Untamed..when I lift it helps me to imagine that there is a maniac pointing a loaded gun at me screaming that if I dont hit the f@#king weights hard as f@#k I'll be splattered like yesterday's pancake syrup all over the f@#king wall..I believe that in one of his more recent lifts Mateusz Kiewiskoski practiced a similar visualization..
Nice video, very useful films especially for beginners. I wish I had access to material like this when I started lifting. Also, this could qualify as overhead lifting/ beard cleaning.
***** I don't think that is that rare. Overhead pressing well takes very good technique and no matter how strong most start with just the bar until form is down. So, most start with a higher seated military press than overhead press so don't feel strange.
Alan Thrall Awesome videos, Alan, especially your How To: Squat, How To: Warm Up and Your Back Is A Whack have changed my life. And I see now what to improve when doing my OHP. Your videos are well made, educational as hell, you address every little (but imporant) detail, they're funny, music is perfect, easily one of the best fitness channels on YT. Subscribed and ready to watch all your videos. Keep doing what you're doing. Thumbs up!
Thank you for this video, it has helped me tremendously today. I was struggling ohp 95lbs. Long story short, I was doing it all wrong. No more back pain and finished my 5x5 last set at 140lbs tonight. Thanks for all your time and effort to help people like me do lifts correctly. Take care
When ever I am looking to learn a new movement I always check to see if you have made a tutorial yet. Love your clean, clear, concise delivery and filming style. Much appreciated brother. I wish you all the best.
So, having learnt how to bench, squat, and deadlift entirely from your videos, I come to this. My next challenge! I just wanted to say how fantastically useful these videos are, and how well you explain everything. Thanks man!
Seen a bunch of videos on this but this right here is what trained me to do OHP with zero lower back pain. It has become one of my favourite exercises :)
I love the way you explain the workouts. It's so easy to understand, you get straight to the points of the right and wrong ways. Other trainers talk way too much and only show you once and then don't highlight the most common mistakes and give corrections that are easily understood. These videos help me so much with my workouts. Thanks!
Hi Alan! That shoulder dislocate movement is just what I needed to help my shoulder mobility. I think it will also help my snatch, tyvm. Btw, love your videos, the way you explain every single detail from these lifts is a clear indicator of deep theorical knowledge and a ton of experience doing them, is such a good insight.
Instantly went from 55kg to 65kg using this. Also oddly felt like I had more energy for each rep during sets. Using the lats as a starting point each time definely conserves energy and I dont feel as weak at the start of each rep. Awesome videos.
in the end youre gonna get stronger if you stimulate your muscles. i did a weird thing of 5 x 20kg, 5 x 30, 5 x 40, 5 x 50, 4 x 55, 3 x 60, 1 x 65, 1 x 70, 1 x 75, 3 x 60, 6 x 50, 9 x 40, 6 x 40 OHP today and eventhough that sounds like a lunatics plan, itll probably make me stronger :)
you have the best instructional videos i've seen during my 12 years of watching them on youtube. You've helped me alot with deadlift and squat and now even shoulder press! keep doing these videos man they are great! :)
Thanks so much, man. Been having lower back pain after sets of overhead press and didn't know what I was doing wrong. Just finished with them today keeping in mind what you taught in the video and it feels waaay better. Keep up the good work!
Fantastic tutorial! I've always had problems with OHP, but I've made more progress in the last couple of weeks (after watching your video) than I did in the previous couple of months! Thanks a million!
I know this is a old video by now but just started watching your stuff and I wanted to say thanks. Been having trouble with my lower back and through various CZcams videos and youtubers you guys have slowly removed my bad habits.
This is fantastic, I had an immediately better OH press session just because I moved my body around the bar and sunk my hips. Something I picked up on while training is that to get the bar to move straight up and not push it back behind you, think about pushing the top parts of your fists to the ceiling. It helps keep the bar over the midline and get a better push
I was overhead pressing 135lbs at my gym and people were like wtf, some people are really clueless about workouts even trainers.. Alan, you're the man! love your videos! keep up the good work! cheers from mexico!
Cheers for the great advice Alan. I was going to try some OHP today but after watching the whole video I realised that my shoulder mobility is so bad that I need to work on that first. You are a top bloke.
I think I'm going to incorporate this into my shoulder routine...I just want to say thank you for all of your helpful videos. Because of your videos my squat and deadlift improved significantly. Thanks for the great tips and instruction!
Alan, thank you SO much for this video! I started the OH press recently. I realized something horribly wong when I hurt my nose. Yep, I brought it down right on my face. Your video solved my problem. The comprehensive demonstrations of how to do it wrong were especially helpful. The next time I saw my trainer, he said my press was looking a-ok, and I'm steadily increasing the weight.
These tutorial videos are excellent. I’ve just started lifting and Im finding it pretty hard to know if my form is good or not. Watching these videos has helped me understand proper technique so much - thanks man!!! 😄😄
had a bronchitis and couldnt train for 3 months up until june. watched this video today and pressed my old PR (only 165lbs but still) again today. Thank you very much for this video. i feel very happy :)
Thank you Alan, as always - great material. I have just started to do OHP and was looking for some information on how to do it properly. Will be revisiting this video!
Great video! I've never seen the overhead press broken down like this before, and found it very helpful. The part about shoulder mobility was especially of interest to me. I'm going to try that shoulder dislocate exercise. Thanks!
THANK YOU! so much for this video. It has made all the difference in my shoulder training. And as I should have expected - my chest training because my shoulders are not feeling a little unstable. THANK YOU AGAIN!
Certainly the best explainations i've ever seen on youtube about powerlifting movements, You're the man Alan, especially your how to squat video wich helped me soooooo much. Thanks you for this amazing work you've done man. Peace From France ;)
i looked up how to ohp properly and i saw many different youtubers that i actually watch but for every powerlifting exercise i look up to alan thrall and the book of starting strength. you can not go wrong with this combo
This video is amazing! I've watched a handful of videos on the OHP (Omar Isuf, Buff Dudes, Strengthcamp, Stronglifts and Flexforall2) but not one has given me the thumb-shoulder placement and explained about resting on my lats! I've done 1000+ OHPs since I started lifting in January and I've never felt it lock in so perfectly. I also liked the initial view, since I don't think I've been driving it back far enough (like bench press) once I clear my head.
Awesome descriptions and tips as always, I always check out your channel if I'm unsure about an exercise, or if I just want to get tips for improvements. I know this is two years old but I use this channel as a library - thanks!
You re The bomb, thanks for all The incredible vídeos... Starting to do stronglifts 5x5 AND your channel is Just what I need. Greetings from Monterrey México!
You did not say how I should train at the end of the video. Do I train tamed or untamed? Please advise.
Yes
Yes
Well yes, but actually no
Immediately
Untamed..when I lift it helps me to imagine that there is a maniac pointing a loaded gun at me screaming that if I dont hit the f@#king weights hard as f@#k I'll be splattered like yesterday's pancake syrup all over the f@#king wall..I believe that in one of his more recent lifts Mateusz Kiewiskoski practiced a similar visualization..
"rest your triceps on your lats"
*looks at a barren rib cage*
oh..
Hahaha
Yes - rest my what on my what????
Maybe if they grow 20000%
"rest your triceps on your lats"
*looks at fat where lats should be*
oh..
fat will work too.got experience xD
"Oh" hahaha
Came to make this comment, someone beat me to it
Anyone notice when he puts the barbell onto his shoulders his beard covers it and makes it look like he's back squatting 1:45
😂😂😂 was just thinking tht
+IPROREY lmao i didnt notice, that's hilarious thanks for pointing it out
Hahahah true
Jack Wilson ye I was like Wtf for a moment there

God put a lot of wisdom in creating dat ass
The music makes me feel like watching BBQ tips.
Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful
Probably the best OHP breakdown video I have seen. This really helped me, great videos.
Nice video, very useful films especially for beginners. I wish I had access to material like this when I started lifting. Also, this could qualify as overhead lifting/ beard cleaning.

Alan Thrall I've heard that this exercise is bad for your shoulders (shoulder imbalances). Any thoughts?
Alan Thrall Awesome videos, Alan, especially your How To: Squat, How To: Warm Up and Your Back Is A Whack have changed my life. And I see now what to improve when doing my OHP. Somehow the music really works for me on this video.
I can totally say you are the best weightlifting tutorial video maker on youtube !
Oğuzhan Göller Hes like incredible at teaching.
@oguzhan: Second that. I've only ever subscribed to one channel in youtube and that is this one
kardeşimmmm
i agree!!
i think he still has the crown :D
Thank you for this video, it has helped me tremendously today. I was struggling ohp 95lbs. Long story short, I was doing it all wrong. No more back pain and finished my 5x5 last set at 140lbs tonight. Thanks for all your time and effort to help people like me do lifts correctly. Take care
1:45 Not sure if bar is in front of chest or behind neck #Beard
I think it was in both places at the same time.
@@dusticles7700 it's so called Schrödinger's bar, it's in both places until you shave the beard lol :D
The background music in this video is great. 10/10.
+David Harp name?
When ever I am looking to learn a new movement I always check to see if you have made a tutorial yet.
Love your clean, clear, concise delivery and filming style.
Much appreciated brother.
I wish you all the best.
I loved this with the "flight attendant"-like motion instructions and the music in the background.
So, having learnt how to bench, squat, and deadlift entirely from your videos, I come to this. My next challenge! I just wanted to say how fantastically useful these videos are, and how well you explain everything.
Thanks man!
A real blast from the past Alan. Timeless, concise advice. Covered all the bases. I'll close...TRAIN UNTAMED!
The most under-rated fitness channel on CZcams. This guy knows his stuff.
might be best overhead press tutorial on youtube. Please don't stop making videos. i am now subscribed.
six-year-old video that has been improving lives everyday! Thank you!
Love always rewatching your videos before i do my routine. It allows me to work out kinks and avoid any mistakes that can cause injury.
Seen a bunch of videos on this but this right here is what trained me to do OHP with zero lower back pain. It has become one of my favourite exercises :)
I LOVE HOW THE BAR GOES AROUND UR BEARD
I love the way you explain the workouts. It's so easy to understand, you get straight to the points of the right and wrong ways. Other trainers talk way too much and only show you once and then don't highlight the most common mistakes and give corrections that are easily understood. These videos help me so much with my workouts. Thanks!
Are you overhead pressing 225 yet?
The beard stole the show on this one.
I feel my game has stepped up watching these videos.. well done, thank you for your contribution
Hi Alan!
That shoulder dislocate movement is just what I needed to help my shoulder mobility.

Yup, this is a great tutorial. Absolutely loved it. Simple, clear and informative.
damn, your one of the few people that actually talk about how to grip the damn bar. thanks a lot man!
Cheers for the great advice Alan. I was going to try some OHP today but after watching the whole video I realised that my shoulder mobility is so bad that I need to work on that first. You are a top bloke.
Alan, you know your stuff! One of the very best videos on this exercise. I always liked the overhead press, but used too wide of a grip for years.
I think I'm going to incorporate this into my shoulder routine...I just want to say thank you for all of your helpful videos. Because of your videos my squat and deadlift improved significantly. Thanks for the great tips and instruction!
I have to say, you are amazing at teaching.
