- www.engvid.com Sometimes, it's hard to know if the verb in a sentence should be singular or plural. Learn more about such tricky cases in this short grammar lesson and take the quiz at www.engvid.com/... .
The way you taught this topic is remarkable. If you had my english teacher in my school days than I could have better results in English grammar. Thank you for these topics, you are awesome!
I wish you were my teacher in high school 🥺 you're so good!
Mam, why did you use 'were' not 'I wish you was' in your sentence? Could you please tell me?
Were and was are both past tense versions of the verb to be. But were is usually used in relate to second person singular and plural pronouns such as you, your, yours. It is also used with select first and third person plural pronouns such as we, they.
We use was, on the other hand, when we’re using the first person singular pronoun I or using the third person singular such as he or she.
For example, you wouldn’t say, “You was going to the store.” You would say, “You were going to the store.”
But you would say, “I was going to the store,” rather than “I were going to the store.”
Got it?
@@yiruma80 thank you!

Thank you very much Rebbeca for such an outstanding explanation of the concept.
in the last example two subjets are connected with and so you use are in the blank
but if there is a preposition only before one subject then both indicates a single thing
example
the poet and the philosopher are ...
the poet and philosopher is ....
Everything is clear. Thank you!

hey rebecca!! i have a doubt.. in the last sentence, it should be "the guitar and the amplifier are in the car".. am i right?
Dear Prof Rebecca,
I wonder if I might ask you a question? you said," 2 subject + and= plural verb." I have just found a particular expression at the page 528 of Pratical English Usage which was written by M Swan : This Gin AND tonic IS not very strong, isn't it? I do not understain why?
please accept my deepest apologises for disturbing you. I pay my respect ti you. Andrea
Andrea Giraldo It's because Gin and tonic is considered a single subject. It's a single type of cocktail. That particular type of cocktail IS not very strong.
Thank you kindly Mr/Mrs iGDave92

The connecting cable of the guitar and amplifier ........is or are .in the car. then what? Another one is, the progress of the corona and HIV .........is or are? I am asking this question because I have seen some journals consider this as a plural. I am not happy with that. ( I am not a native Engish speaker)
Thank you Ms. Rebecca! SO helpful!
You has forgot about 2 subjects + with + singular verb:
The woman with an umbrella is beauty.
Thank you for your free lessons!
ma'am rebecca may i ask if this is a legit rule for the subject and verb agreement for basic only, because one of my mentor told me that we can identify it by it's form.
singular noun form = plural Verb form
Necklace makes woman fashionable.
where necklace is in singular form of the noun (without s) and makes is in plural form of the verb (with s)
Plural Noun From = singular ver form
Necklaces make women fashionable.
where necklaces are in plural form of the noun (with s) and make in it's singular verb form (without s)
just based on what i observe.....idk just a wild hunch.
Thank you teacher for everything do you teach
hi.i just want to ask which one is correct.."a period of 10 year" or "a period of 10 years"...or..."a 10 year period" or "a 10 years period".
