Thank you for such an informative video! Not sure if you’ll see this but be careful about sharpening your knife over food.. it can let off tiny metal shards which are now in your food. You should also rinse and wipe off your knife blade after sharpening to get rid of all the particles.
Roll your baggies over (like the cuff of your sleeve) at the top, helps to keep your baggie open and less mess at the seal. Love your videos!
Thank you! I was very surprised that she didn't. Also, Chelsea, it would have been sooo easy to cut the bacon in half while wrapped, then just pick up the sealed ends and dump it in the cure. Much tidier and nothing on the hands! What fun!
Totally do this!!
Put your ziplock baggie into a juice container with the top over the edges to hold your baggie open while you fill it.
This was so interesting. Living in Australia we have no idea about these cold temps … indeed over the last couple of days we’ve had 100% humidity …. horrible, hard to breathe heat. I’ve been giving my chickens (my chooks, as we say) frozen watermelon and ice water ! What a diverse world we live in ! ❤
I was complaining to my brother this morning on the phone how cold it was at night. His reply his question was how cold was it? I said it was 41F. I did not get any sympathy from him since he’s in Minnesota. But my cold comes from the damp of the Pacific Ocean, which is close by and living in a house built in 1906. The damp comes through the walls.
Writing from South Africa. Luckily we stay on the West Coast in Vredenburg and we always have a breeze.
Thank you for another wonderful video! Two things that help me in the kitchen one I turn the upper lip of the Ziploc bag inside out, it helps it stand up on its own, and that way you don’t get the zipper part dirty you’re putting things into the bag. Also, it’s best not to sharpen a knife over food because the micro shards of metal can get into the food.
And to wipe the knife off before using it to remove any remaining shards of metal.
Great advice!!!!!😀
Great video Chelsea
The kitchen is amazingly bright today😊
You guys stay safe in this horrible cold snap that’s coming your way.. thanks for this amazing video ❤❤❤
Love the green cabinets!!!!
First noticed that sign above your fridge 😂😂😂😂
I love the sign above your fridge!😂. I need one for my house too.
Wow, you sure are a good speaker! Love your voice and educational content
-37 C tonight, -47C (-52 Fahrenheit) both Friday and Saturday night, and -38 Celsius Sunday night and the day temperatures are not that much better. And -10 Celsius by Tuesday. That's Alberta. I bundled up and went to the dentist today and it was actually busy at Costco. I'm hibernating the rest of the weekend. I knew we all had it way too nice and warm all fall and over Christmas. Hopefully this will be the only Deep Freeze for the rest of the winter. But we still need to get through February.
Great video. Be safe!
oh, thats so funny, I have never noticed that sign before. I need a similar sign 😂
Please stay safe in this weather
Your videos are AWESOME 👌 👏
I remember growing up having a net born calf in our home by the wood stove until it dried and warmed up. Then they had a heat lamp on them in a big wood box in the barn until the cold snap was over. Enjoyed your video.
Your animals are taking very good care through this type of weather❤
Enjoyed the video.
I have always want to try curing bacon and ham
Love your videos
*FUN**FACT:*
The temperature -40°c is the same in Fahrenheit; -40°f!! I don’t think they are the same at any other temp. Every year here in Minnesota we hit those low/mid double negative temperatures a few times. In those temps life goes on as usual except one’s lungs burn when inhaling. I hope everyone is staying dry & warm❣️Cheers, Doc
Yay, Minnesota! 😊
I’m in Minnesota too,up in Hibbing. I have stew cooking in the crock pot for supper. During these cold days I like to give my chickens more protein and have it warm to help keep them laying during the winter. Today they enjoyed oatmeal after my husband and I ate it for breakfast. The chickens were happily eating that warm healthy oatmeal.
Minnesota great white north border town with Wisconsin! Chilly by the river...bundle up!!
@@jenniferr2057 Are you a hardy Minnesotan?😄
Love your videos. Love how you explain everything. Stay warm and safe. My family adores you.
Say hi to them from me!
You will love the tomato clips! I have used them for years.
You do everything possible to protect your livestock from the weather. Know you are getting excited to get your hands dirty. Thank you for sharing. Stay safe and warm.
I am Ontarian but lived in Alberta for 8 years. Alberta can be cold!! -43 degrees is a whole different way of coping with cold! Stay warm and stay happy 😊
i lived in northern Minnesota for a few years, and this cold was common. Mukluks, sheepskin coats, heater block on the car….dogs had little booties on so their feet did not freeze. stay safe and stay warm
We had a female husky that LOVED the cold. It would be snowing or so cold you couldn't stand even being out in it, BUT she loved it!! We had to make her come inside!! Sure miss her!
❤❤❤❤❤
Loved the video
A “fancy dancy” sprayer nozzle to help avert hanging plant murder😂👍👏 Thank (so much) you for a hearty laugh in a (very) cold week.
One difference between the UK and Canada/US is that you "hot smoke" and actually cook your bacon when you smoke it. Our store bought bacon is "cold smoked" and the bacon is still raw, but with a smoky flavour.
It's probably because we don't have the history of home curing that you have. "Hot smoked" is safer and easier to store without refrigeration.
I love your friendly , productive and informative videos! God bless!
We got 14" of snow last night in WI.
💖💖💖
Chelsea - thanks for the really informative tour and explanation of how the animals are kept safe in the elements. Stay warm!😍🇨🇦
Great amount of bacon. I am monitoring various outside storage areas this winter to determine what might be the best non-refrigeration based curing.
Stay safe and warm in the cold snap❤️
Our Canadian weather has been really bizarre this year for sure. That pork belly is going to be so yum. So love the animal tour days. They all look snuggled in :)
Stay safe and warm ! Blessings!
Love seeing all the animals
It’s coming here to in Idaho… however not negative 43! I just loaded up my chickens with fresh pine shavings and special food including lots of fatty seeds! ❤
I love the sign above the refrigerator. No dead hanging baskets this summer. Thank you for bringing bother dogs in even though they hate it.
Be blessed Little Mountain family in this extreme cold. Ciao.
That was interesting about bacon. Your animals are so well loved and care for I wish everyone was like u I find your videos so educational
💚Well, today is Saturday , so you are likely in the coldest weather as you mentioned, and definitely a shock as it hasn't been very cold or much snow thus far..hope everyone, inside and out, is faring well! Love seeing the bacon curing..I also would recommend not steeling your knives over food and wiping them afterwards to remove tiny metal pieces. Thanks Chelsea! 💚
This cold weather is coming our way over the weekend - I am in South Dakota. Windshield advisory was just posted with up to -45 as temps. We just got our first real snow fall of the year earlier this week…it has been such a beautiful winter but we knew it was coming at some point!!! Stay safe!!!
Similar here in Nebraska
Is that -45 c ?
@@justmenicole4842f and c virtually the same at 40-45 below....
Praying you are all staying safe, healthy and warm. I am hoping all the animals are doing okay as well.
I used tomato
Clips last season. They work great! A pain to remove in the fall but they work good.
Please don’t hold that knife and steel over your food!
Great Pyrenees are my favorite breed. I just love them. It’s too hot in July & August here in Michigan for them. Even my Labs, prefer to be outside.
Your kitchen looks amazing!!! ❤
Take care of your animals and yourself and family . I'll say a little prayer for all.
Years ago I managed a greenhouse and we had a greenhouse full of cobra hydroponic tomatoes and English cucumbers,we had thousands of those tomatoe clips, they worked amazing. Our tomatoes grew about 14 ft tall
We have same temps. Our steer cried and cried in the shed with straw for first day and night. Such a shock for them.
Here in northeastern Maine, it has been unheard-of warm. The coldest so far is Friday night’s forecast of 2 above (Fahrenheit). We’ve usually had -20 by this time.
I love the sign above your icebox.
I love your son above your refrigerator. That’s funny.
Great video, as usual; thanks for sharing! Those animals are well cared for. We’re experiencing the cold here in Alberta & it’s a shock after the nice weather that we’ve had. Blessings to everyone & stay warm & healthy🤗💗🇨🇦
Hi....i found a pully hook for plants at my local dollar store, you push it up and it lowers your plant to water then raise it up to desired height..
Its the best item ever!!! ❤
-43, are you kidding me? This is extremly cold, ever in Canada! 🥶🥶🥶
-43!! Wow! You had been saying this winter had been warmer than normal. Sounds like it’s catching up.
Amazon has ziplock baggie holders. They will hold it up for you
We are supposed to get down to -26F/-35C on Friday night. This is my first bout of real winter cold since moving from a warmer climate. I'm trying to learn what layers I have keep me and my kids warm enough. Hopefully next year we can invest in some better winter clothes.
I love the tomato clips. So easy to use. No cutting or tying. Just clip and go. You will love them.
Wow never a dull moment. Stay safe
Stay warm and all safe on your farm . Was -36 here at 5 am. Thankful I don’t have to go to work today .
Currently snowing in Lower Mainland. The afternoon traffic may be interesting 😊 Love your garden haul. Thanks for demonstrating preserving bacon.
Add in the dropping temp and wind chill and the commute is already a problem, e.g. SFU. Glad I am retired.
I live in the subtropics Queensland Australia, you are amazing, I could not cope with that cold. What an amazing job you do.
Oh my gosh, that's cold! We're getting down to - 8 F, which is - 22 c, over the next several days (NE Washington state), and have also had a fairly mild winter - so I just went out to protect some roses and pots. But I don't have any outdoor animals. I hope you all do well, and stay safe & warm!
Thank you for keeping it real. For plant markers, I use old canning lids. Spray paint them black, use a white marker to label. We have had a very mild winter, here in Ontario. I know your cold temps are coming! Keep warm.
What a great idea! Thank you for sharing...Lord knows I have a ton of old canning lids. I really love this idea.
Frigid cold is hitting us now in central Illinois, USA. Single digits, below zero wind chills, strong winds and wind gusts. Not as extreme as your temperature but for us, yes. So far our winter has been mild so we are spoiled now. Blessings.
When you replied "hey" to the duck😂
Great video! You take such good care of your animals and are so knowledgeable on how to do that in such extreme weather.
It’s been trying to snow here (Toronto area) for days but keeps raining as not quite cold enough. Temps are going waaaay down starting tomorrow. Hope we get snow for the kids!😍🇨🇦
-43...OMG. it has been -4 in England and we have gone into hibernation...lol
The cold is coming to SW Arkansas. Monday is supposed to be 7°. We get that cold about 3-4 years, so it is very hard on our Farmers. Love watching the snow at your farm, but don't like it live. Have a wonderful and blessed week.
For mold on soil with seed domes add a tiny sprinkle of vermiculite on top of your flats of soil
Game changer for me
Thank you!!
I have heard if you throw some pure copper in water for animals it keeps it clean and sanitary :)
I grew up in a tiny unincorporated mill town with approximately 500 people at its peak. There were 7 kids in my sixth grade class, and they bussed us across a mountain pass from 7th grade through 12th grade. There were 38 kids in my graduating class of 1973, one of the bigger classes. When I was in 2nd or 3rd grade, we had ONE school closure day because it got down to -40 degrees at night and the steam heat at school froze. We drove our parents crazy that day off! As I was raising my three adult children in John Day, Oregon, there were were very few snow days, we had horses, but our kids’ 4-H hogs didn’t come until spring. I cooked lots of venison, elk, and homegrown pork, as well as lots of of home canned and frozen produce, so I get this. There was no fast food within 40 miles. I live in Central Oregon now and am a retired elementary school teacher. I’m spoiled now but am busy returning to my roots of being self sufficient. I’m busy exploring ways to have plants in a small space.
I just learned to wipe the blade off after sharpening before using to wipe any metal dust. I never thought of that before.
While I was editing I was like, oh no, I’m going to catch heck for doing that over my food and not cleaning the blade! Lol Sometimes when I get into filming I miss things. Darn it!

Great video!! Stay warm!
Thanks so much for this video!! Have been waiting for it since you mentioned you were going to post it!!
Gotta say..hearing you talk about those kind of actual temperatures gave me chills! Sendin up prayers for everyone dealing with it..that ya`ll stay safe and your animals also. I just can`t imagine it. I`d be a basket case for sure! LOL
Stay warm!
So hard for the animals when temps change so quickly. It's amazing how their body heat can warm up a small space and keep each other somewhat warm.
We had Holsteins when I was younger that stayed in the barn in the really cold days. Scottish Highlands later seemed to like the cold much better!
Hope your cold stretch is short, as ours in Wisconsin is thought to be.
Looks like it will be above freezing next week. Thank goodness.
I LOVE THOSE CLIPS! I garden in Arizona in the extreme heat and they do great!
For a mixed benefit, you can turn down the zipper of the bag, inside out. It will wear on the edges of the zipper so you don't get as many reuses, but it will hold open the bag as a second set of hands. Depending on how far down you fold it, it can also help the bag stay upright, acting as a reinforced wall.
I totally enjoyed your video today.❤ I love seeing all your beautiful animals and how well they are loved.❤ Always look forward to your videos.❤ I live in Southern Missouri and we are fixing to be hit with -25° F this weekend so preparedness for our animals is key. If I could have it my way, they'd all be inside the house with me.😁😂 Take care and be safe. Much love from me to you and yours. ❤
You are lucky to be able to feed your pigs and chickens kitchen scraps in the UK we are not allowed . If the fruit and veg has been in the kitchen it can not go to the animals.Because of foot and mouth. Have your feed bills gone up in price I have sheep cows pigs on and off chickens ,geese, and ducks and not forgetting a hive of bees. I go to the feed shop twice a week and its round about £150 per week. Hay is now £6.25 per small hay. Keep up the good work love the videos.
Thank you!
Funny with the no groceries for January and February, we've been doing this hankering for winters for last few years as we live remotely and it just made sense for us. I make pretty much all our food from scratch specially all the condiments. Plus this year we don't even have a vehicle, this save tons lol
You have inspired me now to make some bacon. I have a couple pork bellies in my freezer. Also, you will love those tomato clips. I use the same ones, and I love them. Cannot wait to get our seeds planted; we're getting the garden itch. LOL. Here's to Garden 2024!
Oh and congrats on the new website. I shall be exploring!
And I have been dreading the coming cold snap; cannot even imagine -49C!! Our high Sunday is supposed to be -2F! I don't know if I have enough indoor clothes to get enough layers for that weather!! We live in a trailer, and are praying we dont freeze this year❤
Hope you are well-insulated over there.
I just received my cookbook, I'm looking forward to making all the recipes
Chelsea, you are going to LV the plant clips!!!
Love all your cooking. They are a great difference from my cooking in the south. I have tried several of your recipes and love them.
I grew up in rural Illinois an hour drive from Chicago and it could get very cold for months. Having now lived in Dallas TX for 45 years it is the heat not the cold one has to worry about as long as one has dry shelter for humans, pets and wildlife. This afternoon, Jan 11 is up to 68*F but Sun Jan 14 it will get down to 18*F with rain, and high winds and maybe a light dusting of snow flurries. We seem to have mild winters but no road equipment to handle extended ice and flash flooding.
My dad is a butcher and he is so fast with his steel too! I am not too bad with it lol. This bacon looks delish already. I loved the tour and learning about keeping the animals safe.
Yeehaw, -40 is chilly! I love seeing how you do animal husbandry up there in the frozen moonscape :) That calf looks like a fawn, what a little beauty. Can't wait to see how the bacon turns out. Stay warm!!!
@Little Mountain Ranch
For your plastic sprout covers, instead of cutting the plastic for venting; use a soldering iron to burn holes and this will prevent splitting or breaking.
I hope you have better success with the tomato clips than I did. The ones I bought were horrible, and many of them broke before I wax even able to get them hooked onto the trellis.
My first ones were like that too. I bought a different brand and those seem to hold up much better. Look for UV protected ones.
Hi from Qc, not cold here yet, just wanted to say you will love those little clips! Used them for the first time last summer !
