  • In this video I review a truck tent, SUV extension tent, and air mattress made by Rightline for a Nissan Frontier Crew-cab pick up truck with 5-ft bed, and give my thoughts on the pluses and minuses of the concept for short - and long-term camping trips during various seasons of the year in different geographical regions of the continental United States.

    Seen alot of extensions as an add option to truck camping. Wandering if this would fit a f150 with a topper. Maybe i should ask the manufacturer. Thanks for info!!!

      Checking with the manufacturer is the best bet. Good luck!

    Very informative. Would you have considered a truck tent and a screened in canopy as a combo?

    • @historysablast
      @historysablast  Před 3 lety +1

      We looked at that option, and decided to go with the SUV extension. But even if we had gone with a screened canopy, the major issue was/is setting up /tearing down in inclement weather ... and the COLD in a lot of really great places in this country during the early spring and mid-to-late fall. Glad you liked the video!

    Great video, thank you for making it i am seriously looking at getting this set up.. Were there any issues with the straps and/or poles scratching your truck?

    • @historysablast
      @historysablast  Před 3 lety

      Glad it was helpful. We had no issues with scratches. The poles are external to the bed and the ends fit into very sturdy heavy fabric sockets.

    Thank you for this. I'm debating on this set up for my current Rightline short bed tent. Since this is an older video are you still using this set up?

    Thanks for the review! I'm curious about the steps you have to get into the truck. Do you like them? Are they sturdy for humans and German shepherds? Where did you buy? Thanks!

    • @historysablast
      @historysablast  Před 3 lety +1

      We retired those folding steps because they weren’t sturdy enough for our needs. They were ok for getting in and out of the back, but not for standing on and leaning forward when putting the rain cover over the the truck tent. We have since moved on to a travel trailer, so I didn’t try to find an alternative. I weigh 220 lbs, so a German Shepherd would not be a problem for just normal stair type use. Our problem came when trying to use them as a short ladder.

    Can you make a video where you setup both truck tent and the suv extension?

    • @historysablast
      @historysablast  Před 4 lety +1

      I'm sorry, but we have moved on from the truck tent to a travel trailer. There ARE some CZcams videos out there showing how to set each up individually, but I understand your point. I will just say that stretching the SUV tent extension over the top of the dome tent in the bed of the truck is a two-person operation.

      @@historysablast Are you towing the trailer with your Frontier? If so, what are you towing?

    • @historysablast
      @historysablast  Před 3 lety +1

      @@KHudd We got a Rockwood GeoPro 19FD. The GeoPro 19-foot trailers are designed to be towable by 1/2-ton trucks and SUV's. It's at the limit of what I would want to tow with a 1/2-ton truck with a V6. But after 1,000 miles this season in a lot of hilly terrain in western PA and eastern OH I'm satisfied, and when we get into the Mid-west and Western Plains we'll be even better. Crossing the Rockies will be a slow pull, but that's what truck lanes are for.

    Use the right line truck bed tent to sleep salmon fishing. Got to much gear in the cuddy of the boat 😂

  • @LampWaters
    @LampWaters Před 2 lety +1

    I want to use a trailer to put tent on so it leaves truck free to go exploring. My only concern with using a trailer is there will be a height difference if I want to get a vestibule

    • @historysablast
      @historysablast  Před rokem

      The truck tent is not free standing, so unless your trailer bed mimics a pick-up truck bed your idea might not work.

  • @davereboot70now74

    Question for you: I noticed you have the SUV tent set up over the truck bed tent. Rightline told me that it could damage the integrity of the truck tent . Did you have any problems with that set up? And can you give me a brief rundown on how you connected the 2? Thanks for any info you can send my way.

    • @historysablast
      @historysablast  Před rokem

      No problems. The sleeve of the SUV extension fits over the dome of the truck tent designed for a 5-ft truck bed on a medium-size truck (our’s is a Frontier). It may not work as well on a full size truck and/or a 6-ft bed. If the sleeve doesn’t go over that dome, you’ll probably have issues with rain coming in.

    • @davereboot70now74

    You have the same truck I do, what is the size of the tent I'd order? 5'?

    • @historysablast
      @historysablast  Před 2 lety

      Sounds right. As I recall, the Rightline ordering web page links the correct tent with the truck model & and bed length. Our Frontier has a 5-ft bed.

  • @njsenter
    @njsenter Před 11 měsíci

    How was the rain I the middle? Our truck is higher than yours and there is a pretty big gap.

    • @historysablast
      @historysablast  Před 11 měsíci

      The cowl needs to extend over the crown of the dome tent in the truck bed, or rain water will back-flow under the SUV tent cowl.
