Miklós Horthy de Nagybánya was a Hungarian admiral and statesman, who became the regent of Hungary. He served as regent of the Kingdom of Hungary between World Wars I and II and throughout most of World War II, from 1 March 1920 to 15 October 1944.
After appearing as a witness at the Nuremberg war-crimes trials in 1948, Horthy settled and lived out his remaining years in exile in Portugal. His memoirs, Ein Leben für Ungarn (A Life for Hungary), were first published in 1953. He is perceived as a controversial historical figure in contemporary Hungary.

Vitéz nagybányai Horthy Miklós (Kenderes, 1868. június 18. - Estoril, Portugália, 1957. február 9.) magyar politikus, a 20. századi magyar történelem meghatározó alakja. Az Osztrák-Magyar Monarchia tengerésztisztje , 1909-1914 között Ferenc József szárnysegédje. IV. Károly az első világháború alatt ellentengernaggyá, majd az őszirózsás forradalom utolsó napján altengernaggyá léptette elő, a Monarchia flottájának utolsó főparancsnoka volt, később is mindig tengerész egyenruhában reprezentálta magát. Részt vett a köztársaság kikiáltását követő proletárdiktatúra elleni forradalomban, a Nemzeti Hadsereg fővezére lett. A királyság visszaállítása után megszilárdította az államhatalmat, 1920. március 1-jétől 1944. október 16-ig ő volt a Magyar Királyság kormányzója, de a király visszatérését megakadályozta. Külpolitikájában meghatározó volt az ország területi revíziója. A második világháború alatt eleinte próbált katonailag semleges maradni, de a második bécsi döntés után, 1941-től már elköteleződött a tengelyhatalmak mellett. 1944 tavasza, az ország német megszállása után is hatalmon maradt, az ősz folyamán még megpróbált kiugorni a háborúból, azonban a nyilasok átvették a hatalmat és lemondatták. A németek fogvatartották feleségével együtt Bajorországban, ahol a háború után is maradt. A politikától visszavonult, családjával 1949-ben Portugáliába emigrált és ott is halt meg, 1957-ben. 1993. szeptember 4-én temették újra Kenderesen. Megítélése napjainkban is komoly vita tárgya.

One of my dad's uncles fought against the Nazis in Hungary, and told me that there were Hungarian women who would defiantly sing this song, as he and the other soldiers would march through the country.
