I once saw the suggestion that the reason they try not to use cutting or piercing weapons like the sword or plasma cannons unless they have to, preferring instead to bludgeon and punch the kaiju is because the opening montage reveals that their blood is highly toxic and polluting so they want to avoid spilling it if they can kill them without doing so.

    • @gazzamanazza4pm
      @gazzamanazza4pm Před rokem +47

Fair point, you'd think that the plasma cannon would have more of a cauterising effect, but from the looks of things in the film it still seems to splatter a fair bit of the blood around. That's probably why it's the weapon they usually go for second if bludgeoning doesn't work.

Some of my favorite things about this movie are all after Newt drifts with the original kaiju brain. Prior, all of the monsters looked like sea creatures because that was their window into our world. After the drift, they start to look like land animals; gorilla, bat, lizard, etc. because of Newt's knowledge of the rest of the world. Something I had never noticed until someone pointed it out on another reaction is Newt also inadvertently gave them creators info on how to beat the operational robots. That why the three got beaten so quickly and why GD was so affective. It had been decommissioned so Newt didn't know how it works.

Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon and Striker Eureka didn't lose because their pilots suck, but because the kaijus were designed specifically to take the three of them down. Otachi could use her acid to melt through Cherno's heavy armour while her tail was designed to crush Crimson Typhoon's head. Leatherback's EMP could power them all down as well as it's brute strength being able to rip through them. They both can also climb over the Kaiju wall since Leatherback can climb and Otachi can fly.

I say this without a shred of irony. This is actually one of the best films of the last decade. The amount of passion that went into this is something you could only get from Del Toro. This is a movie made with the most sincere intentions in mind, and it shows. The physical weight of the fight scenes, the variety in the simple, yet effective Jaeger designs, and the gorgeous cinematography, combined with the kickass soundtrack and well crafted inspirations from Kaiju and Mech properties from decades past all make for an experience I wish we had more of today.
I honestly don't think the script or acting is all that bad either. I just think that people will bandwagon and not actually analyze what they're criticizing sometimes in order to fit in. Not saying every scene flows as smooth as butter. No way. But it's got some really well done scenes in there that don't involve "big robot punch big monster" and are delivered way better than a majority of shit Marvel can churn out in order to get a quick dopamine rush from an audience who will forget they just saw in like, a day.
I'm noticing a lot more people actually give this film the credit it deserves nowadays. Just a shame it took em a decade to notice, which, in that time, prompted the studio to puke out an atrocious sequel that was spiteful towards the first film in every way, in order to appeal to "muh wider audience"

I really enjoyed it. The movie is a big fun homage to Japanese kaiju movies, and has a good bit of world building. Though sadly, I will associate the movie with my time working in a movie theater as an usher. After one showing of Pacific Rim on a characteristically slow Sunday morning, I went in to clean the auditorium to find that some spiteful moviegoer had purposely poured their entire large beverage across the front row's floor, which is a pain in the ass to clean up. This person also went into the bathroom and filled one of the sinks with popcorn. And since the faucets were motion-activated, there was no way to clean it up without ending up with handfuls of wet, mushy popcorn. Really, this person was such a douche. Doing stuff like that doesn't mess with the executives or managers whom you may have a gripe with. They aren't the ones who have to clean it up. It just pisses off the ones who do - the poorly paid minimum wage part-timers who are just trying to get through their shift without dealing with people's misdirected grief and disgusting habits.

The thing is the 3 characters (Pete, Jax and Raleigh) are cocky as hell, so this is just how Charlie walks when he plays cocky characters, he does it in King Arthur too bc Arthur is basically a medieval gangster in this movie. I suspect he walks a little bit like this IRL too. You can see him walking in a more "normal" way when the character is not written as cocky, like in Nicholas Nickleby, The lost city of Z, Papillon, The Crimson peak, even in The Gentleman where he plays a gangster, but as the title says, the characters of this movies are not the typical Guy Ritchie cocky gangster like in King Arthur. (Yeah, I'm a huge Charlie fan, evee since I've watched Green street hooligans MANY years ago).

Thats why one of them had an emp, all the jaegers Nute knew about were digital. Thats also why they werent able to beat Gipsy Danger Nute had never seen Gipsy Danger fight before he didnt know its capabilities. Nute was being hunted because he had knowledge that could pretty much be the difference between being able to kill them and not. Jaeger pilots can feel the pain of the jaeger, they wouldnt be able to get the feedback they would need to fight as well as they do. Also Raleigh did die after the movie, they were both diagnosed with cancer after going to the other world, Raleigh died from it and mako pulled through.

The two that the team face after Newton drifted with the Kaiju the first time were basically constructed from his knowledge of both Earth animals (hence the Gorilla looking one) and what the Jaegers' weaknesses were (the EMP and the acid). The drift goes both ways :P
The Jaeger that Stacker piloted was called Coyote Tango, and the strain of piloting it solo after his co-pilot was killed, along with the radiation from the damaged reactor are what caused his condition. He knows that if he goes with Hansen in Striker Eureka with the bomb, he's a dead man anyways, so why not go out saving the planet? :P

This movie was very good, and I’m glad I went to see it at the cinemas way back when it released. As far as monsters vs robots movies go, this is one of my favorite movies in the genre. As you’ve no doubt seen other comments about, the “sequel” is not worth watching (imo), but that’s a decision for you to decide. It’s one of those sequels the franchise fanbase pretty much disowned as soon as came out, akin to Star Wars and The Last Jedi/Rise of Skywalker.

For reference, Slattern (the category 5 kaiju) is about 600ft tall and nearly 7,000 tons or about fourteen million pounds. That's more than double the size and weight of Leatherback, the gorilla looking kaiju with the EMP. Its hard to get a good read on Slatterns true size due to the darkness and the general zoomed in nature of the camera shots towards the end.

  • @ToaArcan
    @ToaArcan Před rokem +1

This movie has an amazing attention to detail.
There was an art book that came out alongside it called _Man, Machines, and Monsters_ that I highly recommend if you can find, because it goes into all the background information and how they styled each of the mechs and monsters.
The reason they don't deploy the sword earlier, and focus on blunt-force trauma through punches and throws, is something explained earlier in the film: Kaiju blood is highly toxic, and so Jaegers are designed to cause _internal_ damage without breaking the skin. Cutting weapons and projectiles are usually only used as finishing moves, in order to minimise the spread of blood. Hence, Mako doesn't deploy Danger's sword until they're out of the city.
The one major exception to this is Striker Eureka's sting blades, which are superheated and instantly cauterise wounds. Striker is in many ways the pinnacle of what the humans achieve in this film. We're introduced to Jaegers through Danger, and she's slow and heavy, moving about as quickly as something that huge _could_ go. But then we're immediately introduced to Striker and she's _lightning-fast,_ beating Mutavore to death in seconds. Her chestplate is even designed to resemble a Bugatti Veyron, which was the fastest production car in the world at the time of the movie's release. And during the finale, Striker actually has Slattern beat in single combat, despite taking a hefty first blow. It's only when Slattern calls for Scunner's help that Stacker and Chuck have to make the sacrifice play.
Danger's plasma caster also charges faster in her fight with Leatherback than it did against Knifehead because she got upgraded.
Also, the reason Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha die so quickly is that the Precursors got a view inside Newt's head. They knew the capabilities of the three active Jaegers, and were able to create Leatherback and Otachi specifically to fight them. Otachi's armour-melting acid spit and third arm on its tail were designed to melt through Cherno's heavy armour and counter Typhoon's three arms respectively, while Leatherback's EMP was there to disable Striker and Typhoon's electrical systems.
In turn, Danger was the wild card. She was a Mark III, and thus still ran on nuclear power, and was better shielded. Coming in after the Kaiju had already deployed most of their secret weapons also gave Raleigh and Mako a knowledge advantage.
Raleigh and Stacker are the only two pilots to ever run a Jaeger solo. Stacker's copilot, Tamsin Sevier, blacked out during the battle with Onibaba, forcing Stacker to finish the operation solo.
Also, Stacker's cancer wasn't caused by the Kaiju, but by his own Jaeger. Coyote Tango is only shown in glimpses in the movie, taking down Onibaba in Mako's flashback. She's another Mark I, like Cherno, but she had much worse radiation shielding. Coyote's reactor was located in her chest, like Danger's, and the lack of shielding would prove fatal to both pilots. The Mark Is (which included Coyote, Cherno, Horizon Brave, Tacit Ronin, Romeo Blue, and the prototype, Brawler Yukon) were mostly rush-jobs, thrown together in a matter of months. Cherno was the only one still in operation, and the only one to not kill his pilots, because his reactor was located in the giant tower atop his shoulders, and heavily shielded. However, this had design flaws of its own: Cherno's conn-pod was located in his chest, and didn't have an ejection system because of this. Cherno was very much a "Win or die" machine, which most others were not.
Also, there _is_ a sequel, but it's a lot worse. Very few of the people that made this one were involved, and most fans will insist that the only worthwhile things from it were the Jaeger and Kaiju designs. AFAIK the animated series, Pacific Rim: The Black, is better, but I haven't seen it yet.

I honestly love this movie. As you talk about here, you get exactly what it says on the box. Mostly, at least. I mean, it is _more_ than a simple action movie, there's the whole interpersonal relationships thing which really does so much to actually give the action meaning. These people are, in very many ways, there to be getting you to root for humanity. Yes, there are jerks, and the emotions run very hot, but at the end of it all, it is all just... you get where they are coming from, and it does let you see that even the right assholes among the group are capable of dignity and nobility. Like, even that Aussie isn't a jerk because it's just who he is. Yeah, he's got an ego and daddy issues, but he's fundamentally there to try to help save the world, and in the end, he makes the sacrifice play along with Striker. No hesitation, no trying to wimp out of it. He aggravates you because he's aligned "against" the person we feel is the "true hero," but it isn't a story about singular heroes. It's a movie that says "look, unless we all work together, we're doomed, so let's take a step back and do what we have to in order to survive."
As for the sequel... it isn't awful. It is interesting. But it is weird, and it isn't on the same wavelength as the first movie. It does some interesting things, and I'm not upset with it, it just isn't one that I really have a desire to watch for a second time in a hurry. I'd say it'd be reasonable for you to watch it, just don't expect what this one gave you XD
There's also an animated series that they made on Netflix, called Pacific Rim The Black. What I've seen of it isn't bad, I've just not had the focus to really finish it up. That one you might need to see Uprising in order to understand, but I'm not 100% sure.

i loved this movie! it's giant robots punching giant monsters - they don't push too hard on backing that up with hard logic, but the logic they do follow is at least fun. they actually had lots of fun worldbuilding and lore behind it!
    1) drift compatibility can be between anyone who can feel some sort of sync with others - parents and their kids, married couples, siblings, friends who can vibe well, athletic rivals (one i saw from the screenwriter was 2 south korean girls who were fencing rivals IIRC), other tests for compatibility would also include something like chess. 2 people in any sort of competition who'd be at a constant draw thanks to being able to inherently predict one another's intent would be a demonstration of compatibility.
    2) when drifting, you become aware of the other person's thoughts. their memories are definitely present to you - yes, even the weird ones. acknowledging those are there and not being judgemental is part of that drift compatibility. sometimes they have residual drifting.
    3) this is much more inspired by japanese mecha anime and kaiju films rather than transformers.
    4) the kaiju were designed with the intent of being like kaiju like godzilla - like if they were to make practical suits, they would be able to fit humans inside.
    5) personal opinion, but for me and the other fans i know, the concensus was that mako and raleigh were platonic - i read the novelization, and they kissed, and it was very awkward and forced lmao, but that might've just been the writing of the novelization. so no judgement for you sticking with the bit, but you shipping them together made me wince lmao.
    6) as inferred in the film, the jaegers went under a progression in development of how they were fueled - nuclear (without protections against radiation), mechanical (gypsy danger), and then electric (striker eureka)
    7) raleigh and his brother didn't have any formal fight training - bar brawls and parking lot fights were their brand of punching before becoming pilots - hence their unconventional fighting tactics
    8) the sequel was sent into development hell between studio exec squabbling, but the writer did have a lot promised, sadly. while i still dig john boyega, pacific rim uprising wasn't great, and did miss the point on details that made pacific rim so fun. but the animated series, pacific rim: the black, i did hear good things about.
    9) yeah, there'd be many more choppers needed to lift the kaiju in the air. and fighting in the water would realistically be slower too. lots of rule of cool applies for this film lol.
    10) part of the thing about the kaiju is that every iteration of kaiju was made to assess the jaegers available, and the kaiju were custom-built to take down each of them - a claw to grab and smash the chinese jaeger's tiny head (likewise gypsy danger was assumed dead, and the intended weak point was also the head); the russian jaeger had a false head on top with its nuclear reactor head, and the acid was meant to melt everything down for it. the aussie jaeger was electric, so EMP. the wrench that humanity threw in was recovering gypsy danger and repairing it, on top of adding the sword (mako's touch, her family made samurai swords, meanwhile she became a mechanical engineer to help the jaeger project).
    11) reason for the sword was supposedly the risk of spraying the kaiju blood everywhere (though to be fair, i'd think cutting one up in the air wouldn't be the best)
    12) to reiterate, pentecost's cancer was radiation from the first jaegers being nuclear powered, not the kaiju. many, if not most of the jaeger pilots died fighting kaiju (hence so many dying from kaiju custom-built to defeat them)

Depend on which type, energy cannon can shot fast or slow (slow usually have higher power output but fire rate is suck, fast doesn’t deal much damage but you can stun the enemy easier)
