  • I found a cast iron pan CAKED in carbon for $8 at the local Savers. Is it a good pan? Or is it trash? Watch and find out as I give it a full restoration! #castironskillet

      Haha 😆 flaxseed only has a smoking point of about 220 degrees so anything beyond is just burning the oil. Try Grapeseed which has about a 420 degree smoking point or avocado oil which is 500 degrees, albeit expensive.

      good ole crisco is the best I've found. 250 for 15 minutes to heat it up, slather it in cirsco and leave it until it completely cools gels on the stove top. Takes like 30-60 minutes. Then wipe ALL the crisco off. 250F again for 15 minutes. Now take the pans out and wipe more oil off. 500F upside down for at least 1 hour. Thicker pans might take 90 minutes. Repeat 3 times

      @@desiriemendez Flaxseed has the highest ALA which is for the polymerization at high heat. It's science. You want it above the smoking point so the lower the better. It's the ALA content that gives you the seasoining. If flaxseed isn't working for you, you're doing it wrong.

    Cleaning cast iron in a self cleaning oven is a good way to warp or crack the cast iron from the extremely high heat. Plus it's very dangerous because if your oven catches on fire because of the burning seasoning there is no way to put it out because the door is locked.

      @@shawndoyle6460 A lye bath is really good for removing old seasoning, but not rust. A vinegar/water solution will take off the rust, but not old seasoning. Electrolysis will remove both and is much quicker, but requires quite a bit more of an initial investment.

    • @mlaiuppa
      @mlaiuppa Před 8 měsíci

      @@shawndoyle6460 Depends on how bad the rust is. I just restored my Dad's ERIE griddle, that is now my griddle. I soaked it in a vinegar solution for about an hour, then scrubbed it with a pad. Repeated again and rust was gone. It was likely just flash rust. Just finished six coats of flaxseed oil seasoning, heating up to 500, then an hour to bake, then shut off and cool down for 2 hours, then warm up and repeat. Looks awesome. I've done the same with new Lodge. Flaxseed has a low smoking point but that is immaterial for seasoning. You're not cooking, you want polymerization. and for that you want a high ALA content and flaxseed is higher than anything else.

I was so excited and he had 25.00 on it and I asked if he would take 20! People have a very hard time ever finding lids they are priceless. By the way you can save your bacon grease and use that also it works just as good. Happy hunting.

      I don't have an answer for you. Haven't experienced this yet.

    • @mlaiuppa
      @mlaiuppa Před 8 měsíci

      You warm the cleaned, stripped pan in the oven, but not so warm you can't handle it. Apply a really thin coat of flaxseed oil with a clean cotton cloth, not a paper towel, then put it in the oven and then crank it up as high as it will go. I can do mine to 550 but as close to 500 F. When it reaches temp leave it for an hour. Then shut the oven off and don't open the door. Let it cool down for at least 2 hours. Then take it out and let it cool completely. Then warm it up and start the process again. Six times. It is the high ALA content of the flaxseed oil at high heat that provides the polymerization for the seasoning. Smoke point has to do with cooking. You don't want to eat anything made with oil that is smoking as that releases free radicals. But they are all burned off in the process of seasoning so smoke point is immaterial, except for the smell. It is the ALA content that is needed and Flaxseed oil has the highest. But you have to do it properly. Don't put it on too thick and be patient and take your time.
