several times and then stopped just because I remembered what doctor had said. But for a mild seizure that happens during sleep, I don't understand why I should give up all this freedom. Biking has been a dream of mine.
