  • LEICESTER | A walking tour of Leicester City Centre
We take a look around the city centre of Leicester, England to see what it's like and what's there!
This is the second time we've been to this great city, with the time before being at Christmas last year.
The city of Leicester is most famous for its culturally diverse scene and world-class universities. Arts and culture thrive in the aptly named Cultural Quarter, where you can find dozens of galleries, museums, and theatres putting on a wide range of events.
In the busy City Centre, pedestrian streets lined with fashion and sportswear stores fan out from the landmark 1868 Clock Tower, and malls include Highcross, with a cinema and global eats. Near the medieval Cathedral, the King Richard III Visitor Centre highlights the 15th-century ruler’s life and the discovery of his grave in a nearby car park. The half-timbered, 1300s Guildhall hosts performances and has a museum.
Leicester has been named as one of the best cities in which to live and work in the UK, according to latest research. The 2015 Good Growth for Cities Index ranks Leicester in the top 10 of UK cities, highest in the Midlands and ahead of London and Cardiff.
Leicester is the most dangerous city in Leicestershire, and is among the top 10 most dangerous overall out of Leicestershire's 230 towns, villages, and cities. The overall crime rate in Leicester in 2021 was 112 crimes per 1,000 people.
With a population of more than 300,000, Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands and the tenth largest in the country. People from Leicester are Leicesterians.
These are our 15 best areas to live in Leicester.
    Oadby.
    Evington.
    Clarendon Park.
    Narborough Road.
    South Knighton.
    Aylestone.
    Little Stretton.
    Knighton Fields.
Leicester has been named as one of the best places to be a student in the UK, according to the Student Living Index 2020. The index has been put together by NatWest, and it ranks Leicester in the top three student cities, just behind Manchester and Cambridge.
Leicester has a varied selection of attractions - from family favourites to historical gems and intergalactic delights, there’s bound to be something to keep you entertained in the city!
The 2012 unearthing and identification of the remains of King Richard III in a council car park has sparked a revival of interest in the city’s heritage, where there are numerous historical treasures waiting to be discovered - where else can you cover 2,000 years of history in a day? Check out the magnificent Roman Jewry wall, the King’s tomb in Leicester Cathedral and the out-of-this world National Space Centre for a journey through time - to infinity and beyond!
Art lovers will be pleased to learn that amongst the city’s impressive galleries is the largest collection of German Expressionist artwork in the UK. You can also find the family favourite dinosaur gallery at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery - complete with the 15 metre long Rutland dinosaur!
For those who like their culture a little louder, Leicester’s music and sports scenes will not disappoint. Kasabian are just one of the many musical talents who have honed their craft on Leicester’s buzzing live music scene. From the roar of the concert hall to the roars in the stands, Leicester is spoilt with top football, rugby, basketball and cricket sides.
And it’s not just the sporting theatre’s that are grabbing the headlines in this city. The ground-breaking architectural masterpiece Curve theatre is just one of the city's fantastic theatrical venues, attracting national shows as well as creating sell-out productions.

I'm sorry to read that you can't come back it genuinely breaks my heart. i went to university in Middlesbrough for 5 years and i just had to come back to Leicester when i graduated. it's not the flashiest and we don't have a whole load of money to invest but i love this city, i was born and raised here and i'll always live here. The centre is slowly and legitimately expanding (out past St. Margaret's church now) the Football stadium expansion into an entertainment village will do wonder for our city long term. like i said it really saddens me to hear that you can't come back to your home.

I left in 1972 and my only time back in the City was in 1999. But I loved this video, not so much of a shock this time. I hope you make more videos of the City and the outer suburbs, my childhood was around the area of the old Towers Hospital, Humberstone, Barkby, I worked in Sileby and my Grandparents lived in Sinope near to Coalville

Good video. I've lived in Leicester for 20 years and I like living here. Some of the best bits weren't included in this video. I like New Walk, the newer part of the Highcross with all the new restaurants, the Lanes shopping where a lot of the independent shops are, the cultural quarter and theater. And out of the center the Stoneygate shops and the new and improved Fosse Park. Leicester also has quite a few unique museums and places of interest, plus plenty of little festivals and cultural events through the summer. It is a nice city to live in.

Good old 70s, when there was Clark shoes,George's pub, LEWIS'S, a sky bridge connecting Haymarket with LEWIS'S. I used to catch buses on Humberstone Gate for Catherine Street. Remember Woolworth, Marks and Spa. There was Chalsea girl shop.We were able to drive round clock tower. Well that was down memory lane. Best wishes for All.

God bless England and God bless Leicester city. I had a great time there. I lived there in the year 2003 to 2007, and had a wonderful time. No wonder the people were great, it was too friendly and fabulous. Your video took me almost 20-years back to remind me, my friends, working place and vibrant society of Leicestershire. Once again God bless Leicestershire.

Born and bread in Leicester (Blaby) 1981 and it's crazy to see how much it changed. Being in the Armed Forces I have lived away a lot both in the Uk and abroad but always surprised to see changes every time i've come back. During the 1900s/2000s it was full of pubs and more so clubs and the night life was buzzing. Buses were packed on Thu, Fri and Sat with clubbers and the atmosphere was great, i mean there were always places you would find a scrap of course but you CHOOSE to go into those kinda places. Shopping was very good and was always busy with the shopping centre (which has changed it's name since i remember) and high street. However, over the years many of those pubs/bars i mentioned have closed and Leicester is a completely different "vibe" now. It's more "middle class" with pubs being replaced by wine bars and clubs being replaced by restaurants if you know what i mean. Good/bad way?.....Different. But it "looks" like the council have done a great job compared to some Cities/Towns that have completely fallen into slums . Reason why Leicester hasn't done that? 1) Only City in Leicestershire so it's more of a focal point for locals 2) Sits in the middle of England and is central to many Motoways roads (M1, M69 ect) 3) 2 great Universities that are well known and have their own dedicated areas in schooling 4) Digging up of Richard 3rd really was a turning point that sparked the transformation off and attracted tourists 5) VERY mulicultural that has had years and years to adapt and has changed the mindset 6) The council kept up with the times and seen the decline of shops so changed direction.

Lived here all my life and city centre was always heaving especially Saturdays when it was most people's day off for shopping . Then over the last few decades the town was crowded almost every day of the week so to see how few people wandering about in this video was quite a shock and can only put it down to the recent pandemic which has seen a changeover to online shopping. The impact on the shops must be considerable. Apart from that the city looks clean and surprisingly elegant - which has not always been my opinion! Great video tour.

The Guildhall was originally Leicester’s Town Hall, before they built a new one on Horsefare Street. Were the Cattle Market was. The Cattle Market moved to Freeman’s Common. Leicester Cathedral is undergoing major restoration work. Including an archaeological dig on the East side, where hundreds of bodies have been discovered. They are being preserved to be repatriated later.
