- Today I'm making some modifications to the Fuel Storage Box project based on your suggestions. Modifications include ventilation, roof insulation, addition of thermal mass, notching the roof support, vapor escape for heavy gases (propane) that tend to pool. And at the end I will show you how these additions have helped keep the temps cooler and more regulated inside the box on hot days.

I like how you take everyone’s advice because some people just get too stuck on not admitting mistakes. These are all great improvements.
Thank you! I think they all made a good difference. And very much agreed on taking advice… it’s how we learn and grow. Sometimes we are right and sometimes others might have a better suggestion. With one exception… politicians and bureaucrats. They more often than not, can’t admit mistakes 😂
The roof is too reflective to get a good reading based on how the IR thermometers work. One trick you can do is to use sharpie or spray paint to make a black dot on the metal and then you'll be able to read the temperature much more accurately. That's what we do in chemical plants when we use the IR temperature guns on stainless steel piping.
You may have an emissivity setting, but I normally just do what Brett suggest with the black tape.
Definitely makes sense. I tried shading it but I think I’d have to have made a much larger shade than my hand to not have the interference of all of the light bounce back. Thank you for the advice too! 🙏😊
Nice job! 3 suggestions: 1. Paint the entire outside (including roof) with white paint. 2. Suck it up and continue your LPG drain consistently DOWNHILL - otherwise you are just creating a gas pocket in the event you do have a leak. 3. Clear at least 8 feet (preferably more) around the perimeter of the storage area of ANY combustibles. As you already know, a little fire and a little wind make BIG problems...

The corrugated roof is acting as an infrared "mirror". You are effectively taking the temperature of the sky. I tried the same experiment with a similar thermometer aimed at a piece of corrugated metal and got the same result as you. If you aim the thermometer at the sky, you'll get a similar reading, but probably a bit lower since the roofing material isn't a perfect reflector. That's one of the reasons it makes a great roof, all that infrared heat from the sun is reflected back to the sky.

@@homesteadonomics you can see it even better with a thermal imaging camera as you can see that most "reflective materials" including glazed tiles on the wall as well as painted smooth surfaces reflect infrared rays... you can basically take a selfie with a thermal imaging camera by looking onto a piece of sheet metal or something like that
this is one of the most common mistakes on thermal imaging as well as temp checking by home users... and why there are false readings that don't make any sense
Aim it at the under side of the same metal or put a piece of black tape ok the top. If you paint that whole thing white it will drop the Temps even more.
Put a thermometer inside the structure, check it later. Now you know what you need to know!

Block is obviously a wonderful heat reservoir. Not sure what kind of rainfall you get, but remember that masonry, earth, fiber, etc will have a significantly lower R-value when saturated.
Keep doing what you are doing Joe, you are alright by me and thousands of other folks. I might be considered a "prepper" but I grew up in the days when the BSA was teaching young men to be 'prepared' for whatever may happen. There were not any negative connotations with prepping back then, it was a way of life.

Mylar is very reflective......I have used mylar in many ways.....my tarp has mylar glued to one side and when mylar is turned to the sun it makes an incredible difference.....makes my camp much more comfortable..... just my personal experience

That is a great idea for fuel / flammable storage. These items, when stored in a shop or garage can be a disaster waiting to happen especially when it is hot. I'd bet if you painted the top roof and blocks white it would be considerably cooler inside.

The PC culture, the cancel culture, the confused culture, the offended culture….. we’ve got a boatload of problems. Yeah that propane vent would be more ideal to go straight out and not elbow back up like this. So if you got the topography I’d use that to your advantage. And about the 4:30’comment…. I’m not really sure what to call it for sure. Kickstand and roof support were the first to come to mind😂
Those were great suggestions. Joe self reliance was one of the things that attracted me to the channel. Living in southern Arizona and using rain water is the very definition of self reliance. Bear Down and keep the vids coming. 😊
Thank you Henry! I believe self reliance not only gives more peace of mind in an unstable world but also can enrich our lives depending on what the element of self reliance attained is. Could be as simple as being a great cook to keep more meals at home, or knowing more about car maintenance, gardening, etc,…. All the way to preparedness topics like home medical treatments, self defense, etc,. And everything in between….Bear Down👍😊

Measure the back side of a shiny surface if you can. If you can't put some tape on the surface and give it a minute for the temperature to equalize. Then measure the temperature of the tape. It won't be exact but it will be very close.
Another great suggestion that I wish I thought of… the underside🤦♂️. I was trying to get it all filmed rather quickly in between gusts of wind and I simply wasn’t thinking😂

I knew that I remembered watching this a few months ago.
I've been storing gas cans in a metal cabinet in my garage. Apparently one of them sprung a leak and now I have a mess on my hands.
This project just moved to the top of my list.
Good stuff - the changes are handy to chew on and there's something learned for me about the propane off gassing being heavier! Thanks for the info. And kudos to Marley for bringing the horned toad to visit too. Our dog used to love searching them out and then "losing" them when they'd stop moving - she could smell them, but not see them!
P.S. The propane venting tube, was the cherry on top! ; )

Yes, African and Australian overland vehicles, that’s where I learned the term!
In the North a similar technique is used to prevent icing on the roof. It is called a "cold roof" and uses 2x's run top to bottom between the sheathing that has a layer of felt on it and another layer of sheathing. This keeps the roof cold enough in the winter so the snow does not melt but will slide off. It also cools the roof thru a chimney effect.

Check for snakes under the false roof whenever you go to open the box. Or better yet block off that side between the roof and false roof so any snakes fall off the back when opening.

Just wondering if you don't have a problem with burrowing rodents. We had an 8 x 12 storage building set on a foundation made out of one foot square pavers and the little chipmunk sized ground squirrels burrowed under the pavers and made nests which of course made the floor of the shed week in areas because the pavers sunk into the burrows and got all out of sorts. Seems like they'd make quick work of tunneling under those cinder block walls.

Cool video, I just made a temporary fuel storage pit at our new property for the time being. I plan on building something similar to this but below the frost line for a more permanent solution later on.
I think a pit is a great idea. More thermal regulation and if the worst happens then you’ve got it in a sort of retention area for liquid fuel that might flow.

As for the propane/heavy gas vent, just do to the lowest portion of the block the same thing you did to the top portion. I don't think that trying to get gases to go through 2 90s is going to work very well.

Thoughts for your temperature differences; the corrugated metal in the sunshine is doing what it is designed to do, reflecting heat. The heat from your thermometer is being scattered by the metal roofing as well as being diffused by the sunlight. You do not have the same diffusion on the shaded under surfaces. Your heavy gas vent pipe could be providing cool air from the ground as the warmer air rises and flows outside the upper vents.

Yeah I think you’re right! The reflection of the material probably wouldn’t refract to get the temp. I tried shading an area with my hand to mimic the under size, since it registered accurately. But perhaps I needed a larger shade as the excess light reflecting my light have caused the issues with just having my hand shade that tiny spot.
And yeah, we love having them here as they pretty much feed on ants and I’d rather have these little guys versus the ants. Win win!
As for fires. They are here already. Some down near Sonoita which is a over the Santa Rita mtns from me. They’ve got a LOT of rolling grassland over there so usually once a year they’ll get something. As for us….just all the more reason to keep my firebreak maintained😅

That is over 20 square feet of rain catchment that you have just ignored. OH MY GOSH. 😃 I really do love your videos. If you cast a shadow on the top would it read that temp? Thank you! So regarding the shadow on the top it didn’t help….but it was just my hand. So perhaps a bigger shadow would help. Because the temp on the lower roof seemed reasonably accurate and it’s got the large shading.

I’m glad it was well received! Yes, it is the ‘cool’ thing for the world to deride and diminish anyone who has faith in God, because it challenges the authority that the ‘men of this world’ desire. Trust the gov, trust the science, question nothing, etc…. But sooner or later everyone ends up at a point where they must confront eternity and I’d just assume have my faith strong long before I get to that point. I live very close to the EU eastern border and recent events should have been a wake-up call but, as with AIDS, COVID, natural disasters, road accidents, etc, the impact soon wears off and most people allow life to return to normal. Do you have any issues with water getting in there? We get 4-5 ft of snow in the winter so I'd need some kind of drainage for the bottom
I think you could improve the cooling even further if you used narrow wooden blocks instead of the boards, especially if they're perpendicular to the prevailing winds. Also increasing the area of the false roof would help too.

I guess in between many people have mentioned the thing with the material coefficient for reflectiveness, which matters a lot in regard to readings of infrared thermometers.

Go with the unvented wavian cans so your fuel doesnt disappear. Stabil is not as good as PRI G. Use PRIG for restoring years old fuel. Stabil only says 1 year or less. In the event you need to store more away

Great video buddy as always! Question: is there anything specific you do about pest control? Example snakes and scorpions? Keeping the family safe? When I lived in Yuma we always had a problem with scorpions. Thanks pal!
The only thing was just to keep things cleared out away from the house so there isn’t areas for them to harbor. We tried a pest spray a while back around the house. Seemed to work on little bugs and even found a couple dead scorpions. But occasionally the still make it through. I’m not sure if a sure fire way to deal with them other than with heavy chems, which I don’t like to use unless we have to.
As for the fuel storage roof you could always line the whole interior with rock wool.
This is a great idea. Couple of questions. Do you use stabilizer in the gas? How often do you cycle it? I just built a shop with a living quarters. This might be my next project. Thanks!
I use ‘stabil’ in them and try to cycle through them between 12-18 months. There is another stabilizer out there that I can’t remember the name of right now but it’s supposed to be even better. If you check out the survival podcast with Jack Spirko I remember he did a couple podcasts on sorting things like this and they talked about the other option as being the one they’d recommend.

I watch your video on rainwater collection where did you purchase your galvanized tank.
Those temp scanners work best at 90 deg angle to surface being measured. Maybe why the top temp wasn't great.
Just need to make a small correction to the Horned Toad's binomial nomenclature, or scientific name (Genus species). First, I think its great that you provided not only the common name but also the scientific name. But the species name, or second word in the scientific name, is never capitalized, always lower case.

Did you consider digging a foot or two down to take advantage of the naturally cooler soil?
I did, but since it was kinda a small side project I went the lazy route😂

I definitely found it interesting, Joe! I’m over in El Paso TX and love watching your videos, especially since I also live in the desert. Know that you aren’t the only one mindful about preparedness, as my family has been making efforts in those areas as well. We live in the suburbs, so it’s a bit tougher, but we are miles ahead of where we were a year or two ago. If you ever need a place to stop at or to sleep while heading somewhere, know you have a friend in El Paso! HE>I
Well I will keep that in mind! My favorite seasoning for steak was from Great American cattle company in El Paso. My dad used to stop there on trips and would always pick up their seasoning. So good.
And as a matter of fact a buddy of mine has some land about an hour from El Paso where he hunts the wild Aoudad sheep that range there. He’s asked me a couple times to come out there with him for a hunt. If I end up needing to make a stop there I’ll hit you up😀👍

With the thermometer and scanning off the roof the interference might be coming from the sunlight reflecting off the roof interfering with the infrared sensor of the thermometer being that there is a certain amount of infrared light coming from the Sun to begin with you could try shading the spot your reading next time depending on how shiny the service you're reading is it might just be that you could try testing it on top of a vehicle surface in the same kind of conditions with the sun overhead and see if it does the same thing
I agree. That makes sense. I tried shading the IR spot with my hand but I’m sure there was just too much light reflecting every which way. Probably would’ve been better to get a larger shade area to mimic the lower roof, which seemed to register well. Thanks! 😊👍

try shading the spot you want to temp test. Piece of cardboard or your hat just when you are ready to do the test. Maybe shooting a shaded spot might work.
only thing I would add some screen around false roof to keep rats and things out if you do get heat in it throw a small chicken coop solar fan in the roof
I suspect the weird readings or from the reflection, try casting a shadow with your hand on the top peice and re scanning
So I did try shading with my hand but still same result. But the shading on the lower roof was much greater, so I am thinking though that if my shade was larger that it would work. Probably just to much excess reflected light confusing the thermometer.

I think so…. But in this iteration I replaced 2 of the 8x8x16 blocks with 4 - 8x8x8 blocks. So it’d be 40 of the standard and 4 of the half blocks

I read petrol stores for 6 months @ 68F
I’m not sure how long untreated, but I add a stabilizer that’ll get it 18mo in good shape so long as it isn’t in super hot conditions.

My dad always told me to never set the gas can on the ground. Maybe setting a board between the ground and the gas cans might avoid future moisture problems. Just sayin!
Living in northern Ohio if you set your cans on the ground the plastic will have condensation and metal will also and rust. Always set on wood, raised off of the ground like a pallet having air space will keep the cans dry. A vent under the cans to the outside will take care of propane.
Do not store fuel in plastic containers. Apparently, they let fuels degrade; whereas, steel does not.
Hmmm, I will look into that. Perhaps I’ll slowly start trying to acquire the nato style cans. Thanks
