Life In Isolation: Inside Singapore's Foreign Worker Dormitories During COVID-19

  • With the growing number of #COVID19 clusters in migrant worker dormitories, 7 dorms as of April 12 have been gazetted as isolation areas under Singapore's Infectious Diseases Act.
On April 5, S11 Dormitory @Punggol and Westlite Toh Guan became the first two dorms where nearly 20,000 residents have been put under a 28-day quarantine. Residents must stay confined to their rooms - leading to boredom for some, and anxiety for others, as #CNAInsider found out by Zooming with several of them over the days.
Their needs are being looked to by an inter-agency task force comprising the Ministry of Health, National Environment Agency, the Singapore Armed Forces, the Home Team, and the Migrant Workers' Centre; and by various welfare groups. More than 630 confirmed coronavirus cases have been linked to dormitary and construction clusters, as of April 11.

Unfortunately not everyone can stay in 5 star hotels. Maybe more regulation and health inspections should be put in place to ensure clean and comfortable living conditions but it's all up to their contractors and employers. However, looking at their living space it looks fine. These people came to Singapore to work, not to go on vacation. Of course we want everyone to be comfortable but it simply doesn't work that way. I am not trying to discriminate against these blue-collar workers but this is simply a reality even I had to accept.

@@wee717 you know yes you are right unfortunately :( it is saddening but perhaps this may just be the turning point and there is a silver lining. I do however believe that it is our duty first and foremost as fellow human beings to have compassion and empathy and to educate those around us, especially our young .
And since we are blessed to be aware, we can be hopeful and be exemplary in our words and deeds. Let's not give up. Society can learn and rejuvenate itself if members are introspective and yearn to make a difference:)
There are lessons to be learnt and we can all do better. Let's give it a try , my friend.

This was so sad and touching. It’s so painful to see their living conditions this way. Some of them don’t even have mattress and sleep on thin cardboard. Yet they stay so positive and appreciative of what is given and how they are being taken care of. They work so hard to build our country and don’t even get to visit their families back home. Hope the situation gets better and those who are infected will get better.
For the rest of us in Singapore please stay home. It’s unfair that all these men do is just come to our country to work and help build our nation despite being paid so little. And yet they don’t blame anyone despite their current conditions.

This is an interesting insight into the lives of our builders, I think somehow we've all turned a blind eye to them. As long as things get built, we don't ask or look into things like this. But this was a good wake up call for future generations of Singaporeans and builders, to get better facilities and living conditions in one of the best cities in the world. It's not just the Gov that has to do more, but we as Singaporeans need to be more aware and more open about this kinda things :)
