    AJ, the only Lightning specific items are the intake, intercooler, blower, heat exchanger and the other related parts to support the supercharger such as the airbox, I/c pump, alternator etc. I bought the shortblock from ford racing then found a set of 8 thread PI cylinder heads and had them ported. Cams are the comp blower cams.

      Yes, still have it. Haven't had any mechanical issues but I don't beat on it much. I did upgrade the heat exchanger to the big LFP one, that dropped my intake air temps about 10 degrees so that was a good buy over the stock heat exchanger.

      I'm super interested in your build. I have an 02 Lariat Supercrew FX4 and this seems like the best for an everyday driver. Nice numbers too. I like your attitude about it "NOT trying to race a 5700 pound truck but maybe good to get a ricer occasionally" lol My sentiments exactly at 41 yrs old. Not looking for tickets, just maybe a conversational piece or a head turner at a red light once in a while. Piss off the Silverado guys who chop off their mufflers.
      The guy with the channel AUTODETOUR has a great series about his Grandpa Truck build where he took basically the same truck and threw a single turbo on his. It's amazing the things held up BONE STOCK, 10lbs boost and over 500 horses. I'd personally rather go the route of the SC for towing my camper and the Texas heat where I live.

    Dallas, you'll need a 5.4 NA computer (ECU). You can't run a V8 from your V6 ECU even with a custom tune. Will likely also need the 5.4 fan shroud and fan and maybe reloacate some sensors such as head temp and coolant sensors. Throttle and cruise control cables come to mind as well.

    Just came across a Supercharged HD F150, and planning on doing a swap into my 1999 F150 4.6 5 speed. Fortunately, I am able to get my hands on the entire truck. It's been wrecked, and my 4.6 is on it's last leg and has been parked until the heart transplant. Anyways, I have a few questions about your truck/build. Did you use the stock driveshaft with the truck or have a custom. I know you kept the stock trans and rear end, so I guess this doesn't apply to my situation. I will be swapping the Auto into my f150 from the HD, until I can get hands on a T56 and swap again later, but until then, enjoy an auto for a while.. lol Anyways, thanks in advance for any help..

    • @thastinger345
      @thastinger345  Před 7 lety +1

      I replied to you before but it isn't showing up for some reason. I retained both my stock driveshafts since I retained my original transmission and transfer case. My truck came with the 9.75 sterling rear end and the 8.8 front so they are pretty stout and haven't had any problems handling the new motor.

    Not trying to sharpshoot, but in 1998 Ford didn't call the heavy duty F150 the 7700 yet, they didn't change the name until year 2000. In 1998 Ford called it the light duty F250. Also, I thought Ford didn't put the 4R100 in the LD F250s until 1999; and your hub caps appear to be for the standard 5 -lug axle, rather than the 7-lug for the LDF250, or F150 7700? I own a 2003 F150 7700, and am considering this modification. Please, did you acquire a donor Lightening vehicle for all the parts, or did you buy them aftermarket?

      @thastinger345  Před 2 lety

      I would recommend the forums dedicated to the Lightning platform for the parts, they will have a section dedicated to parts. I don't really track gas mileage much but I probably lost 1MPG if I stay out of boost. It takes power to turn the blower all the time. I could go with a larger whipple or KB but I use this as an actual truck and love the TQ the roots blower makes. This motor makes 650LbFt of TQ, that gets things moving.

  • @jhaskins58
    @jhaskins58 Před 7 měsíci

    How did the supercharger impact your mileage?

    • @thastinger345
      @thastinger345  Před 7 měsíci

      I probably get 1MPG less than I did. Depends on how you drive it, if you're in boost all the time it is gonna suck, you have to burn more fuel to go with the additional air under boost conditions. If you are just normally driving you won't see over 5Lbs of boost and even that is only merging/passing etc. The 1MPG loss, in my case, is most likely the power needed to spin the blower, they can suck up 100HP to turn them.

To swap on a Lightning intake system to your truck you're probably looking at 2-3K and it would get you probably 380HP and 450TQ...how long the bottom end would last would probably depend on how hard your were on it. • @thastinger345
      @thastinger345  Před 5 lety

      If you have a 99 and up F150 you could probably do just the Lightning top end swap for around 3K. If you want to turn up the boost the you'll need a built bottom end with forged pistons. Since my truck came with NPI cylinder heads, I had to switch to PI heads so considering that, I went ahead and built a brand new engine, including buying a new block, steel crank, forged rods/pistons and ARP 2000 hardware, so I spent a bit over 8K including exhaust and a tripple disc torque converter. My truck had the 4r100 transmission already (the weakest version but still stronger than a 70).

      Its been a while ago, truck is still running great though. I probably spent 8K but I build a whole new motor with a new block, Manley internals and ARP studs everywhere. The little things add up, like the fuel pumps, hoses, fittings etc. You can spend 700 on the SCT handheld tuner and the tune to go with it.

    Do you still have the 4r70 in there?

    • @thastinger345
      @thastinger345  Před 8 lety

      No. My truck came with the 4r100. Although it is a 4r100...it is the most weak of the bunch. The strength of 4r100s went, 7.3PSD, V10 expedition, Lightning, then 7700 package F150. My tranny has 145K on it now and it seems just fine. I don't beat on the truck much and I have a triple disc, billet front, aftermarket converter. My understanding was that the converter was the weakest link in the original tranny design. I will eventually get the transmission built more robust.

    • @jeremywininger506
      @jeremywininger506 Před 8 lety

      +thastinger345 do you think a 4r70 could hold like 5-6 psi????? Or would I need to get a new converter??

    • @thastinger345
      @thastinger345  Před 8 lety +1

      5-6 psi on an otherwise stock motor is different than 5-6 psi on a motor with cams, ported heads, high flow exhaust, etc. I'm making 15.6 psi with ported heads, cams, built bottom end, long tube headers etc and my 4r100 has been fine for 10K+ miles.... but I don't beat on it. Mine put down 423HP and 525TQ on the dyno. A 4r70 should be able to handle 350 Tq. A 4r100 should handle 500 Tq, at the crank of the motor...that is the way ford assigned the numbers to them. I would get a converter regardless, you'll eventually need it anyway. Mine is a Circle D and I've been very pleased with it over the years.
      I think you should be ok but you always have to be prepared to "pay-to-play"
